I like the idea of refurbished items as part of the whole "reduce, reuse, recycle" way of life. I had a refurbished Opal 1.0 machine that served us very well for 2.5 years. When my Opal 1.0 started to fail, a refurbished 2.0 seemed like a good option. Sadly this machine was terrible on so many levels. First, most of the accessories that are supposed to come with it were not included. Then there was the noise. The machine was extremely loud from the start. Much louder than my old Opal machine. I told myself it was a different machine and maybe it was just louder. But everything kept going wrong. After the initial clean cycle when I tried making ice for the first time the machine wouldn't make ice, it just kept going into defrost cycle. I had to unplug it and let it sit for nearly an hour before trying again. (This was after letting the machine sit upright for 24 hours to make sure all the oil and whatever was back where it should be in case it had been tipping during transporting.) After that reset, the machine did start making ice. But it was seriously very loud. The machine worked ok for 9 days. Then it made a very strange whirring sound followed by more weird, very loud noises, then quieter noises and it stopped making ice completely. One thing to keep in mind, that I didn't think about until I read the manual I had to print out, GE's limited warranty applies to the original purchaser only. When you're buying a refurbished item, you are NOT the original purchaser! The GE limited warranty does not apply to you. Don't let yourself be fooled by any suggestion that GE is going to help you, you're not buying this from GE. In the end it worked out for me. My machine failed quickly enough that I was able to return it. It also gave me an opportunity to explore other brands and to realize there are better options. One thing that I realized was super weird about Opal machines is the descaling frequency, especially since they highly recommend using distilled water. I've seen many, many people saying they strictly use distilled water and still need to descale the machine monthly to get rid of scale build up in the machine. Yes, the machine will need to be cleaned to get rid of biofilm and other "yuck", but if you're using distilled water and getting scale in your machine that's super weird. Distilled water cannot have minerals, you're not getting scale from distilled water. If you like nugget style ice, do your research. There are better options out there. I was able to get a better machine, with side tank built-in, new (not refurbished) for less than this machine. If you just like the GE brand, you're probably better off buying new. The lower price of refurbished isn't worth the risks and lack of warranty. You'll also want the side tank because filling the water reservoir in this machine without the side tank is not easy. The ice basket is also not easy to remove, just plain difficult compared to the basket in my old Opal 1.0. I have no idea how easy it is to refill the side tank though since this didn't have one. In the end, I wouldn't recommend this machine, new or refurbished, to anyone. Which is sad because my family has been a GE family for generations. ... show more

if you are purchasing from Beach Camera, DO NOT DO IT. The ice maker that arrives will literally be unusable. The ice tray door doesn't even open up, it's blocked by something inside of the ice maker. The back panel will be bent, there will be something rattling around inside of the ice maker like a loose screw or something. When you plug it in, it will immediately start up with a noise even if you don't actually power on the ice maker. I don't even think Beach Camera made any valid attempt to "refurbish" or "refresh" this ice maker. I'm pretty sure they didn't even bother to check if the ice maker works, as in they didn't even check to see if the ice tray door would open. So, as an absolute warning, DO NOT BUY FROM BEACH CAMERA. I would honestly avoid anything that they sell on this website. ... show more

Amazon renewed product, was not really renewed. Back fan plate was bent in, arrived extremely dirty like it was used, and very loud squeal when operating. However to top it off, I went to send the product back only to be told I have to ship it back and pay for shipping rather than Amazon or the 3rd party seller (Through Amazon) offering to cover the shipping since it was defective. Returned the item, worst experience ever. Neither company compensated me for my out of pocket shipping fees. DO NOT SHOP FOR AMAZON RENEWED PRODUCTS, STEER CLEAR. Exceptional; it’s an "Amazon Renewed" product, but it’s completely new—I’d say it was never used. I don’t care about the original box; I care about the product. This model is the undisputed king of flake ice machines—by a wide margin. 06-28-2026 My joy was short-lived; an "add water" alarm went off and the machine stopped, even though the tank was full. I'm trying to fix the issue because I really love the machine. I'm dropping the rating to two stars; I'll write another review if it improves or if I end up returning it. ... show more
