  • Meh.

Bought this to replace a 10 year old G6 whose on/off button broke. At first blush, I thought that the g30 was a real upgrade. Then I realized that the power port on the back was mounted at 90 degrees to the body. This creates the potential of it breaking if/when it's accidentally bumped when the power cord is plugged in. Bad design, guys. Second, getting to the scorecard is a pain with having to navigate through a few menus with my admittedly fat fingers. Then when entering the score, it captures total strokes without allowing for a separate entry for putts. To continue to play and get back to the course layout requires backing out through all the same menus. Sigh. My group likes to play fast and fiddling around with this process takes too much time. And patience. On the plus side, reasonably accurate, legible screen, light weight, holds a charge for 2-3 rounds. ... show more

  • Good replacement for the G6
Style: GPS
Bought this to replace my G6, which finally broke (power button) after 10 years. I don't like wearing a watch, and I want something small to slip into my pocket, so this fits the bill. Functionally, it's pretty much identical to the G6, except for the loss of two dedicated hard buttons (you touch soft buttons on the screen instead). The screen is about the same size as the G6, but sharper. Battery life has been excellent so far. My only annoyance is that you have to touch the screen once to wake it up after it's been idle for a few minutes, and that touch does not do anything else. So you basically have to double tap whatever button/area you want to activate, which I have not gotten used to yet. Based on my 10 years of experience with the G6, Garmin will provide many course updates, so I'm not worried about that aspect at all. ... show more

  • big numbers mode makes it easy to see distances for those of us with less ...
Style: GPS
Played my first round with the Approach G30 today. It started quickly and immediately recognized the course I was playing, but took 2-3 attempts to achieve a connection with the satellite, possibly due to the overcast and misty conditions. Took a few holes to become accustomed to how to properly navigate through all the options for scoring, putts, fairways hit and then advancing to the next hole. People with larger fingers will likely have a difficult time navigating through this device due to it's size, which is even smaller than I anticipated. My previous device was a SkyCaddie SGXw, which is noticeably larger than the G30 and a bit easier to navigate in my opinion. I decided to get rid of the SkyCaddie because of battery issues and the fact that it cost $50 per year to register to be able to use. The G30 has no yearly fees for usage and states it's pre-loaded with over 40,000 courses. Played 18 holes in approx. 3 hours and 30 minutes and still had 80% battery life remaining. The yardages appeared to be accurate, within 1-3 yards of my friends laser. Here are a list of the pros and cons. Pros: Starts quickly, noticed the course I was on quickly, yardages and hazards appeared to accurate, big numbers mode makes it easy to see distances for those of us with less then sterling eyesight, able to keep my score after a bit of trial and error, takes awhile to get used to it's smaller size, easy to view your stats via Garmin Connect, charges quickly, battery life appears to be excellent. Appears as though you could likely squeeze in 3 full rounds of use out of this device, if you're rounds don't take 5 hours each. Cons: Depending on the size of your hand and fingers, the small size could be an issue with being able to properly navigate the device, takes quite a few holes to feel your way through the device. Using the touch screen took quite awhile to adjust to, hitting the function you wanted didn't always work the first few times you attempted to use them. Overall I really enjoyed my first venture with the G30, my only wish is that this device be a bit larger in order to promote easier usage. I would recommend this device to most who enjoy a good golf GPS device, that's fairly easy to use and give you all the info and options for scoring stats, distances and hazards that you desire. UPDATE 4/3/17: Played my second round with this device, it again had trouble locating a satellite on the first attempt. After 6 holes it would no longer allow me to enter scores, putts, fairways hit/missed and a few other functions. It did continue to automatically recognize when I began playing another hole. It was quite frustrating not being able to enter my stats or even back out of the scorecard without having to hit the power button in an attempt to reset. Will contact Garmin Support, if they cannot fix remotely, I will be sending back this device. Very disappointed. UPDATE 4/12/17: Spoke with Garmin Support again on 4/11/17 and the tech states they have no ETA on the software update. I asked if Garmin would compensate me for lost usage, they state they do not do that. They suggested that I can purchase a G8 for an addition $100. I let the tech know that I already paid $250 for the G30 and the G8 is currently selling for less than $300 and why would I want to pay $50 more for a device that is retailing for much less, I received no explanation. To say I'm incredibly disappointed and upset with how Garmin has handled this issue would be an understatement. I had heard mostly positive reviews about Garmin's products and support, this issue makes me reconsider what I had read previously. ... show more

  • Expensive but great tool.
Style: GPS
We had the forerunner of this that lasted for years. The updated version is even better with a brighter active touch screen. Seems to be accurate. The only objection is its smaller in overall size than the last one. (Screen size is about the same as older one.) But it does fit in your pocket or on your belt if desired. Still a 5 star item. ... show more
