  • Custom OEM item; complies with Chinese standard, not UL certified
Style: Wall Alarm
TL; DNR ; OEM version of a Chinese manufacturer's QG002-sensor model ; complies with the (obsolete) Chinese standard GB15322.2-2013 ; not certified to the UL1484 Residential Gas Detectors standard ; three alarm threshold levels based on ppm detection (not %LEL) ; sensitivity drifts cannot be monitored in-between recalibrations ; must be placed 6" or less from ceiling (natural gas) or floor (LP) ; does not include carbon monoxide detection or WiFi capability. I purchased this cordless plug-in detector for the natural-gas furnace closet of my house, a room in which an electrical outlet close to the ceiling was installed by a foresighted builder. It has been in use with no issues for less than a month. SOURCE. # 1. The claim that "[w]e are an American company" and absence of country-of-manufacture detail misled me in thinking that the detector had been developed under US standards -- it hasn't. It is an OEM customization of the basic "PROG" model with a QG002 sensor of Soan Electronic Technology, a Shenzhen (China) company offering wholesale OEM/ODM products and brand customization services. It is imported and sold here as the "GasKnight Original model" by Chicago Superior Products, the owner of the GasKnight mark. After my purchase, I found another OEM version of this detector sold here by a different seller at a lower price. SPECS # 2. Its dimensions, a bit smaller than the ones in this page, are shown in my attached image. The device has a warm-up time of 180 seconds (during which the alarm mode warnings can be tested by tapping the front plate); after that, a blue LED flashes at 40-second intervals in operating mode. Unlike devices based on a percentage of the lower explosive limit [LEL] of the gas, this detector deploys 3 alarm levels based on the gas concentration: "0-2000" ppm, 2000-3500 ppm, and above 3500 ppm -- the ppm count above zero which triggers the first alarm level (suspected gas leak) is a mystery. # 3. The type of sensing used by the detector is not provided. Nevertheless, its installation restrictions and warm-up time suggest a metal-oxide semiconductor sensor (in which the electrical resistance is proportional to the gas concentration); a Soan photo of the QG002 circuit board, available on the Web, supports that. Like in other sensors that use a heating element, there is a gradual degradation over time with sensitivity drifts, and the detector needs recalibration every 6 months -- to do that, unplug it and then plug it back (with no gas in the environment). Its nominal lifespan is 5 years. STANDARDS # 4. The detector complies with the 2003 version of the Chinese standards GB 15322.2 and 15322.5 "Combustible gas detectors", now superseded by the 2019 version implemented in late 2020. The device is marked as EU's CE and RoSH compliant. Be aware it has not been certified to the ANSI/UL standard 1484 "Residential Gas Detectors" that covers electrically operated detectors for residential occupancies and recreational vehicles. # 5. At the time of this writing, the sixth figure at the top of this page includes an FCC mark. That is a silly sales hype; this Soan model lacks wireless capability and does not need FCC approval. Soan has an FCC application (2ATRQ), but not for this basic gas detector. WHERE TO INSTALL IT # 6. Its User Manual, available from the dot-com gasknight website, indicates where to install the sensor according to the type of gas (methane, the lighter-than-air main component of natural gas settles at the highest room level; heavier-than-air propane or butane settle at the lowest level). The manual positions the sensor 1 to 3 ft from the ceiling for natural gas. This does not match the National Fire Protection Association conclusion of its August 2020 study that: [ i ] the closer the detector is to the ceiling, the more likely it would detect gas leaks (detectors 6" or closer having significantly a improved performance for thresholds of 10% and 25% LEL); and [ ii ] "if a sensor cannot be placed this close to the ceiling, it should be placed at least above the highest doorway opening." The manual is also at variance with the EU's EN 50244:2016 standard recommendation of installing propane sensors as low as possible, typically 4", above the floor. WHERE NOT TO INSTALL IT # 7. The manual also indicates where not to install the sensor, but only in a general way. Per the EN 50244:2016 standard, avoid: an enclosed space; directly above a sink; next to a door or window; next to an exterior fan; an area whose temperature may reach below 14°F or above 104°F; where dirt and dust may block the sensor vents; any damp or humid location; too close to openings or ventilation ducts; or immediately above or next to a gas appliance since the small releases that can happen before appliance ignition may trigger unwanted alarms. Because temperature and humidity affect the detector, and sensitivity drifts cannot be monitored between recalibrations (there is no display of ppm counts), be sure to observe such recommendations. LIMITATIONS # 8. By and large, the most critical limitation of the device is being a plug-in *cordless* sensor. This is particularly true in the case of a natural gas supply, when the sensor need be very close to the ceiling, a place where houserooms rarely have outlets. The alternative is a device with a suitably long cord (called tacky here by the same seller that calls stylish its corded GasKnight model). # 9. Unlike some other residential gas leak detectors, this one does not include detection of carbon monoxide, nor it has WiFi capabilities to warn remotely of a gas leak. __ ... show more

  • Not Sure I Will Keep This Thing....
Style: Wall Alarm
Plugged it in and was immediately greeted with "Warming Up" as stated in the instructions. Ok fine..But this continued multiple times. I can see where this is headed...a brief power hit or outage in the middle of the night and her annoying "Warming Up" Voice starts up...and I will throw it out the door as it screams "Warming Up" for the umpteenth time. It's tough to justify a UPS for just this device to ride thru power hits. Update: The seller contacted me immediately; and has provided return and full refund. Thank You. ... show more

  • Ease of use feel safer
Style: Wall Alarm
Received the product in a timely manner. The manual was very clear and easy to follow for set up and more importantly how to do the 6 month safety check to ensure working properly. The manual also clearly stated the product should last for 5 years and if you register it they provide an extra year warranty. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised to receive a email from the company asking if I liked the product. I feel safer as I know the GasKnight is active by just looking at its blue light. I am confident should a problem arise the Company will stand by the product. So far, extremely pleased with the quality, accuracy, and cost. My previous detectors barely lasted 12-14 months were expensive and hard to set up and checking (testing) was a Joke. Glad I found GasKnight will highly recommend ... show more

  • Great product
Style: Wall Alarm
Great product and equally great customer service. I purchased because I have three young children and a gas stove. I couldn’t find any knob covers that would work with my stove so I had to look at other options as they have accidentally turned The gas on a couple times. It is very unobtrusive and looks good in my kitchen, and I know it works as the kids knocking the burners resulted in a “test”. Has definitely given me some peace of mind. ... show more

I recently purchased this wall plug Gas Detector, and it has already proven its worth in a rather unexpected way. This compact device has truly been a lifesaver at our house parties! During a recent gathering, a friend accidentally bumped into the stove, causing it to slightly move. Thanks to this gas detector, we were promptly alerted to the presence of gas in the air. It's incredible how fast it responded! We were able to address the situation immediately, ensuring everyone's safety. Not only does this detector provide peace of mind on a daily basis, but it also showcased its effectiveness in real-life scenarios. I highly recommend this Wall Plug Gas Detector to anyone who values safety, especially during social gatherings. It's a small investment that can make a big difference in unexpected situations. ... show more

  • Excellent customer service
Style: Wall Alarm
Have had the product for about a year. It worked fine until it didn’t. HOWEVER, when it quit working properly, I contacted the company who replaced it immediately. The rep asked a few questions to determine if it was placed properly and was there a power surge. I received the replacement within a few days. I appreciate a company who stands behind their products. ... show more
