I got the Genmitsu laser engraver as a small companion to my CNC, and it’s been great for hobby projects. It assembles in under an hour, is extremely lightweight, and the work area is perfect for coasters, tags, small signs, and other detailed engravings. For a compact machine, the precision is impressive, the repeatability shows in the fine line work. The laser isn’t powerful enough for cutting thick materials, so this is truly an engraver, not a cutter. But it performs very well on wood, leather, cardboard, and similar materials. It seems durable so far. For someone who is self-thought, the Gemnistu products are accessible without breaking the bank. Overall, it’s a great little laser for hobbyists or educators who want something portable and accurate. Just be aware it’s not big or robust enough for commercial or heavy use, but for small creative projects, it’s an excellent value.

I have been wanting to get a laser for awhile, but before jumping in to a multi-thousand dollar unit I decided to grab this. It's a low power option, but great for learning the software and how lasers work. It comes nearly fully assembled so very easy to get going. This simple open-frame unit does not have a bottom so you will need some sort of metal sheet or something to place underneath it to protect the work surface. I ended up getting the official honeycomb bed which was perfect for this. This laser is cheap, but fully functional and produces pretty good quality. I also picked up the official air assist pump and air purifier along with a generic laser enclosure to fully enclosed machine that could be used anywhere. There is also an addon IR laser module that I am considering getting next. The only thing I wish they had were separate upgradable laser modules so I could upgrade to the 5W or 10W version just by replacing the module rather than buying a completely new laser.

I got this Kortek 2.5W laser engraver because I wanted something small and beginner friendly to try out engraving projects, and this has been a really nice entry point. It is a low powered unit which means it feels safer to learn on, and while it will not cut deeply, it does lightly engrave wood quite well. I tested it on the included sample pieces and the results were crisp enough to make out fine lines. I also tried engraving on paper and leaves just for fun, and it handled those smoothly without burning through. The size makes it easy to set up on a table and it does not take up much space, which is perfect for a home hobby machine. What makes this engraver especially approachable is that it does not have to stay tethered to a computer. I connected it through the phone app which worked surprisingly well and meant the entire setup process could be done from the phone. Connecting to WiFi and starting a design was straightforward, and the app includes some basic options and templates to get started. For someone just beginning, that makes it a lot less intimidating because you can pick a design and start engraving right away without diving into advanced software. I liked that I could save a few of my simple drawings and quickly send them to the machine. In terms of using it at home, I made sure to place a folded sheet of foil under the engraver to protect my tabletop, and that gave me peace of mind in case of any stray heat or marks. While this is clearly not a professional grade laser, it is a very accessible way to practice and experiment with different materials. I appreciate that it is portable, the footprint is small, and the precision feels accurate enough at ±0.01mm for basic hobby projects. After using it for a while, I feel it gives a clear picture of what working with lasers is like without being overwhelming, and for me it has been a solid and enjoyable starter machine.

See picture for test of cutting and engraving on 1/8 plywood. I was actually surprised the little 2.5W bugger cut through! Took it 4 passes at 90 or 100%, but it chewed all the way! Engraving test was acceptable - it will do reasonable engraving. While the 2.5W version works surprisingly well, I'd buy as much power as you feel you can afford, this thing doesn't engrave or cut fast with such a limited power output. We actually do most of our work on a 24x36" 85W CO2 laser - this little chicken hawk is really not anywhere in the same league, but it's also a small fraction of the cost and size and is in our nice, not a drive away. It's small enough I can throw it in a drawer when I'm not using it, a plus. Fine for small engraving jobs or cuts in a pinch. No enclosure, no evacuation fan - use it outside sitting on your bbq grill or you'll regret it! I ran it hooked up to free software LaserGRBL and it worked just fine. It also has offline and wireless modes which seem to work ok, but you'll probably like it better running off a laptop if you can.
