    • GE Dehumidifier Does A Great Job in the Basement

I live in Georgia, and although it does not rain too terribly much where I live, my basement gets very humid. Our backyard is virtually all trees and a creek so I don’t know if this is the reason, but I think basements just get pretty humid as a rule. We have lived in the house over 20 years, and we are now on our third basement dehumidifier. One came with the house and lasted only two years. We bought a replacement off-brand one after that and that lasted about five years. The one we have now we have had for over thirteen years, but it still seems to be doing the job it is supposed to be doing. I have it set up to run for two hours, rest for four hours, run for two hours, rest for four, etc. I also have it setup to maintain a thirty percent humidity level in the air, and also to automatically drain the collected water from the unit out to the dirt outside the basement door. Even though the unit is still working I am almost positive that it is at the end of its life. Because of this, I went ahead and bought this GE dehumidifier. This GE portable humidifier arrived in perfect condition. All of the parts were intact and well protected during shipment. I immediately brought it down to my basement to replace my older one and put the old one in the garage. This GE model is great, as it has wheels and built-in side handles to make it easy to move around until you find the perfect spot for it. Setting it up was a breeze as the settings were very similar to the previous dehumidifier. I set the desired humidity level, as well as the fan level. I also attached the drain hose to the back of the unit so the water drains directly through the wall into the dirt outside the basement door. This is a much more convenient option than to have to manually empty the water tank manually every few days. Plus, there is an automatic warning light that illuminates when the filter needs to be removed and cleaned. This humidifier seems very hardy, and that it should last for a while. GE products have always been good for me. I have always been impressed with the quality and ease of using GE products. This dehumidifier is rated for a 3000 square foot space, which is very large. It can extract up to 35 pints of water from the air on a daily basis which is about double the previous humidifier capacity. This GE is also pretty quiet compared to what I was using. One other great feature is that if your drain hose becomes loose, the water will automatically reroute to the removable basin. If the basin then becomes full, the machine will automatically shut off until you empty the tank which will prevent water from overflowing in the basin. I am totally satisfied with this purchase, but if anything changes in the near future, I will come back and edit this review. I would consider this an A+ without a doubt. I ordered this GE SmartPortable Dehumidifier with WiFi to make my home more comfortable during the 3/4 of the year that we battle high humidity. I already own a Frigidaire dehumidifier of the same size that will be moved upstairs, giving us full house coverage. It is amazing what a difference the dehumidifier makes in our home. I am able to keep the thermostat a little higher since the oppressive humidity has been removed. This saves a lot of money on my power bill, while also making me more comfortable. This 50 pint GE dehumidifier can handle between 2,000 and 5,000 square feet of living space, depending on how damp the space is. The dehumidifier comes fully assembled. The only thing to do is plug it in. It is important to wait to plug the machine in until it has been upright for at least two hours due to the compressor. Don't neglect this step. I let mine sit upright for a full day before starting it up for good measure. Setup was easy with the SmartHQ app. I enjoy being able to heck and/or adjust the settings right from my phone instead of having to make the changes on the machine. The app notifies me when the bucket is full or removed, which allows me to minimize downtime. The machine pauses until the bucket is emptied. I really appreciate this since our other dehumidifier continued to run with the bucket out of place, destroying our baseboard trim with the water it dumped on the floor. It sets my mind at ease knowing that will not happen with this GE dehumidifier. I like the Smart Dry setting, which automatically adjusts the fan speed to accomodate the current humidity level. Speaking of the fan, it can be loud on the high setting. The GE dehumidifier runs louder than the Frigidaire model. It's my one and only complaint about this GE Dehumidifier. The sound difference is minimal. The machine shuts off once it reaches the desired humidity level. The GE dehumidifier functions very well at keeping my home at an ideal humidity level. The current price of $309 is typical for a name brand dehumidifier of this size. Off brand dehumidifiers may be a bit cheaper, but I don't have faith in their performance or longevity. ... show more

Well, everyday is an opportunity to learn a new thing and this week I learned about humidity in my basement thanks to this GE Dehumidifier. Unboxing and set up was easy (removed some tape and added the casters). Downloading the GE App SmartHQ and pairing it via Bluetooth with the 50 pint dehumidifier took a bit but finally got it matched up. Now I can see the dehumidifier’s progress on my cell phone. I set it up in the basement which is used daily expecting to see a small return on investment and a quick way to see if it was working properly. At the time I turned it on, the humidity in the basement was 60%. Within 2 hours it was 55% and within 4 more hours, it had filled the 50 pint tank the first time. I turned it off that night and back on in the morning where it filled the tank again and brought the humidity down to 45%. We dumped the tank twice yesterday. I let it run overnight and it is still at 45% but filled the tank again today before dinner. So clearly, we have a lot more humidity than I expected in a basement that doubles as storage and houses a full pantry. The dehumidifier is using almost 12 kWH of energy each day. Not sure what that means to my power bill but I am sure it benefits everything in my basement. I live in Washington State and we have a lot of rain in our area but I was surprised at how much moisture the dehumidifier has pulled out of the air in less than 3 days.
