  • Garmin vs. Phone GPS
Size: 5 in. Style: With Lifetime Maps and Traffic Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
Why don't you just use your phone? Ask me blissful passengers in the back seat, oh so little do they know. As a driver by profession, currently working for 2 separate restaurants and doing delivery work daily, this unit has changed my life. In the past I relied on my phone, which would die all the time or could not stay on, showing me the vital map of the area. It would rely on 3G which was often faulty to say the least, wasting precious time as I waved it in the air like I "need an adult". Contributing to my frustration and stress which was already plentiful. With this device my job is made easy as I simply input ALL of the addresses in at the same time and look at the map to establish the best route. PROS: -Large clear 5" display -Free maps & traffic -Finds nearby businesses and restaurants -Extremely quick boot -Quality touchscreen and intuitive interface make input a breeze -Customization, Customization Customization. It's important -Loud & clear voice over -Speed limits shown + School zone warnings CONS: -Google maps still offers a slightly more polished search for specific places and businesses. -It would be nice if it was water sealed, for lack of better cons. If you're thinking of getting a GPS despite having a phone, chances are you need it. This one is a no brainer at this price, considering all the features provided. The only real downside being that google is unmatched at what they do, hence I sometimes use their search just to input the address into my Garmin warrior. Im so satisfied with the device that I bought another, for my father. This is the best GPS system I have had a pleasure of using not only for personal but also professional applications. ... show more

  • Solid GPS
Size: 5 in. Style: With Lifetime Maps and Traffic Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
This is a really nice GPS. I previously had one of the original Nuvi's from Garmin and liked it. I then bought the Garmin 52 and ended up having to return it because I didn't realize that GPS only provided "upcoming street" info and wouldn't tell you what road you were traveling on! A quick search on Garmin showed that the 52 series "is (part of) a list of devices that will show the cross streets instead of the street you are driving on, in the green information bar:" the 55 series " (is part of ) The following devices will show the cross street at the top of the map screen, and the current street at the bottom:" Having the current street at the bottom and the cross street at top is a GODSEND. It helps me so much at work. After doing much researching, I am having a hard time telling the difference between each year lineup of units. They all seem very similar, so I imagine they perform the same as well. The essential line devices are separated by size classes (5", 6",) Lifetime maps (LM) and traffic capability (T) and also what type of map package (Canada lower 49, etc.) I haven't been able to identify what processor and GPS tracking device they use...so if you are on a budget and don't care about Canada or having lifetime maps, you will likely see the same GPS tracking performance as all the other devices on the essential line. Lifetime maps however...is a very nice investment! Notes -Nice bright widescreen -GPS/Map system is solid and dependable -Garmin software is easy to use to update the device -Shows traveling road and upcoming cross street ... show more

  • Garmin NUvi 55LMT
Size: 5 in. Style: With Lifetime Maps and Traffic Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I have had Garmin, TomTom, Magellan and now back to Garmin. The Magellan 3045 was too slow to acquire a signal and would often continue with directions as though I had followed the given route, though I had not. Eventually it would straighten itself and locate where I was but not soon enough for my liking. I liked the Tom Tom until I did an upgrade. It never worked well after that and i lost the voice feature which is important to me. There was no viable solution and others were having the same problem. Since I paid extra to have the ability to update but had problems afterwards, I will not buy a TomTom again. The older Garmin that I have (in boyfriend's car now) has keys that often stick, especially in cold weather. Very frustrating;with this new Garmin I believe that will no longer be a problem. The voice instructions are fairly clear. Pronunciations can be off but one can get the gist. So far, with limited use, the Garmin nuvi 55 works pretty quickly and reroutes well. Though I wouldn't say the routes given are ones I would take in an area I know but they do get a person to the intended goal. Some POIs it does not find. I was testing with my local landfill the other day. It finds others but not the closest one for me. I had even typed in the name of the landfill. It did work with the address. I have not tested the traffic feature. Features that I don't like: 1) The chime that is triggered when nearing a school zone. Loud enuf, it makes me jump! I am unable to find a way to turn that feature off. I want the volume up to hear the directions but this chime just seems annoying. If any one knows how to disable that feature I would be grateful for a comment! I don't feel I need to be alerted to a school zone - I have eyes for that. 2) No external way to adjust the volume. The TomTom had that and I found it much easier to use and safer. 3) I can't find a way to make it beep before a turn. It definitely gives instructions early but then sometimes it is timely before a turn is needed, sometimes only right upon a turn. I had gotten use to the beep for verification with the Magellan. Again, if anyone knows how to have the Garmin 55 beep just before a turn, I would appreciate knowing how to set that. 4) Minor gripe: As another reviewer noted - there seems to be no way to clear one selection from the recent list. It's either clear all or none. I would have preferred to have the ability to clear one or two but not have to do all. 5) FYI: Car speed shown on the Garmin 55 is off by 4 mph from my car's speedometer. I am not using this gadget for my speed so doesn't matter much to me but might be good for someone else to know. Even with these gripes or preferences not found, I find this Garmin should be very useable(and hopefully reliable) for my purpose, therefore the 4 stars. Not my dream GPS unit but then none really seem to be. ... show more
