  • Not bad for a good starter tripod
For starters, I normally don't use a tripod for the type of photography I do. I do mostly portraits on the move. I like moving around a lot. However, there are times when a tripod becomes absolutely essential for things like self portraits or things that don't move much like landscapes. Let's get the obvious stuff out the way; Focusing on the stuff we do know, it does set up pretty easy. First off, it comes in a nice bag with a strap. Some bags only open at the top. This one opens nearly all the way down making it quite easy to access the tripod. I love flip locks versus the screw locks and this one pulls them off nicely opening up four sections of tripod goodness to nearly six and a half feet at it's tallest with the middle column fully extended, which is pretty good to get that height. There's also the three different positions one can set their legs if a different angle is needed for various situations. The only reason I normally need to use this is to drop low to the ground. And, by the way, the middle column does not come out to flip upside down if you're wondering. I don't consider that a negative. That is just one of those things. However, the front leg does come off to form a monopod and that's pretty nifty. While the tripod is lightweight, once the angle is changed I feel it increases the wobble of the legs a bit, which is the trade off. So it's understandable. So while I feel it's fairly sturdy in normal conditions, one might want to use some weight utilizing the nifty hook in the middle underneath. While it is advertised as portable, I don't consider it portable if I have to travel by plane. This will not fit in most carry-ons unless you opt to get the one the second largest bag you could fly with. While not carry-on friendly, it is still quite light and portable carrying it around and transporting to various shoots. As i don't like to carry a lot of stuff to weigh me down this tripod does well in that category. The fluid ball head seems a bit misleading or perhaps it is a bit limiting for me. It pans nicely and tilts only up and down. So if one wanted to shoot portrait mode, you'd have to adjust it on the plate itself, which you'd have to bypass using the knob that goes hand and hand with the screw that goes into the bottom of the camera. That's one of only things about the head I don' t like. It would seem better suited for a camcorder in this case. Other than that, the tilt locks are nice to have. Though everything is plasticiy from the head itself to the knobs, which brings build in question; like I said, in normal situations it seems to do great, but be cautious when putting thousands of dollars of equipment on this thing. That's really the most important thing to be aware of besides making sure you get the shot. While advertised for 20 pounds, I personally don't have that much weight to put on it nor would I test it. Otherwise, it seems to do well with just my camera body and short zoom lens at most. Overall, I think it's a great starter tripod for anyone starting out. Please don't buy the $20 tripod from Walmart if you can help it, but hey, if that's all you can afford, we all gotta start somewhere. All I'm saying is save up a bit ore and get something better. This is a pretty good deal for what you're paying. Though one could always pay just a bit more for better build quality in a few of its aspects. Otherwise, it does what I need it to do minus that one thing I mentioned. ... show more

  • Very impressive. Top quality for the price.
Review from filmmaker/travel videographer: Overall build quality is very impressive. This is easily the tallest capable tripod I’ve ever worked with. Can go far higher than my head which is a really helpful feature for many situations. The locking legs, while plastic, are very secure and very easy to latch and unlatch. Several tripods can be hard on the hands to do so. The legs also allow for a second “wider-spread” position using the very solid metal adjusting buttons - this can help you shoot lower to the ground as well as add more stability. The center column has two twist locks that allow you to extend it higher. On any tripod you can’t expect too much stability from a center pole but I’m impressed on how well it handles. To shoot at eye level you do need to extend the center column a bit, the legs alone put the camera close to my chin. This is definitely geared for the travel crowd. The way that the legs invert and the tripod folds down to a smaller position is very handy for travel and attaching to a backpack. The monopod feature is a surprising addition. Connecting the head to the center column allows for some very tall shots. Would be good for weddings or event video, or any situation where you may need to get higher than the crowds. The head is mostly plastic. The tripod plate is nice and large - helpful for accommodating larger cameras. I tested it out with my Canon 7D mkii and 28-300 mm massive lens (pictured here), under 10 lbs and a lot of length. It handled the whole package very well, I am impressed. You can’t compare it to the high end fluid heads that are 2-5x the price, but for this price range it’s right up there in terms of build quality. When it comes to shooting, it does take some getting used to to find the right maneuvering to ease in and out of your pan and tilt shots. Just grabbing the panhandle and turning you may find it jarring. But stick with it, get your body close to the camera and find the right amount of pan/tilt lock-twisting to get smooth moving shots. Also google the “rubber band method” for panning shots. Includes high quality carrying bag Overall, it is a good travel video tripod. Folds down to a pretty short length and has the option to get taller than any other tripod I’ve seen on the market. Very well built for this price range. When it comes to getting a smooth pan and tilt it is certainly capable, but does take some practice to find the right way to do it. Also keep in mind this is for video/horizontal photos only, the head doesn’t swivel to portrait mode (the brand sells other tripods if you’re looking for a photography option). ... show more

  • Like it so far
Hopefully the plastic components will hold up. Dislike: Have to lower the leg to level the camera. Appears so far to be very useful and durable enough for my use. I like it. Good for its price range.
