  • Trying to remain optimistic... - Update #2 is more positive
My all new 8" Fire HD w 64gb storage arrived today. Joy! Went through the setup process... good, good. Then, I hooked it up to my PC via the provided SUB to load my non-amazon purchased library and find that there are no visible subfolders to transfer my collection of ebooks to. What gives? Did amazon go full on proprietary on us with this latest generation? One star until we get this sorted out... Will update the review if there's a solution. If no solution, it will be returned. ***update #1*** There's apparently no simple solution. Anmolpreet, the customer service guy, was trying to walk me through some complicated email method that was highly impractical. Why does amazon feel the need to take a simple data transfer by USB method and remove it? What a terrible design flaw! Why does amazon hate their customers? This is right up there with not being able to open .mobi files from the micro SD card with the kindle app. I've learned to live with that flaw, but this one is ridiculous. Stay away from this lump. ***update #2*** amazon's Seattle based customer service contacted me and provided a workaround. You can select the functional properties of the USB cord. It can be used both to transfer data and charge the device. Unfortunately, amazon's incomplete instructions provided with the tablet do not provide this level of information. Work on it and make sure your overseas tech support guys know how to fully assist a customer with the proper countermeasures. Adding another star to the review to bump it up to 2. Hopefully, there aren't any other problems. ... show more

  • for the most part I like it......but....
Bought this so I could more easily SEE PDF documents & read books via the Kindle app. Okay, GREAT I can! The ISSUE?? I can Bluetooth PDF patterns (I use for crochet & knitting) over to the the tablet only to find that I can NOT move them to the SD card I've got mounted in it. I want the SD card as the main storage for these. WHY would I want to store them ON the tablet & have it eat up the memory there?? Makes no sense. I've not found ANY WHERE in the settings where I can designate the SD as primary storage OR a "Select all (or even a single item for that matter) & move" then get to choose where I want them moved to! My choices for moving them? Send to Kindle, Cloud Drive & Local Storage (Local storage is where they already are & THAT happens to be internal storage, not the SD card). *sigh*. Every other electronic device I've owned that permits you to have a mounted SD card gives you the opportunity to choose it as the place to store pictures (as in: Take a photo & it gets stored right away on the sd card), apps, & music when you add them. This device does not! That is an EPIC fail in product design! I've looked online for help with this issue. Everyone says that there should be the option to designate the SD card as primary storage. I am guessing either that is for the larger Fire Tablet, or maybe OLDER versions? This one however (as you can see by the photo I took) doesn't have that as an option! Amazon, this is a total fail! I paid a pretty penny for the device for a specific need: To be able to use it to SEE PDF's of crafting patterns & to read my Kindle books. I can't read the PDF's if they can't be stored on the SD card because the Tablet doesn't have enough storage for them (which is why I paid EXTRA for a very large, 125 gb SD card). Please advise! Is there an update that will fix this issue? Is there some drop down that I've managed to miss? A simple solution would be great. In case there isn't & someone else is wanting to do the same thing as me in purchasing this, DON'T! Find one that WILL permit you to move your files to the SD & have that as our primary storage! Save yourself the frustration! IF you are wanting this just for reading & surfing the net? Then guess what? It's PERFECT & FOR THAT I WOULD recommend it only! ... show more

  • HUGE disappointment
I purchased this as a replacement for my previous Fire 8 that suddenly died. I purposely bought the same size so I could use the same case I purchased for the earlier model, since I like the case and it's in great shape. UNFORTUNATELY, not only is this new Kindle a different size, the charging port and buttons are in different places, making my perfectly good case useless for anything now. Then, to add insult to injury, the charging port now uses a different style of cord, also making the braided cords I specifically purchased completely useless. I was ripped off. ... show more

  • No mirroring!
What is the point of having Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire Tablet if they don't talk to each other? It is not possible to mirror Tablet on TV. If Amazon is not updating neither systems you should at least create an App, otherwise people will just change their platform choice to Google. Chromecast mirrors devices perfectly. ... show more

  • Had to return two (2) of these and the last for a refund.
The first unit that I received was extremely unstable, shutting down in mid-read or mid-game for no apparent reason and unresponsive to the ON/OFF switch to resume. I went through the tech review process and arranged an exchange of the product for a replacement. The replacement arrived quickly and I proceeded to set it up; I added no secondary apps, using only those provided and disabling Alexa. The second unit was no more stable than was the first one. I have returned both now and continue with the reliable stability of my HD-8 8th Generation. I'll perhaps purchase a newer version when they manage to correct whatever fault is in this one. At some point in using the device, it seems to me that mention was made of avoiding some area near the display-side camera lens as the screen may go blank. It was displayed momentarily and I was not able to find any reference to this online or on the tablet, so that may be the difficulty; I don't intend to find out. Customer service was helpful, though it took a while for responses to come initially; perhaps I hadn't the patience to wait for the tech to read up on the problem. It was resolved professionally and properly. I'm only sorry that the device was an apparent pos; I've owned Kindle readers since the very first ones and liked all but this one. ... show more
