This is my first golf watch (Garmin S40), and I am very happy with my purchase. I have been using it for about 4 months and it has been great. To start it looks stylish on or off the course, and if I go away for a golf weekend it is my only watch I take. Battery life is good, can get 2 rounds in with it but often charge it in between rounds cause it is so easy and quick to charge. When not on the course the battery life is great, probably a week or two. (never fully tested the life) And the watch face looks cool. I tried using all the functionality out of the gate, entering which club I hit, recording distances, scoring including putts, etc. That quickly became overwhelming and in my opinion, takes away from the fun of the sport. I spent way too much time looking down and the watch, and not enjoying the round. I tuned it back to use scoring, and of course, give me ranges. I find the ranges accurate, and good enough that I don't carry my laser range finder anymore. Really like having distances to the front and back of the green, often that is more important to me than the pin. And of course, the hazard distances are key, you can quickly see bunkers and water distances which really helps with club selection. And it's quick, no pulling the range finder out of the bag. My one tip, read the manual... so you know how to access some of the features. Once you know the clicks, it easy to get the information you want. My buddy has the S20 and that watch does seem as easy to use as mine. I've heard people complain about the 'locating satellites' taking too long to find your course but honestly just start the search when you're 10 mins from the course and you will be fine. It will get the course loaded, and then you can skip that option when you are ready to start the round. If you are wondering if you will miss not having the full map of the hole I can see that concern (like the S60). My perspective, I only need that on courses I have never played. And the map on the watch would be quite small, probably too small for me. (sucks getting old). In those cases, I usually have the yardage book anyways or just open a free Golf GPS app on the phone and get my overview of the hole. I highly recommend this watch and would suggest that if you are on the fence give it a shot. You won't be disappointed. (and no, I paid for the watch myself... and no one paid me to write this review) ... show more

Wow, I have to admit, I'm impressed by how good this watch is. I've had an older model Approach for about 3 seasons now and got this one only because I saw a good deal on an open box. But I'm really glad that my old one is now my back up. The screen on this is very readable in all lighting, it is very light and comfortable to wear as I play. The accuracy is terrific, it locks onto the course very quickly and the battery life is very good. I'm sure I could get 2 rounds of golf from every full charge (tho I always seem to charge it before every round anyway - habit from the older model I suppose). It registers every shot you take - if you use this feature - extremely effectively. My guess is that it has automatically picked up at least 95% of my swings during every round (meaning that I've rarely had to add a swing/shot manually). The features of the watch are pretty intuitive after you've used it a couple times. The Garmin golf app is also really good and appears to have been upgraded and improved recently, but I haven't checked it out thoroughly yet. If I had any criticism at all - more suggestion really - it would be to reorder the menu options on the watch. For example, the Last Shot option - i think - should be one of the first listed while you're playing instead of being 5th or 6th. While I'm playing each hole I should be able to get to Last Shot right away, certainly before the Scorecard since I won't use that until the hole is completed. As I said, a suggestion more than a criticism. Great watch for golfers and works great add a watch and fitness tracker. Highly recommended! ... show more

I have played with this watch for a a few rounds and overall I am pleased. It's pretty accurate and doesn't get in the way. I play with a caddy usually and the difference it yardages I get and what the watch say are a almost. spot on. I have admit that the the ability to move the flag is cool, but it's not always easy to see exactly where the pin is from the fairway and I have a hard time getting the flag into the right position on the watch at times.     • Better than the S60 in my opinion.
I read some of the reviews on this piece and thought it would be important for the Garmin Golf watch loyalist to compare the S40 (this unit) and the S60 (which is a more expensive unit that came out last year). I owned the S60. It was a good piece but there were two issues with it that made me try to new and supposedly downgraded S40. The issues in the S60 were the battery. I couldn't play 36 holes in a day without the unit dying and the touch targeting feature. With thick fingertips, I couldn't accurately touch target a distance for where I wanted my ball to travel on an approach shot. I found I seldom used this upgraded feature. Now to the S40, which doesn't have touch targeting. I have not missed that feature at all and what the S40 has instead that the S60 does not is a "distance to" feature such as distance to bunkers, distance to layup, distance to dog leg and I prefer that over the touch targeting. The grey S40 is also a much nicer watch. People notice and compliment it. Not that it matters to me but it's just a nicer watch as opposed to the all black version. So what is the S40 missing/lacking? In my opinion it is missing just one feature and that is a diagram of the full hole. The S60 shows the entire hole whereas the S40 only shows an image of the green. Other than that, for me this is a superior watch with a superior battery for a cheaper price. No brainer IMO!!! ... show more

I've had this watch for 2 months and I couldn't be happier. Used it on the course for the first time yesterday and today. This thing does so much and is super easy to navigate. Yardage is accurate, lets u know how far hazards are gives you layup yardage. after the round is over you it shows you how many steps you took, because you should be walking, Cart's are for pussies...converts the steps to miles and tells you how long the round took. Its so easy to keep score. Once you start the round and choose to keep score, the watch buzzes when you arrive at the next tee box showing the previous hole you just played and what par for that hole is. Simply click DONE if you got a par or hit the + or - for above or below par. If you download the app on your phone, the watch syncs with the phone and you have access to an amazing amount of information about your round. For under 200.00 I don't think you can go wrong. I bought it because I walk when I play. I would buy it again just for the yardage and scoring features, but with everything else this does, it's a no brainier. It is also very comfortable, at first I thought the band was kind of cheap maybe a little flimsy but it's great you don't even notice it on your wrist. Great product. ... show more

My old Garmin S2 served me well but was nearing end of life, so I took the opportunity to purchase the S40 when it went on sale. Everything is better about this watch, but the biggest thing for me is the battery life. I can get at least two and usually three rounds out of a single charge. And speaking of charging, the S40 charges very quickly, once again a huge improvement over my old watch. The touchscreen is easy to read, and adjusting pin placement is easy as well. GAME CHANGER! After reading reviews I was apprehensive, but it's very intuitive to use. I didn't get the CT10 club inserts but don't need them. The S40 detects shots very well and asks after each shot what club you used. Then the Garmin Golf app gives you great feedback stats. Great watch for the price! The watch gives you distance to front/middle/back of green and distance from your last shot. I even measured my friends' drives for them. I played 45 holes today in 9 hours (in play mode) and still had 66% battery life. ... show more

    • Easy to use for basic functions
S40 connects to GPS and finds the golf course fairly quickly and shows distances to the green quite clearly. I like that it also attempts to show distances to hazard and dog legs though these are not that easy to read. I also like the "autoshot" function which shows how far the last shot went as you walk up to the ball. What I dislike is that you have to completely switch off the device to go between the clock function and golf gps mode - you cannot see the time while playing golf and need to carry another device to see the time. Other cons are the Quick Start Manual and Owners manual (available online) and the charging cable connector that does not connect firmly to the Golf watch. ... show more
