Top Amazon Reviews

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Opal Ice Maker is beloved for producing crunchy ice in good quantities. Customers appreciate its quiet operation and speed. However, it requires regular cleaning and maintenance to function well, and some users had issues with the ice melting fast and the machine breaking down prematurely. Using distilled water, vacuuming the cooling unit, and oiling the motor were suggestions to improve the appliance's longevity.

Pros

  • 🔹Produces plenty of crunchy ice
  • 🔸Quiet and fast operation
  • 🔹Potentially improves with regular maintenance

Cons

  • 🔻Doesn't keep ice frozen for long
  • 🔺Issues with machine durability
  • 🔻Requires regular and diligent maintenance
  • 🔺Doesn't live up to its price tag for some users

Should I Buy It?

If you’re a fan of crunchy ice and don't mind committing to regular cleaning and maintenance, then the Opal Ice Maker could be a decent pick. However, given the variety of problems reported and the high price point, it may be worth considering other options or manufacturers.

  • A Great Ice Maker- if you maintain it
I brought ours a year ago to replace a much cheaper unit that didn't live up to expectations. In contrast, this unit produces plentiful amounts of wonderfully crunchy ice without any of the mold build up I found in unit it replaced. Cleaning and use has been a snap. However it's is not a fire and forget unit. If one doesn't clean it, it will complain with a groaning noise that will wake the dead. Take the once every month cleaning recommendation seriously. This is done by setting it to a clean cycle with a vinegar and water mix. I run it four times, let it set overnight and then run it twice more in the morning with plain water. You could do the cleaning with a bucket to empty the unit, but I found it easier to just set by the kitchen sink. That way I don't have to move it around as it's not the lightest appliance. Another maintenance issue is a motor inside the unit and that is more painful. It needs to be oiled now and then (so far about every 4 months) or again, grinding noises that are very undesired. Such noises indicate significant wear to me, so it must be dealt with. You have to remove the back plate (9 screws plus 2 on the top panel to free the backplate). The motor is on the left if you're facing the back and has visible fan on top. 3-in-1 oil or a spray equivalent at the join of the fan and motor does the job here. That may sound like a lot, and I'm sure it may gave some doubts on dropping the $$$ this unit costs. But if one is willing to do the work, the reward is all the wonderful ice that one could want. I've had it keep up with the needs of a half dozen people coming over for visits. ... show more

  • WORST ICE MAKER EVER - POOR QUALITY & LOUD!!
I purchased this GE PROFILE OPAL ICE MAKER because my ice maker in my fridge stopped working. This was by far one of the worst purchases I have ever made. Initially it worked great ( was a little louder than expected ) but made ice quickly. Than 45-60 days later ( after the return period expired ) it started making these extremely loud screeching noises that were soo bad I had to unplug the machine in order to make the noise stop. It made these sounds after the ice was made, before the ice was made and during making ice. Than the machine stopped producing ice all together but once in awhile (if I was lucky) it suddenly would make ice again however now it did not keep the ice frozen so if not used within 1 hour at best all the ice would melt and turn back to water and than it would not make any more ice at all. I have only owned this product since January 2023 and I can honestly say this is the worst piece of junk I ever wasted money on and wish I could get all my money back but as life would have it Amazon won’t help and GE wants me to pay to ship this 50 pound ice maker to them at my expense which is absurd since it’s their piece of crap that has malfunctioned . I am hoping no one will purchase this low quality piece of junk and instead try one of the other ice makers out there - DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT - it’s the worst !!!!! BTW, I cleaned the ice machine as instructed, I tried all the troubleshooting tips, I filled the tank with exactly the right amount of water ( to the fill line) . I unplugged it to give it rest . I had no objects obstructing it’s path for air to circulate to the motor . Just letting everyone know that I did everything necessary and possible to make this thing work and it just didn’t do anything except cost me $634.00 , a lot of aggravation not to mention I still have no ice and it takes up alot of space on my counter. Avoid this product buy something else for ice ... show more

  • Works Great and Easy to Use
I set this up on our kitchen counter. It works really well. It makes the smaller crunchy ice cubes my kids like. We live in Vegas and it gets hot, so we needed extra ice. I normally put the ice into the water dish for the dogs and my wife and kids use the ice to fill up their water containers before we go play 18 holes. I bought some empty ice bags and fill them up and store them in the freezer for days where we go to the lake or if we are going to be at the ballpark all day. I think the unit is a little pricey. Would be nice if the price was more affordable. Also, where we live we have hard water so I have to clean the unit every couple weeks. Cleaning is pretty simple. You just drain it and flush it out with vinegar. I tried to make flavored ice, which I do not recommend. It never turned out very well. That is beyond the scope of what the ice machine does. For regular ice it works great and the ice tastes great. ... show more

  • Works Well If You Follow Instructions
I really hesitated when ordering this due to all the reviews and videos of the unit making aweful noises. After the first day, my unit started making those noises and I was very concerned. I realized that the water reservoir had run dry (I had not yet installed the water tank). It starte making the noises again and I suspected that it was due to the heat that the unit puts out. I had this on my counter with a cabinet over top and right next to the fridge. I moved it out to the edge of the counter, made sure there was nothing on either side, and started it back up and did not have a problem after that. I have since installed the water tank and put the unit on a counter with nothing over the top and nothing on either side and it has been running perfectly. It is not silent by any means, it has compressor noise, motors, and ice dropping into the bin; however, the aweful noises others have had seem to be avoidable with a little care. ... show more
