I bought both the Flash Furniture Mid Back Black Mesh Chair and the SPACE Seating Professional Dark Air Grid Back w/ Black Eco Leather Seat. I needed two chairs for my home office as I often have clients over. At the time of this review, both of these chairs are number one sellers on Amazon in their respective categories. At my previous employment I had an Aeron chair and funny enough I actually like both of these as much if not more. The Aeron had better casters and quality of construction but I always found it kind of mushy, and I had to constantly re tighten the arm rests as they tended become loose from their settings after a couple of hours. Consensus: Pleasantly surprised by both of them and I’m giving them both 5 stars for value and comfort. Note, I’m only in my first week with both. - Ease of assembly – Assembled both chairs within 15 minutes. The SPACE was in particular really easy. Both have the identical number of bolts used in identical places (10 for each chair). The Flash had slightly weaker instructions but overall both were very easy to assemble. I particularly like the touch of the SPACE chair where they warned on the box “don’t use a knife here to open” which could have led to cutting some of the fabric with a large knife. - Comfort – I am 5’ 9” 220 lbs (body builder) and I found both chairs very comfortable. I prefer a firmer cushion and good back support - both were excellent. Same thing on leg height. I had no issues with long terms seating when with past chairs my legs and ass could go numb. I’m currently using the Flash more, but that is because if reading a book or gaming, it’s nice to be able to tilt back. The SPACE has better casters and is better for hardcore grinding away at work if you want a rigid back. I’ve noticed people complaining that the chairs don’t go down far enough. At my height no problem. Especially once I added blocks under my antique oak table lifting it up higher. Perfect ergonomic feel now compared to what I had before. - Quality – The SPACE (made in Taiwan) has better quality construction and materials than the Flash (made in China). Aesthetically I find the SPACE better looking, The Flash has some nasty silver flashing on it, cheaper plastic, and IMHO leaving the nasty dust guards off made it look much better. If I had to bet money on it I think the SPACE will outlast the Flash. The quality of the cushions on the SPACE also seem a bit higher than the Flash. - Value – For the comfort I have now, if these chairs last a couple of years it’s an outstanding value. I seriously considered getting another Aeron and I’m glad I didn’t. I’m part of a start up now and I’m getting 90% of the comfort from the Aeron for literally 1/7th the price from each of these chairs. AND I now have two chairs. Killer value. Overall: Depending on what you want from an office chair they’re both great. The Flash has the advantage of adjust-ability for different seating postures but the SPACE wins when it comes to old school, rigid back grind it out comfort – it just feels a little bit more stable. ... show more

Bought as damaged item. Love it, it's a keeper.

I'm that guy that looks around at office equipment at Amazon. If it's damaged or used but half-price or less, I buy it. Yes, I'm that guy. I did it again with this green chair and love it. Yes, it's got some scratches and small gouges in it, but similar to how I'd wear it out in a couple weeks. Like all new things, like all new guitars or electronics, the first gouge or injury I cause is disheartening and buying used or distressed has me avoid that first traumatic experience and also save over 50% in this case. It arrived boxed inside another box with no padding inside the outer box. The inner box wasn't sealed either - so it looks like Amazon just placed the damaged box inside another box then sent it off to me. It was Prime so it arrived fast. All the parts were there and all damage was minor and cosmetic - and what I signed up for when I ordered it used and cosmetically damaged. It certainly would have warranted a return had I bought it new, but it's a keeper if it works. It took about 15 minutes to put together. I couldn't figure out which armrest was left and which was right, so I just put them on and regularized I could switch them later if I wanted. The Allen key is included and is all that is needed to put this together. 6 screws total for the armrests, 4 for the mechanism that has all the controls on it, then everything else plugs in. Most of my time was spent staring at the instructions and trying to figure out what they meant. A 2nd chair would probably take me less than 5 minutes to put together, now that I know how to do it. It's quite easy and simple, but this is all in hindsight. If another chair goes down to 50% or more off the regular price due to damage, I'll be able to see if my statement is accurate because I'll order it. Happy camper here, if it breaks and seems unreasonably fragile, I'll post it here. But so far happy. Keep in mind, this is someone who paid less than 50% of the price and knowingly bought something cosmetically damaged. The price I pad for what I got, I got a better deal than anything I could get locally. The adjustable height on the arm rests seem to make a difference of almost $100 as anything I could get for around 20% more of what I paid, locally or on Amazon, has fixed or no arm rests. ... show more

