Super simple to use, but there is a bit of a learning curve to it - just follow the instructions and you'll get the hang of it. I was using this to identify leaks inside the plastic HVAC housing that holds the expansion core and valve in cars. Makes it super easy to test for leaks by simply removing the HVAC fan and snaking the probe tip in where it needs to go, instead of removing the whole housing (can be very difficult, or sometimes impossible without opening the AC lines to remove). Also helpful if the expansion core/valve are leaking on the back side, where it is very hard (or impossible, due to clearances) to sneak a borescope in if you're checking for UV dye. I would definitely recommend, just note that this will only work if the AC system is still has some charge in it (it will only detects leaks that are ACTIVELY leaking). ... show more

For proper functioning it needs fresh batteries. Then it works great. Once I got new batteries, the issue was found immediately. My AC was holding vacuum perfectly for days, but would leak out charge overnight. It detected evaporator leak as soon as I opened the car door and pinpointed it precisely. Just mind the fact that the nozzle mustn’t make contact with anything otherwise it gives false positive. ... show more

I knew that I had a very small leak in a mini-split system. I tired the soap bubble method to detect the leak but still couldn't spot the leak. This leak detector found the leak with the sensitivity set to maximum. I would very highly recommend this leak detector.

After reading reviews where people said it didn't work on obvious leaks (like open cans of refrigerant), I was hesitant to buy this. But I really needed to find a leak so I took the plunge. My issue is the exact opposite; no matter how low I dialed the setting, it triggered the alarm. It looked like every one of my fittings was leaking. I thought I had at least enough competency to get at least ONE of the fittings right so I immediately became suspect. I had the system evacuated and hooked up my air compressor to fill it full of air. Then got out a spray bottle with some water and dishwasher soap and started spraying fittings. After a few minutes, it was clear I had a leaking Schrader valve on the high pressure side as it was bubbling. So I replaced that and put it under vacuum a week ago; no leaks so far. I think this is a nice item and the price point can't be beat but it just didn't work for me. ... show more

I bought an earlier version of this detector a few years back. At the time I used it to help detect a leaking Schraeder valve on my truck. It detected the leak at the time and there was great happiness in the land. Fast forward to this afternoon, when I tried to use the detector to check for leaks on my car. My AC slowly gave out on the way home and I was sure it was a leak, but I didn't know where. Fresh set of batteries (I don't keep batteries in any of my tools if I can help it), turn it on, and it IMMEDIATELY starts to alarm no matter where the sensitivity knob is set. I turn it off and on again but it does this 2-3 more times. Finally I shut it off and turn it back on, and it reacts normally, IE no false alarms. Of course, now I don't trust it. I put the probe near the low-side port on my car's AC system and blip the Schrader valve just enough to release a tiny burst of refrigerant. The detector does not detect anything. I do this 2-3 more times, turning the power off and back on between attempts. The detector never so much as caught a whiff of the escaping refrigerant, no matter where the sensitivity knob is set. It should, considering it's designed to detect leaks much tinier than the artificial ones I was creating. So, I'm out 20ish bucks because the detector went straight into the trash can. I bought this thing based on excellent reviews and price, but I think next time around I'm going to spend a little more and get something I can trust a couple of years down the line. Unless you're on a really tight budget, I suggest you do the same. ... show more
