I read several reviews before purchasing this unit. Pro's: -Nice sized unit for a 3 or 5 gallon waterer. You could easily fit a larger waterer on here too (but I can't lift it filled with water!!), probably a good 18" in diameter). This is a "pro" for me, but as one reviewer mentioned, it may make this unit too big for those with a small coop. -Solid base keeps the unit stable on the coop floor -Good height helps keep pine shavings/litter out of the water (although I do have mine sitting on pavers for added height and security) -Units thermostat seems to work very well, keeps the water lukewarm into the low 20's (I haven't had a chance to test it at colder temp's yet). Con's - The unit seems to get almost a little too hot, I would still order it and it's not enough of a concern to reduce the star rating, just an observation. - Cord could be longer and it would be nice if they included something to put around the cord to protect it from the inevitable pecking. An easy fix with a trip to the hardware store. Additional detail: When I received the box, I plugged in the unit inside to ensure the temperature gauge was working (shouldn't kick on until the temperature is 35 degrees or colder). I also put this outside (in a dry location) when it was just over 35 degrees and again when it was in the 20's to see how hot the unit gets. The temperature sensor seems to work really well, but the unit gets much hotter than I expected from reading other reviews. I don't think it's hot enough to allow anything to catch on fire; it is too hot to touch comfortably but not hot enough to burn my skin. I would not recommend using this with a plastic waterer, it may be ok, but it wasn't worth the risk to me. The cord is made from a very thick sturdy rubber; that being said, I would recommend running to the hardware store to add something around it - you could even slice an old hose and slip the cord in that. June 2014 edit - Just a quick update to say that this is still working like a champ and made it through another winter. Very durable! If and when it ever goes, we will be replacing it with the same thing. As a side note, we never did wind up adding a hose around the cord and the chickens have left it alone for 2 full seasons now.

I ordered two of these, one for a covered outside chicken run water font and one for an enclosed chicken coop. The outside unit did not work at all when the outside temp went down to 28 degrees overnight and up to about 32 degrees the next morning. The inside one did work and heated the water to about 45-50 degrees. I called Farm Innovators and the representative said that I should put the entire unit in the freezer unplugged for about an hour to re-calibrate the thermostat. My freezer is set at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. After an hour, I took it out and it worked. Temp went up to about 195-200 degrees in the center and turned off after the unit began to thaw to room temp. So I will put it back out in the chicken run and see what happens tonight. Hopefully, this will be a fix and it will work. Before you send yours back, try this if you can. Edit: I put the heater back in the run last night and this morning when I woke up The temperature outside was 27°F and the water was heated to a perfect 50°. For now I have to say I do endorse this product. The only question remaining is longevity. I am going to raise from three stars to four stars. I did take off two stars because the device is too cheaply made (in China). There is no way this thing is worth about $50. At the very least it should have an adjustable thermostat like the one in your car or house and it should be sealed better so that it can be used out side safely, especially since it is designed to be used under about 5 gallons of water and for livestock which will spill and drip water on it at some point. It is a good gadget if you don't want to run out with hot water to your chicken coop several times a day or if you leave your chickens overnight or for a couple of days and can not put hot water in their water font. I would rather pay a bit more and get a better designed and more durable water heater or at least have a choice to pay for added functions if they were available. The problem is that this seems to be the only one of it's type out there. It is packaged by several different manufacturers but they all look exactly the same, so I think they must all be made by one company and distributed by many other sellers. And they are all made in China. I would even pay extra to get an American made one.

This heater base works perfectly as it should. No more frozen poultry water. Used a 2gal. Chicken waterer full of water at 20 degrees F. no water froze. Great product!

So I use the little cups (also amazon) because i refuse to clean their water out four times a day. I bought this heating base because it was big enough to also go under the little cups. Game changer. I have five chickies and i refill their five gallon bucket once every week or so. A few things: I neverrrr let it go empty cause im a little afraid of over-heating plastic if its not half full at least. And i haddd to poke tiny holes in the lid for condensation pressure release. Also, it really does turn itself off when its warm enough outside and then turn back on when its cold. All in all, bangin heating base. Zero issues.

I bought this because I am chronically ill and cannot be lugging water through the snow to my coop. However, it does not work. It never heats up. I had contacted the company about this and they said I had to do a the "freezer test". So I did and it did not heat up. They then told me to return it to them, at my expense, for a replacement. So I did, which was a huge pain in the butt for me to do. After a couple of weeks I got a box from them that looked suspiciously like the box I had returned. I was right. Farm Innovators so kindly sent me my broken heater back with a note telling me there is nothing wrong with it. So I thought ok I will try it again and I put it back in my coop. Well, it is 22 degrees out this morning inside the coop and this heater is cold as the snow outside. So now, I am out the price of the heater as well as the price of the shipping to return it to them and I will have to pay to purchase something from another company. I am sorry to say that dealing with Farm Innovators has been a very bad experience for me and I cannot recommend this product or this company to anyone. It takes me a long time to save up the money to get the things I need, as I cannot work, and now to be out this amount of money and still have no heater is a financial hardship for me. I have to start saving all over again and hope that the next heater I purchase will actually work. In the meantime, I hope I do not get injured dragging water from my kitchen to my coop.

I bought two of these heaters. One for my chickens and one for my turkey’s. I am happy to share my experience with you. They have been working very well for the last two weeks since I got them. We have been having below freezing weather for about 5 weeks or so. Prior to using these I was having to take fresh water out every morning and battle frozen buckets of water We live north of the Spokane area and temperatures are staying below freezing and so far I have only had one morning that the water was freezing and the temperature was down to -3 degrees Fahrenheit which was last night 12/31/21 I also have them sitting on cinder blocks to keep them up off the ground , don’t know if it helps or not but it’s keeping water away from the bottom of the unit . Also the unit is covered on the bottom which I think is a bonus over all very satisfied with my purchase
