Description

Showcasing over 80 international artists who incorporate embroidery into their practice, this book provides a survey of embroidery in contemporary art, illustrating the huge range of ways in which the craft has been embraced as a form of creative expression. Some artists evoke a kind of nostalgia, rediscovering skills that have fallen from fashion or promoting the value of ancient handicrafts in an industrialized world of mass-production. Others push boundaries by using embroidery on photographs, poetic installations, embroidered reproductions of everyday objects, or by using it to tackle political, personal or transgressive themes. From Thread to Needle is a captivating exploration of their creative journeys, their influences, the technical challenges they face and the message they wish to convey. Read more

  • Visionary!
At age 74, not much surprises me. I’m a lifelong quilter and embroiderer who is open to new idea and fairly comfortable with my craft. BUT let me say, this book is a wonderment! First, it’s big so the illustrations do the works justice. Production value is excellent. The photos are either full page or for the rest, mostly 2 per page. It’s an oversized book, there’s plenty of room. Heavy, high quality paper and excellent photography which makes it as if you are holding the works in your hand. There’s plenty of information on the processes of each piece as well as details of each artists’ attitudes toward creating. The works themselves are startling, sometimes poignant, funny or endearing but often, very often, political. They are amazing examples of social commentary and incisive wit. These (mostly) women use a stereotypical skill to reveal deep issues faced by all of us. I am so grateful to them for employing the intricacies of needlework to convey their insights. This book could sit on your coffee table, but anyone who opens it will be catapulted into an amazing new world of passionate commentary. Kudos especially to the editor, Charlotte Vannier. I love it! ... show more
