  • 1HP measured, not 70dB, built well.
Set name: Hot dog (14pcs kits)
Reviewing FORNAX 8 gallon air compressor: An executive summary would be that this compressor measures a true 1Hp, is reasonably quiet but probably not 70dB, is built well, and is a good value once the accessories are factored in. A more detailed review: This compressor is an attractive size for lots of homeowner applications. It comes secured in a sturdy box with Styrofoam packing. The packing took a beating (picture) but the compressor was fine. The manual is heavy on safety warnings like they all are, but it does not mention you have to mount the wheels, foot, input filter, and output quick connect before using the compressor. That takes but a few minutes as long as you have metric wrenches handy. If you read the manual they outline a break in procedure where you run the compressor with the drain open for 30 minutes. I believe this is because oil-free compressor piston seals can take a bit of run time to seat themselves and doing it without pressure is desirable. While doing the break in run my compressor started making some odd noises near the pressure switch assembly. Once I could pressurize the tank the noise immediately went away. One thing I find odd about their product information is they state the input voltage and claimed horsepower but never mention ampere draw. With one horsepower equaling 746 watts and running off of 120V it should need 6.2 amps. Actually if it delivers 1 shaft horsepower allowing for a 90% efficient motor it should consume about 10% more so 6.8 amps would be about right. I plugged the compressor into a Kill a watt meter (from Amazon!) and observed a maximum current draw of 6.8 amperes at maximum pressure with 121 volts at the plug. This is an excellent result as it shows the vendor has not inflated their power claims! The manual also directs you to test the safety (over pressure protection) valve by pulling its ring, and you should. If you have ever heard one of these valves open you will know to wear hearing protection, they can be very loud! The air really rushes out so heed their warning and protect your face. They indicate the safety valve should reclose between 40 and 60 psi and my test reclosed around 55 psi. With the compressor running I did a sound pressure test at three feet and observed around 80dB with a cheap hand held meter set to A-Weighting slow response. Background noise with the compressor off measured 30dB. While they claim 70dB they don’t state the distance or weighting scale so I can’t make a direct comparison of their claim to my measurement. 80dB is quiet enough to live with but definitely noticeable. I’m dropping my rating to four stars because of the measured sound level. I don’t have a direct way to measure the 2.2 CFM claim but can offer the following: 1HP will yield a theoretical maximum of 4.1 CFM (never achieved, there are always losses), I measured around 1HP, and they claim 2.2 CFM which would be around 55% efficiency for the compressor. That is a fairly low efficiency which is to be expected with a high speed no oil compressor. It tells me two things: Their claim of 2.2 CFM is probably accurate, and, if you are going to use a whole lot of air you may want a more efficient compressor. This compressor is designed for light weight and low noise, not maximum efficiency. In conclusion, this compressor delivers the power and air that is claimed, may be a bit noisier than 70 dB, is built well, and with accessories is a decent value. It should give many years of quality service in homeowner applications. ... show more

  • Excellent air compressor
Set name: Hot dog
I have a large shop compressor, and a nice smaller pancake compressor. I was interested in this a a middle-sized compressor to do some painting projects beyond the capabilities of the small compressor. The oil-free compressor is great for running paint guns. I wanted to paint outside and thought the quiet running would be great. This is very quiet. This is much quieter than any compressor that I have used. The compressor is good quality and the air flow was very great. I cannot find any negatives other than, like most air compressors, this is very top heavy. I had it tip over a number of times wile using it. The tipping over is my only concern, where I could see breaking something when it tips unexpectedly. I am very happy with the performance of this, and think it is a good value for the money. ... show more
