  • Nice GPS
Had to return a different GPS as it would tell the wife to turn around if she ignored the misdirection of that device. This is working perfectly. Easy to program and enter addresses; quickly recalculates if a turn is missed. Great battery life noted on our one trip with it so far. Shape is sleek but not as stable as old Garmin unit unless inserted in the supplied mount, which the wife doesn't want to "bother with". Update was a breeze with the app and a PC. ... show more

  • GPS For Law Enforcement
Purchased this GPS to assist with navigation and environment orientation while operating as a municipal police officer. Worked flawlessly, and accurately displayed street names and locations. My favorite feature was the display of the nearest cross-street, which was invaluable in knowing my location for calls. ... show more

  • Good basic GPS. Online info about features is confusing.
This is a very good basic GPS. However Garmin's online documentation is a mess. It's hard to tell what its true capabilities are. So to clarify .... What it can do: - Point to point navigation. The database of addresses and POI's is comprehensive and easy to use. The touch screen works very well. The display is bright and resistant to glare, much more so than my phone. - Custom routes: You can build custom routes in Garmin Basecamp, Komoot, or various other software packages, then export them to the device as .GPX files, using Basecamp. Some notes on this: 1. It's possible to connect the Drive 53 to Garmin Basecamp even though Garmin's documentation says you can't. 2. When navigating a custom route, every time you miss a turn or otherwise go off route, the Drive 53 will recalculate, but instead to the shortest route, not back to the custom route. You'll need to open the Routes function and reload. A 3 click process. Considering most GPS software (Google Maps) doesn't even allow custom routes, I'll accept this inconvenience. What it can't do: - Connect to the Garmin Drive app on your phone to provide traffic info and voice control. The Garmin online manual and an online help video explicitly say this is possible and provide instructions on how to do it, but it's not. I can only guess this capability used to exist and they removed it to lower the price point. It is available in the Garmin DriveSmart 66 and above models. Other quibbles: - The ball to ring mount is tensioned with a snap ring. There's no screw collar or other provision to tighten it down. On rough roads the unit gradually tilts down and has to be periodically repositioned. I'm concerned this may get worse as the mount wears. All in all for the price it's a good unit. The custom routing feature is much appreciated. Just understand what you're getting. ... show more

  • Very good device
Works very well. Very accurate with good verbal directions to accompany visual directions. Did you know that unless you have special phone plans, your mobile phone GPS won’t work as soon as you cross the Canada border? This device avoids that nasty surprise.

  • Great little unit
I previously had a Garmin Nuvi2555 and I’d loved it. I like simplicity, not a lot of bells and whistles. I just want to know how to get where I want to go and back again. This GPS is very comparable to my Nuvi, but it was 12+ years old and quit so I needed a replacement. (It only steered me wrong 3 times in all those years!) The Drive 53 is just what I wanted. The functions are pretty much the same with a few extras. It’s easy to operate, but be sure you get a memory card. You cannot update without one. There are higher priced units that offer more options, with bigger screens, but if you just want basic functions made by someone who’s been doing it successfully for many years, this is a great unit. For the difference in cost get the “new” not the refurbished. ... show more

  • Decent, could be better, could be much worse.
Decent if you want to get where you’re going but by far not amazing. Keep reading for in depth review I wanted to wait till I had done a few trips to give this an accurate/fair review. The last gps system I used was a 20 year old garmin that still works to this day. I typically drive with the gps on any time the truck is on as I like seeing all the hidden map details around me. I also recently went on a trip from the states to Canada and back with the gps. Below are my pros and cons Pros I find it is a very easy system to use right out of the box. The UI (user interface) if fairly stray forward to use after about 10mins of playing with it. Setting a destination is fairly easy. When you are driving a planned route it will show you nearest amenities (hotel, fuel, food) off to the side with a distance tracker. The touch screen is very responsive and has a good brightness for sunny days. It has an on board battery, but I have mine set to turn on and off with my truck. It also automatically converts mph-kph speed limits when planning routes into different countries it will display mph adjusted for kph or covers as well. 98% it will show where you are with accuracy. You can change how much information is displayed on the map view. Cons Consistently 70-80% of the time my speed is off based on the gps. Typically it will say I am going 10mph fast than my actual speed I have never seen it say less than the actual speed. It often not display many side streets or will not say the names of side streets you are passing. I have found it will display the wrong speed limit for an area. Many roads by me it will always say are 30mph when they are 55mph and never said a different limit in their history. In conclusion. It seems like a decent system but it has some minor flaws. This would be a good system if you wanted directions but you have to still me mindful of the road around you. ... show more