Very ergonomic, highly adjustable, but rather difficult to assemble

There are many great features of this chair. The chair has a mesh back, much like the much more pricey and highly acclaimed Aeron Miller office chairs. The height of the chair back provides adequate lumbar support. Note that this is a "mid-back" chair rather than a "high-back chair," meaning the back of the chair does not extend as far as others do, such as this chair's rival, the Lorell Executive High-Back Chair. Despite this small limitation, the mesh back still contours nicely with the dip in the users' upper and lower spine, encouraging healthy posture. The seat pan is contoured to support one's legs and is comfortable enough for long-term use, but it is made of cloth rather than mesh in more high-end, but pricier chairs. The arm rests are height-adjustable by depressing small buttons on the side that allow them to move up and down freely. By positioning the arm rests at a height that matches the level of the desk's keyboard and mouse, one can protect against developing carpal tunnel syndrome. The horizontal extent of the arm rests is also adjustable, albeit at the time of assembly only, by positioning the arm rests before tightening the bolts and washers with the included Allen wrench. If only one person is the primary user of this chair, then this lack of flexibility is a non-issue. Speaking of assembly, this chair was one of the most difficult and frustrating chairs that I've assembled. Two of the included casters required an unusual amount of force to attach to the bottom plastic swivel-legged base of the chair. The arm rests were very difficult to assemble without a second person's help and dexterity. Lastly, the chair back attaches to the under-carriage assembly beneath the seat pan through a small loop, and a small spring-loaded plastic lock holds the chair back's arm in place in attachment with the seat pan. This lock has a wheel-shaped knob that must be turned counter-clockwise as far as possible with respect to the vantage point of the front of the chair. I found that I had to hold the other side of the spring-loaded plastic "bolt" in place with a pair of pliers to prevent it from also turning with the wheel. Furthermore, if the wheel has not been rotated all of the way counter-clockwise during assembly, then the chair back falls all the way down and is not able to hold its height. A surprisingly large amount of torque is required while turning the plastic knob to prevent this failure mode from occurring. The terse instruction manual did not clearly describe this process (neither in diagrams, nor in prose), and so having to discover all of these stipulations myself first-hand was pretty frustrating. Additionally, several of the threaded screw holes on the bottom of the chair base did not match the included screws as well as they could have, resulting in frustration. Some of this chair's materials/parts seem cheaply made (after all, for a value/bargain like this, one almost expects some cost-cutting to be made by the manufacturer). In particular, the casters, the bottom of the chair base, the sides of the arm rests, and the accordion-style pleated plastic conduit that wraps around the back metal arm connecting the chair back to the seat pan assembly all seem to be budget plastic parts. Meanwhile, the mesh chair back and the seat pan itself seem to be much higher-quality than expected. Unfortunately, to my dismay, many of the plastic parts arrived scuffed and scratched, almost as if parts of this chair were pre-owned by a previous buyer, returned, and inadequately "refurbished" before being sent out in a second (or third!) shipment. The noticeable wear-and-tear was very apparent during assembly. Perhaps I was unlucky and other chairs have shipped in much better condition than mine was in. While disappointed, I am willing to overlook these issues and retain ownership of this chair because of its superior ergonomics. Thankfully, assembly is a one-time process, and so frustrations encountered during chair construction can very easily be forgotten. Properly adjusting the chair is crucial; many problems with ergonomics such as back, neck, and wrist pain originate from improperly adjusted chairs. Thus, it is highly recommended that one adjusts the configuration of this chair to match their body shape and size. You have the ability to adjust the fore and aft pitch angle of the seat pan, along with the forward tilt of the mesh back using two levers. A third lever adjusts the height of the chair itself. Many similarly-priced and more expensive chairs do not have as many adjustments. When properly adjusted, this chair can support hours of comfortable, extended seated desk work without fatigue. Nonetheless, standing and walking breaks at a regular interval are still encouraged. Moreover, adjustments to the desk and repositioning computer peripherals are also encouraged. For example, ensure that the top of the monitor is positioned at eye level to encourage proper neck positioning. This chair has great value. It holds its ground, but still falls short of high-end chairs such as the Steelcase Leap (2) and the Herman Miller Aeron chairs. You can't expect any miracles at this price point, but this chair beats out many other chairs, including much more expensive options, especially if you value ergonomics over style/appearance and "perceived" but unhealthy comfort in the form of softness and excessive form-fitting that encourages your spine to take on a strained, harmful position for extended use. As a small but significant upgrade, consider the aforementioned Lorell chair which is just slightly pricier, but far easier to assemble and supports the full height of the user's back, especially for taller desk workers. Nonetheless, the seat pan on this chair ever-so-slightly edges out that of the Lorell chair in terms of comfort and form-fitting shape. At six feet in height and an owner of both highly-esteemed chairs, I feel that the chair back is tall enough to support my entire back; however, my experience is just one data point. For one thing, I was able to adjust this chair to perfectly match my desk and my body shape/size, and as someone who has developed spinal kyphosis from extended occupational computer use, I can tell you that this chair is perfectly suited for long-duration computer work. ... show more

Sturdy for WFH

I've had this chair for a year. I got it mid-pandemic for $130. I think it's a reasonable value. The seat is soft and well-cushioned. I wish it was almost a little longer for more thigh support, but I'm a big person and it fits me pretty well other than that. I use this chair daily while working from home. Overall, it's held up well, with the exception of one of the armrests. After about 9 months, the rubber material covering has torn on the bottom edge and on the top. The tears are about an inch long each. The armrest still works fine and hasn't lost any foam, but I could see that happening if I don't find a way to tape/cover the tear. The chair is comfortable, and there are several kinds of adjustments available. It's also very sturdy, both the chair and the armrests. When the chair arrived, the hydraulic lift had expanded and punched through the box it shipped in. I haven't had any issues with it and just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Assembly was mostly easy and the instructions made sense. My biggest problem with the chair was when I attached the chair to the part with the levers. The placement of the levers and a bump of plastic as well as the slots for the screws made it hard to get in with the Allen key to tighten them down. I think some of the holes weren't tapped straight and were slightly misaligned, which also made it harder to screw in the bolts. The chair starts to squeak when I lean back every couple of months, so I just flip it over, tighten those bolts, and it's quiet for another couple of months. Other than the armrest tears, which you really only see when you're looking right at them, the chair doesn't look worn at all. Backrest mechanism flimsy, completely broken 2 years in.

