    • Great device, cool money saving features
Nest is easy to install and works nicely, including turning itself down when you're not there if you set that up (by detecting if your phones are all in the house). However, 2-wire thermostats can only be replaced if you also get a Nest Power Connector, which you can install yourself if you're somewhat handy, because otherwise the batteries run down. There are youtube videos about not needing a 3rd wire, but they have changed the Nest to not work that way any more. This is for the old Nest, newer ones may not need the power connector, I can't say. ... show more

I had a gen 2 near I bought for $200 , apparently Google has stopped supporting this products app so I could no longer control it via phone . I bought this one for $75 Not sure of the differences yet, but it’s easy to install, app it uses is Google home not Nest app. I works just fine , you can set home / away temps . I think the main difference is that it’s not learnable, which is fine by me even when I was home . The gen 2 would turn off my heat if it didn’t sense anyone was home . Assume there is a motion sensor in it ? It’s well worth the money a+ so far ... show more

    • A really big improvement over our old thermostat
Was a little tricky to install in my situation. The input wires were stapled to a stud and too long to work in the Nest. I didn't want to cut the wires, since replacing them if it didn't work wasn't a consideration (fallback scenario). I wound up digging out a bit more drywall so I could coil the excess wire in there before passing it back up through to the nest. The renewed unit I got had a badly faded instruction sheet. Luckily, I was able to go to the Nest website and get clear instructions. Once installed, I had a tech come out and verify I the installation. With temps reaching 114˚F, I didn't want to chance the AC not working because I didn't insatall it correctly. It took a bit to get it to connect to the app - since the app can handle so many other kinds of devices, it was a little confusing getting to the Nest part and then going through all the screens to get it connected to the wifi, etc. Once that all done, I tackled the programming. Again, a little non-intuitive, but I waded through it and got it set up the way I want. Worth it? Absolutely! I love being able to control it with my phone. The programming is a boon - with the old one I would too often forget to adjust it in the evening and the hvac would crank away all night at daytime setting. With this that doesn't happen: it never forgets. I can fine tune the stages of heating/cooling for throughout the day and night and then just leave it alone. I really like being able to see the current and target temp on both on the phone and as I walk by the unit. A bonus is it can show the inside humidity and the outside temperature (the latter through a connection to a weather service - not direct measurement.) ... show more

It works to cool but not to heat, also it’s by far the least “smart” device. Make sure to find something that works for you on everything.

Seller 4 stars - nest thermostat 2 stars The hardware is an inferior product to 3rd gen in every way. Cheaper, less solid feeling. Doesn’t feel as secure to the wall. And the physical interface is clunkier and less intuitive. I do like the new schedule software, it’s faster and simpler to program than previous model. The seller sent me a device in “excellent” condition with included batteries that needed to be replaced and there was no new protection film to protect screen. Product was fine and as advertised. I bought this to replace my 3rd gen to get wifi function back that nest intentionally made obsolete. I bought this used because google will never get my money again. ... show more

After reinstalling and carefully setting up the thermostat in the app, it works perfectly. I love that during the sorting and fall I can set it to run both heat AND a/c to get the optimal temperature in my home!
