We purchased the GE AWGP08WWA 8,000 BTU Smart Heat/Cool Window Air Conditioner for our 200 sqft enclosed porch in Texas, which previously had no heating or cooling. Since the porch gets direct sunlight most of the day, it tends to feel like an oven in the summer and like a refrigerator in the winter. So far, this unit has effectively handled both heating and cooling, but as we’re just entering the early summer heat, I’m curious to see how it performs during July and August, when Texas can get particularly brutal. The installation process was quite easy. The included kit had everything we needed, and it fit our standard window frame without any modifications or extra trips to the hardware store. With two people, we set it up in about 30 minutes. The unit feels solid and sturdy; it hasn’t rattled or made any unusual noises, which I was initially concerned about with a window air conditioner. In terms of cooling, it brings the porch down to a comfortable temperature fairly quickly, usually within 20 to 30 minutes, especially if we start it before the space gets too hot. The heat pump is a great feature for cooler nights—we’ve used it a few times when temperatures dipped into the 40s, and it warmed the porch evenly without that burnt-dust smell that some heaters produce. Although the 8,000 BTU rating is technically suitable for up to 350 sqft, making it slightly oversized for our 200 sqft space, I believe that’s why it has been so effective so far. The Wi-Fi feature with the SmartHQ app is a standout. I can turn it on from my phone while I’m at work, so the porch is cool by the time we get home. The app is reliable, although it took a little time to figure out the setup. You can also adjust fan speeds and modes through the app. Speaking of modes, the Eco Mode works as advertised—it turns off the fan once the room reaches the set temperature, and I’ve noticed that our electric bill hasn’t increased as much as I anticipated. We usually operate it on low or medium fan speed, which has been sufficient. The remote control is straightforward, but I primarily use the app. While the unit isn’t completely silent, the noise is more of a steady hum that blends into the background and doesn't drown out conversations or the TV. My only complaint is that the filter could be easier to remove for cleaning; it’s a bit tricky to take out without feeling like you might break something. Overall, this air conditioner has been a solid addition, making our porch usable year-round.     • Just What I Needed

I've always trusted GE. I've had so many of their appliances and products, I am at the point where I see the name and automatically feel at ease choosing an item. This air conditioner is no different - and much better than I'd even hoped for. First off I have to say I live in a very old home, over 200 years old, and the way it's built there is no good way to install whole house hvac, so for years I've battled window air conditioners and space heaters. Enter this unit - how wonderful it is to be able to finally have both heating and air in my office! My office is 16x16, and after testing the unit, I couldn't be more pleased with the air conditioning... I'm fussy about my temps in my office, due to a lot of computer equipment, it needs to be kept cool, and I couldn't be more pleased with the performance. The heater also works wonderfully, and since I got it in the spring, I was able to test both functions on chilly and hot days. The heat feels warm and inviting, gently filling the room (and very quietly, which surprised me!). The unit is easy to clean as well - some window units just become a mess, but this one gives you very good access. It installed easily with two people doing it (I recommend two people, if you can't get someone to help, put the unit on a rolling table and bring it to your window that way to install). My favorite part of it is the fact that I can use it with an app - finally after all these years, a real thermostat for heating and cooling right on my phone - this alone is worth buying it for. A beautiful, sturdy unit as well, fit easily into my window and I had no problems with setup at all. Noise levels on both heating and cooling were surprisingly low while the temperature remained on a comfortable level.