This chair was great and supportive… until the backrest adjustment knob broke about 2 years in. I didn’t do anything to it in particular—I was just tightening it one day and it never stopped spinning, as if it was stripped. Now the backrest has slid all the way into the lowest position so i have no lumbar support. Really disappointed after I did a lot of research before choosing this chair, and for furniture of this price meant to be used every day, I want it to last more than 2 years instead of just becoming another huge hunk of plastic in a landfill. ... show more

Wonderful Chair. Best Personal PC Investment All Year!

For the price you cannot beat this chair. I've had the same office chair that I bought from Wal-Mart over 6 years ago, and it got so flat it really hurt to sit in for more than an hour. After upgrading my personal PC and getting into some longer gaming sessions, I knew I needed something that A) wasn't fake leather and B) had all of the support and adjustments I needed to personalize my sitting posture. This chair delivered on all accounts. The breathable mesh on the seat is thick, retains its shape, and the back is comfy yet durable. It was simple to put together, the rollers are high quality, and the adjustments are all strong and hold well. I can game for hours in comfort without having any pain in my legs or rear. The only gripe, and it's a small one, is the armrests are very hard. They work great for mouse/keyboard, but extended typing or using a gamepad and resting our arms against them at an agle really hurts your elbows after a while. I don't expect soft, padded armrests but that's just something to be aware of if you're buying it to game or you type a lot. I will buy this chair again when/if the first one wears out. *UPDATE 12/17/2015 - I still really like this chair, but the armrests have become the worst I have ever used. They're FAR too tall and can't be adjusted down far enough. After I have played Fallout 4 a few nights with an Xbox One gamepad, my shoulder is sore and my elbows are hurting. I ended up just taking them off and it works out, but I can see why more popular "gaming" chairs have armrests that adjust far lower or fold away. I'd still recommend this chair to anyone who works in an office, but for gaming use...probably not the best choice. ... show more

I have tried three other office chairs. I got this today and it took 10 minutes to assemble. The material is high quality. I'm 5'9" 270 and this thing is a rock. The backrest tilting and locking mechanism is solid, sturdy and able to be locked at any angle within the advertised range. No 3 position holes to lock a sliding pin in. Not only does the back rest tilt and lock, but the seat cushion also has the ability to tilt and lock at any point in it's range. The arm rests heights are adjustable, with three different locking heights. They are not able to be locked at any height in the range. The backrest height is also fully adjustable. The only wish list item is for padding. It's a comfortable mesh chair but to get the features in a plush "big boy" chair was not something I was willing to spend the amount of money required to get. A simple chair pillow/cushion will solve that problem. I bought a set of casters for hardwood flooring, but the ones that came with it are excellent. The gas cylinder is great, usually when I want to lower a chair with the lever release, I always push it and I instantly drop to the low point. Then have to stand up and manipulate it to where i want it by slowly lowering my body into the chair after I return it to it's highest position and locking it when it's where I want it. Not this one. I applied moderate pressure and it started slowly lowering allowing me to stop it where I wanted it. Just buy it, especially if it is still on sale for $165. Normal says $299. Good chair for the price and color.

This chair was quite easy to assemble, however, you need to know how wide you want to set the armrests before tightening them down. I'd suggest just making them as wide as possible since they don't go THAT wide in the first place. The height specifications say that the chair goes up to a certain height, however, once you account for the spring/piston action or whatever, it's not actually that high. I needed a chair to replace a very uncomfortable stool. I chose this one because it was one of few actually-comfy-looking ones that said it'd go to the height I needed. When I assembled, put it all the way up, it was high enough. However, when I sat down, it sank a couple inches. My arms sit a little awkwardly on my desk now, but it's not a huge problem to deal with. Things that are a little annoying: 1. The chair feels as though the seat is tilted slightly forward, so if I'm wearing slippy pants, it constantly feels like I'm going to slip out of it. The chair back adjusts, but the seat does not lean back with it. You have one level of seat chair, and it feels like it could be angled back more. I hated it at first, but I've gotten used to it because I put my feet up on a little shelf or on the wheel spoke thingies of the chair. If my feet were hanging off and touching the ground, I'd absolutely return because it'd feel like I was slipping out of the chair all the time. 2. It is squeaking already. I've used it for probably 10 days. 3. The wheels aren't smoothly rolling under my weight. But I am a little heftier than the average human. That's probably just a me thing. Overall would recommend if you don't need it for a higher desk/table. Color is bright and vibrant. Cushion and lumbar support back are quite comfortable.
