The ACE 300 detector is everything I would expect at this price point. - Good depth and separation, with decent components and features. However, there are a couple of issues. First, the plastic tension screw on the top of the coil doesn't provide enough tension, which causes a constant battle to keep the preferred detecting angle. I tried cranking the screw down to the point that I felt like it would break, then bought a suitable replacement at the hardware store. The second issue is not a problem with the detector itself but with the included headphones. Yes, I realize that headphone quality is subjective, but the included headphones are an obvious downgrade (in my opinion) in quality from those pictured on the box, in ads and on the 'Zon. The headphones in the ad are Garrett's 'Clearsound' versus the 'Treasure Sound' which actually came in the box. They sell separately at a similar price but the Treasure Sound headphones are reminiscent of the type you find in the clearance rack in a 7-Eleven for $4 in 1992. The have a plastic snap-on cover on each earphone that seemingly serve no real purpose other than to display the corporate name, and repeatedly detach from the headphones at the least provocation. I will be replacing theheadphones with a better set ASAP. Is this an earth-shattering deficiency? 'No.' Is it bait-and-switch? Also 'No.' But it needs to be changed or disclosed prior to sale. Garrett is far too established and known in the industry to engage in deceptive practices. The upside is that this is a solid detector and a good backup to my high-end Minelab detector that I can keep at my outdoor worksite for occasional lunchtime use.

Ran into a hiccup with the first order of the metal detector I ordered for Christmas. The shipper lost the first one I ordered enroute so I had to re-order. I waited until Christmas was over to re-order. Anyhow, everyone was anxiously awaiting it. I got it assembled a couple nights ago, but didn't have a chance to try it out. My son got home, sees it propped up in the corner and first thing he asks is if I tested it. I told him I didn't have time. So what's he do? He grabs it, turns it on and comes over to my chair and directs it to my knees. It goes off quite loud. He exclaims, "yep it works!!" It detected my titanium knees quite well. Right now we took it to visit my daughters family in Florida. My teenage granddaughter and 4 year old grandson took it out this afternoon and had no problem finding buried items. They live on a mini farm so no shortage of things to find. They had a blast. The beach will be the next stop. Haven't had a chance to really do anything challenging yet. If I have any issues I will revise accordingly. I do have one nit though. It does not come with a full manual. The full manual can be downloaded online. If someone older or not familiar with computers ordered this they probably would be very frustrated.

I have a sawmill and I have recently been getting a lot of tree service logs which come from peoples yards, so there is no end to the types of metals grown inside of these trees. My new Garrett ACE 400 is amazing it can detect metal over 8 inches and it tells me exactly how deep the metal is. I'm sorry I waited so long to purchase and my grandson can't wait to use it for gold hunting.

I needed to find a property marker. I tried to dig for it with no luck - and I knew within a few feet where it was! I used this Garrett detector and I found it in five minutes!!! This detector has a pinpoint function which shows a location strength bar and I could see it get higher and lower in a 10 inch left to right sweep and 10 inch up and down sweep. I pinpointed the marker and dug down 2 inches deeper and found it immediately. Paid for itself in its first outing. I also found my dirt in the northeast has lots of minerals that sets off the detector on any setting over 2 bars. I ordered the super sniper coil which should work better in my soil when looking for small items like coins.
