  • Nice quality set, very smooth and a pleasure to use. Tighten the hex. A set for the price of one Snap-On wrench Nice quality set, very smooth and a pleasure to use. Tighten the hex. A set for the price of one Snap-On wrench
Size: 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" Drive Style: 4 Pc Flex Head Full Polish
This is a really nice set for the price. The flex heads come in handy more often than I even expected. I use these most of the time even when I wouldn't need a flex head. Tighten the hex to make it stiffer. (more on this later) The 120XP means that you only need 3 degrees of movement to catch a tooth and tighten or loosen a fastener. I recently used the 1/4" to remove a blower motor that was in a tight spot. The 1/2" is quite large with a long handle. The 3/8" has a normal head but has a long handle. The 1/4" is nice and small but has a long handle. The 3/8" stubby is pretty nice but honestly, I haven't used it yet. The way GearWrench is able to have 120 positions is with 60 tooth gears and 2 pawls that alternate. Every 1/2 tooth rotation it switches between the pawl on the right and the pawl on the left. There are videos that explain this better from GearWrench. If they had used a 120 tooth gear it would likely be too fragile to hold up to much abuse. As an added bonus, the switch has On and Off stamped in the wrench much like the Snap-On Wrenches do. The head also has 3 degrees stamped in it in case you forget how much travel is needed to catch a tooth. I bought the 3/8" normal length non-flex head FR80 (80 tooth) Snap-On wrench for about $100. I paid a similar amount for this set. I put the Snap-On and the GearWrench set side by side in the picture. (you get a lot more with GearWrench) There are people on YouTube who test the strength of different wrenches and although Snap-On is normally very good, there isn't much difference and at times GearWrench will last a few foot pounds more before they break. (these guys break wrenches on purpose, it is painful to watch at times) Also, if the flex head ever starts to get loose, you can tighten it with a hex wrench. My 1/4" was a little bit loose for my taste. The hex sizes needed are: 4mm for the 1/2", 3mm for both 3/8" wrenches and 2.5mm for the 1/4". A mechanic friend told me to tighten mine right away. ... show more

  • Tool truck quality.
Size: 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" Drive Style: 4 Pc Flex Head Full Polish
These are great ratchets. I’ve been using 120xp ratchets for 7 years now in a professional automotive setting in the rust belt. They hold up to abuse well! To get the best performance out of these ratchets, I’ve found it best to lubricate them a couple times a year. I use ATF in the 1/4” drives, and permatex purple brake lube in the 3/8” and 1/2” drives. From the factory the 120xp’s barely have any grease in them. Once you lubricate them, they become so buttery and smooth. I have a couple snap on FL80s but never reach for them because I’ve found the gearwrench (once lubricated) to be much smoother and just as robust. Like any tool, with extended use they will wear out. Proper maintenance (clean + lube) helps, but it’s always a good idea to invest in a couple rebuild kits to have on hand. Rebuild kits are cheap ($15 per) and include every component of the guts. Sure you can send the tool out for warranty, but nobody wants to wait 2-3 weeks for a replacement. These ratchets are the best deal out there! ... show more

  • Tool Truck Quality Ratchets at Price Like Somebody Stole Them from a Tool Truck
Size: 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" Drive Style: 4 Pc Flex Head Full Polish
I own a set of Snap-on Dual 80s and a Matco 88 locking flex head, and while I believe both those brands are excellent and beautifully made fine tooth ratchets, they are fairly expensive. Matco and GearWrench were previously sister companies, and it shows... my 3/8 Matco 88 locking flex head is very similar in appearance to the GearWrench 3/8 flex head. Both have a low profile high tooth ratchet head with recessed reverse lever (the Matco uses an 88 tooth mechanism while the GearWrench 120 XP uses a dual pawl 60 tooth mechanism which acts like a 120 tooth mech). That said, this entire GearWrench 4 piece set sells for less than the MSRP on that one Matco ratchet I own. Please keep in mind that, with the exception of the 3/8 stubby ratchet, the other 3 ratchets all use longer handles. The 1/4 ratchet isn't long enough to prevent you access to most places (esp when you consider the flex head adaptability), and the 3/8 does come with a stubby version for tight access locations while the 3/8 long handle ratchet offers a significant amount of leverage. As for the 1/2 inch ratchet, the handle looks like the handle on a breaker bar.... you get a ton of leverage, but it's B.I.G. It's a beautifully well made piece, though, and has a very nice light back drag. All of the above said, the fact that you also get an Apex Tool Group backed lifetime GearWrench warranty, I can't recommend these ratchets enough - even compared to the MAC, Matco, Snap-on and other tool truck brand ratchets. Again, not to knock Matco or Snap-on, both those brands manufacture excellent quality ratchets, and those brands are also made in the USA, while these GearWrench ratchets are made in Taiwan --- but, when you consider price as a factor, these GearWrench ratchets are extremely hard to beat. Just remember that you may want to have a few standard size 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 ratchets for when you are accessing bolts where you may prefer a smaller handle over a longer handle ratchet due to limited access. ... show more

