I bought this to replace my 5 year old Garmin 51, which still works by the way. The Garmin 53 arrived well packaged and as with all the Garmin units I previously bought worked right out of the box! Fit and finish is very good, power up was easy, and satellite lock took less than a minute. Inputting addresses was no problem with the keyboard, and customization for your vehicle and driving preferences are more than adequate. Screen was clear and visible, with sharp detail. I had some grumbles with my old TomTom, so when it finally bit the dust, I was open to a new brand. Well, since TomTom and Magellan no longer make car GPSs, Garmin is our only choice now, anyway. The most important function for any GPS is to navigate. This one very frequently loses its satellite connection. The map freezes, and a banner says Lost Satellite Reception or Acquiring Satellites. I've gotten to driving locally with it turned on just so I can monitor this, and it occurs randomly and stays this way for many minutes at a time. Meanwhile, I've passed 50+ potential turnoffs. Because of this problem, this device is worthless. Even while this GPS is working, while driving on an interstate, it will frequently direct me to take an exit, then re-enter the interstate at the same exit. Maybe it was two feet shorter? A Garmin GPS I used in a rental car 20 years ago did this, but I thought that Garmin would have corrected that by now--wrong. Also, this thing occasionally loses its view settings, so the perspective changes drastically, and good luck figuring out how to get it back. Even switching places with my passenger the last time this happened, it took me at least ten frustrating minutes to figure it out. Very unintuitive. So bottom line, I do not recommend this device. However, all the competition is gone. The world wants us to rely on our phones for road navigation. I could live with that if I had a cell signal in all the wilderness areas I frequent, but that doesn't work either. Our technology has gone backwards. ... show more

    • Great product, but LOTS of issues installing maps & getting help!

I got this Drive 53 in order to help me navigate in Amsterdam & the Netherlands. Got it to work, but had lots of issues: 1) Had to buy micro SD card with Europe maps because download wouldn’t work. Customer Service was arrogant & lied to me about it, & then said “fine” when I told them that I’d return everything for refunds if it didn’t work. 2) Got SD card installed, but had trouble with Drive 53 not “seeing” the maps. 3) It took multiple chats with Garmin to get “GPS Simulator” turned on so that I could test out everything from home. 4) Even then, a couple of last problems that I had to figure out on my own to get it finished. 3* review given all of the problems that I had. Fine for use in the US, but beware if you want to use it anywhere else in the world! ... show more

I bought this for a trip to France, and Belgium and other places. I drove more then 700km in cities, highways and country. I had to purchase a database ($50) from Garmin but it was worth every penny. The streets, highways, and other related database features were all up to date and the real time traffic updates were very helpful. The battery last for about 30mins but, I mostly used it plugged in. The smaller size is great for travel and does not take up a lot of room on the windshield. ... show more
