  • So affordable. So good. With mods it can become even better.
Size: Gateron Optical Red Color: Black
An excellent 'mechanical' keyboard with optical switches that is around $60.00 dollars. That sentence feels crazy to say, but it's the gosh darn truth. This review is mainly for the Gateron Red Optical switch version of this keyboard. Pros 1. Hot-swappable. If a switch dies just pull it out and replace it (not likely to happen considering no metal leaf), or get some different Gateron Optical switches like blacks or yellows to change the entire feel of the keyboard. Example, these red switches are incredibly easy to press. I really like how smooth the linear switch is, so I'd probably want to get some Gateron Optical Black switches. 2. Programmable. A really underappreciated plus is definitely going to be the software of this keyboard. It's not in English, but it definitely still gets the job done. There are also Macro's which I have started to use more often. Example, I was able to change around my Home and End keys so that they are more comfortably near the Function key. 3. That FAST response time. There is a noticeable difference between pressing a Cherry MX Blue switch down and having the character move and pressing this linear optical switch down and having the character move. I think there are two reasons for this. a. The reason that actually matters, the switch actuation point is higher at 1.5 mm versus a Cherry MX Blue being at 2.00 mm. b. The optical nature of the switch is said to have a response time of 0.2 mm. I don't know if this actually matters in the long run, but it's good to know that it may be faster. Cons 1. The key caps are okay, but I do think these switches need O-rings to be perfect. I think the sound of the key caps is my biggest issue with them; they just sound cheap and the O-rings keep them from hitting the bottom plate. My second issue is that they don't have a lot of texture to them so they're kind of like in-between being smooth and textured which is just not a good feeling at all. 2. Certain keys are not programmable. For some reason all of the keys that change lighting effects and swab profiles can't be disabled. I think this would be my only real problem with the keyboard on the software level. 3. THIS IS A PET PEEVE. I like the RGB, the screws guys, but come on. They're not black nor are they white, just plain silver. I can't not see them. They stare at me between the key caps. Neutral 1. There's a microphone in the keyboard for the Music back-lighting mode. I plan to mod this keyboard more, so I'll probably end up desoldering the microphone anyways. I wish it was more software and went by the audio playing on the computer since that would be sick. Current modifications: PBT key caps and O-rings. Queued modifications: Better stabilizers, desolder microphone, I plan to replace the O-rings with some type of foam insert that will dampen noise more and result in less fatigue, and I want to refine my function key layout and figure out some macros. ... show more

  • Affordable
Size: Gateron Optical Blue Color: Prism Pink
The media could not be loaded. I wanted a mechanical keyboard that had the satisfying clicking noise. Didn’t take up too much space. Was backlit, and was easy to maneuver. After using this keyboard for a while now, I got to say- for the price, it goes above and beyond. For casually gaming it works perfectly. There’s no delay in command when i press down. And it has a nice variety of rgb light settings. Would recommend for aesthetics, sound, sturdy feel, and very good command input upon pressing on the keys. ... show more

  • Pretty damn good quality for the money, and I don't say that lightly; hot-swappable, **BUT**...
Size: Gateron Optical Black Color: Black
I had never bought a ~60% keyboard before since I work in a pharmacy and the software we use makes heavy use of the nav keys and number pad, so usually I wouldn't have even considered such a board. In fact I came across this board as I was buying the parts to build a 96 key keyboard because I do game a fair bit so I wanted something smaller to give me more desk space while still have the Numpad and arrow keys so I can lug it to work and be as efficient and quick as I am with a full size or enter alt-codes or do taxes at home. This board caught my eyes for two reasons: Hot-swappable and Optical switches. The very small form factor is kind of a turn off for me because I can only comfortably use it for gaming, but I figures the hot-swappableness would make it a good test board the packs of switches I'd just bought (more on that later). The packaging was not impressive, not that I care, I just thought I'd mention it. I was very surprised by the build and even the fit and finish at this price point, however. The keycaps are the cheap double shots with the stenciled lettering so I'm not a fan of the look, but it's not too gamer-y and they can easily be replaced if it really starts to bother me. It's a plastic case, but the keys are mounted in a metal plate, and it's a minuscule form-factor, so it feels very sturdy; it doesn't flex /at all/ and is heavier than I thought it'd be. That's impressive to me for this price, but what prompted me to write this review was the fact that it sounds /incredible/ because all the stabilizers are lubed /out of the box/ and they don't budge /at all/. That astonished me as I have bought several mechanical keyboards at various price points: An MK Typist with box whites, a Logitech G Pro with GX Blues, A James Donkey 007 with Gat Browns (smoothest cherry brown clones on the market), a Logi G613, a logi 610 Orion with cherry reds, and a few cheap mechs on top of that. None of them came with lubed anything straight out of the box and the result, combined with the Optical Gateron Blacks I opted for making this one of the smoothest, best-sounding and most satisfying keyboards I have ever typed on and I'm usually a tactile-switch guy. Really nice bang for the buck if you're into smaller keebs like this. --Side note: I get the impression the switches are less complex and therefore, cheaper, which allows more attention to be paid to fit and finish. HOWEVER. The Board /is/ hot-swappable, but /only/ with other optical switches, which means no traditional mechanical keyswitches, whether they're cherry, gateron, khail, or a boutique switch can be used at all. Period. The switches are basically just little plastic boxes with a spring that when pressed, block an infrared(?) laser to signal actuation, which is why I think the switches are very cheap to manufacture, and it's also why they are so unbelievably smooth, even compared to a lubed cherry red. -- The software was confusing and not that great but I personally didn't feel the need to use it since I don't care all that much about RGB or macros so it didn't bother me too much, though your mileage may vary in that regard. In conclusion, if you are a fan of the form factor and want to try optical switches, buy it. The build is solid and (assuming all boards have pre-lubed stabs like mine did) it's lubed! For $50! I personally can't use it for more than just gaming or typing up this review, so it's not optimal for me, but if you just need a small board with enough keys for gaming or chatting on discord this will be plenty for you. ... show more

  • Maybe the BEST value in a keyboard for such a low price.
Size: Gateron Optical Silver Color: Black
The media could not be loaded. I got the Gateron Speed Silver optical switches version. The keys are super fast, even faster than my Drop Alt Kailhu silver switches which cost literally double the price on sale. Its hot swappable so you can lube the switches and add new stabilizers if you want to. I used the stock stabs. If you foam mod and lube this bad boy it will probably be the best keyboard you ever used. Perfect for gaming but takes getting used to for typing because the keys are so so sensitive. The software is non existent. But you really don't need it. Even works if you plug it into an android phone. ... show more