  • Amazing set of wrenches.
Size: 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" Drive Style: 4 Pc Flex Head Full Polish
Strengths: Construction, finish, feel, heft, laser+stamp engraved Weaknesses: None noted. Amazing wrenches. Recommendations: Absolutely recommended if you want a great set of 1/4, 3/8, stubby 3/8, and 1/2 drive 3* ratchets. Notes: GearWrench has become my go to for tools with the fall of Craftsman. Kobalt was made in the same factory as one of the big two (Mac or snapon) like a decade ago, but no longer. I started out life with buying one of those 100piece sets from kobalt almost a decade ago, and that served me well. Recently though, I bought a big red 44" tool chest (always wanted one) and needed to fill it with all the sockets I could ever need, in every size, with no gaps. Because I wanted to. Not for any crazy project. After cruising Garage Journal for weeks, I settled on GearWrench and became hooked. After buying the 1/2" Metric set (which skips 25mm/1"), 1/2" SAE set (no skips), the 3/8 Metric and SAE set, and the 1/4" set, I obviously was obligated to buy this set of ratchets. Probably going to buy the crazy allen wrench/security fastener/whatever set as well. The quality of GearWrench as a brand is far and above what most big box stores sell. Sure you could spend as much as you would on a new truck buying from Snapon or MAC, but these are great. I have a full set of Snapon tools at work (I'm not a mechanic) and to my amateur hands, I can't feel or tell any noticeable difference in them. Highly recommended ... show more

  • Aircraft Mechanic
Size: 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" Drive Style: 4 Pc Flex Head Full Polish
These ratchets are very good. I am an aircraft mechanic but I also do work on my project motorcycle. These are very smooth and solid ratchets. I love how thin the heads are which helps in tight spaces. I thought the flex head would be annoying but they’re actually quite stiff, but not too stiff it is difficult to move when you want them to. Overall, seems as good if not better then tool truck for a better price. ... show more

  • Above Average Rachet set for great price. Very smooth Rachet!
Size: 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" Drive Style: 4 Pc Flex Head Full Polish
Great smooth action. Double pawl design is nice although I am not sure if this adds extra complications and possible malfunction possibilities in the future, but overall I am very pleased with these. Flex head is handy every once in a while. Comes with a nice foam holder to use with your tool chest. Quality is good. Way better than current Chinese made Craftsman. For the price I doubt you can get better. My mechanic friends always badgerd me that you can get rebuilt or used Snap on or Matcos for a better price. However I don't like buying used stuff. Also after using it, they all begrudgingly admitted the racheting action was impressive and smooth. My only gripe is the 3/8 is a little long for my taste, but that's me. makes me have to use the stubby more often then I would like. ... show more

  • Fantastic ratchets
Size: 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" Drive Style: 4 Pc Flex Head Full Polish
You cannot beat the quality vs. price on this ratchet set (and most Gearwrench products, really). These have the smallest swing arc in the industry (the fine smooth ratcheting is very satisfying), which is awesome, but it might make you think they can't handle a lot of torque because of that. Wrong: these ratchets have held up under some pretty intense usage and torque pressure. I have zero concerns about busting my knuckles or their durability. Plus, gearwrench stuff is easy to warranty. This quality set is worth hundreds more than it's price tag, if you consider their quality vs. brands like Snap-on and Matco. I am a diesel mechanic and my coworkers often make fun of me for buying "Discount tools" from brands like Gearwrench, Aircat, and Sunex, but they really don't know what they're missing. The quality of most of the tools from these brands are top notch. Maybe not *quite* as quality as the tool truck brands, but they rarely let me down, have great warranties, and are a fraction of tool truck prices. The only concern I have with buying these value tool brands is when I actually need something warrantied from the tool truck guys, they might give me a hard time because I hardly ever buy anything from them anymore! ;) ... show more

  • Really good looking set of ratchets Really good looking set of ratchets
Size: 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" Drive Style: 4 Pc Flex Head Full Polish
Bought this set of ratchets after one of my Home Depot Husky ratchets failed. Tried to warranty it at home depot and they no longer offer the same ratchet and they ended up giving me a gift card to cover getting a GearWrench ratchet from their website. But, after looking around a little, I found that I could buy this set for just a small amount more than the home depot gift card, and get FOUR ratchets, so I bought this set and will use the gift card for something else. Now, on to my impressions of these ratchets. They look really nice, smooth chrome body/handle. The ratchet mechanism is very fine, supposed to be 120 tooth, so the ratchet only has to move 3 degrees to catch the next ratchet tooth, meaning they will work in tighter areas. They also are all flex head ratchets, and there are detents for each position of the flex head, so they stay where you set them. They have a small lever to switch directions on the ratchet, much easier to use than the type where you turn the whole back side of the ratchet like my old Husky tool. One thing my old Husky ratchet had, that was very handy, was a knurled disc built into the ratchet that you could use to spin the head with your fingers while the socket was on the bolt head, the GearWrench ratchets don't have this. This ratchet set also comes with a thick high density foam tray that you can put in your tool box drawer to keep your ratchets organized. The tray holds the ratchets pretty tightly though, so we'll see how well it works in practice, may make it not so easy grab a ratchet out of the drawer. Overall, I'm impressed so far, but haven't had a chance to put all these ratchets to the test yet, but I think they will work well for me. ... show more
