I'm happy to say that this chicken door works! Our chickens like to free-range while the weather is decent here in the Upper Midwest, but as we move into fall (with rapidly decreasing daylight hours), we aren't always home to close the chicken door before nightfall. We already lost a chicken to a predator a few weeks ago because of this issue. Enter the solar chicken door! It's been nice to have the peace of mind knowing that we don't have to rush home to get the chickens safely sequestered in their coop if they've been free-ranging, and we also have the advantage of letting them out into their attached run without having to go and physically open the coop door. It was really easy to install. Because we already had a coop door cut that was larger than this door, we just attached this solar door onto a piece of plywood and installed that over the existing hole. We did back off the screws a little after testing the door to allow it to slide easily up and down. For drawbacks, though, the door material seems pretty flimsy. It's light, which is nice, but I'm not sure how well it would do up against, say, a very determined raccoon. The other issue is that the solar strip is directly attached to the top of the door, so if you wanted to get the auto-sensor out of the shade for longer "open" times, you would only be able to do that if your coop door faced the sun. Overall, though, I'm quite happy with it, and what is probably more important, so are the chickens! ... show more

I got this for our main coop, to try out an auto closing feature. We lost the entire flock last year when coyotes got into the coop because we did not have a door on the coop house. I'm hoping this is strong enough to keep coyotes out but it may not be. However, our new hens have adjusted well to the schedule and it seems to work as expected. I do have chickens and I have multiple automatic doors for the chickens. This particular door I installed on the outside of an RV over a cat door because raccoons have figured out the cat door and like to go ransack the place at night. So, because I have another auto door that I can program what time the door opens and closes, I got this somewhat brilliant idea (if I do say so myself) to thwart the raccoons. This is an extremely simple door to install. I had to make a frame because the cat door sticks out a bit but all you need is a flat surface, room for the door to go up and just screw it in. It really is that simple. This particular door can be set to open and close with light, manually do it or set a timer to close it. And that is what I don't like. I thought (maybe because the other ones I have, have this option) that you could schedule the time for it to open and/or close. You cannot. And as far as I can tell, you have to set that timer every day. For the money, I don't feel this one is worth it when all the others in this price range usually have the time feature and/or a remote feature. This is a solid unit and will do the job hence the four stars, but it has very basic features. ... show more

I installed this on my coops inner door because our larger door out of the pen part of the coop is all mesh. It works great so far but I am worried as the days get shorter and we have more weather that the solar power will not be enough and my girls will get locked in or out of their warm house. Our coop is a wood+wire one so I just replaced the door with a piece of plywood and made a hole with the template provided. Which is a little small, the spur gear lifting the door was grinding against the wood so I made the opening a little bigger above the original hole. Seems my hens are ok with it. I just installed it so I haven’t seen yet the full cycle of open/close. I tested the force it takes to stop the door from closing to see what would happen if one was to be caught in between and it’s maybe a little strong… I would have like the door to go up again instead of just stopping if something is stuck in the opening but I understand that’s how the door knows it’s closed or open … Our coop door is not facing south so I’m hoping this battery will not need a lot of direct sun to recharge. I haven’t programmed the timer yet as days are getting shorter and shorter it seemed like a waste of time. Update 10/20/23: coop went up and down all night (i caught it on camera) and this morning i've got a solid green light and the coop is stuck open, none of the buttons seem to operate. Battery is reading a good voltage. I'm guessing water got in the unit and fried something... Support is very responsive. ... show more
