Description

Once Considered a Lost Classic of the Silent Film Era. Now Available as a Blu-Ray with 4K Restoration and a Bonus standard DVD!Based on the ''adult fairy tale'' by George Sand, Fanchon the Cricket stars Mary Pickford as the title character, a strong-willed waif ostracized by ''acceptable society'' until she shows them the power of love and understanding.Directed by James Kirkwood and boasting exquisite cinematography by Edward Wynard, Fanchon the Cricket was filmed on location in Delaware Gap, Pennsylvania.A natural, sensual and uninhibited Pickford breaks through today's stereotype of her as '''the girl with the curls.'' It is also the only surviving film in which both Jack and Lottie Pickford appear with their sister. Once believed to be a lost film, Fanchon the Cricket's restoration is the result of a unique international collaboration between the Mary Pickford Foundation, the Cinematheque Francaise and the British Film Institute. A new negative and 35mm prints were created from the restored digital version, and the Mary Pickford Foundation paired the film with a new, original score by Julian Ducatenzeiler and Andy Gladbach.Bonus Materials:New, original score by Julian Ducatenzeiler and Andy Gladbach. Souvenir booklet featuring rare photographs and essays by Cari Beauchamp Review 'There was never a Fanchon like Mary Pickford. Yes, I know that the greatest of the French and the English and the American stars have attempted and have successfully rendered Fanchon, but I stick to my belief that none ever surpassed and few ever approached the work of Mary Pickford.' —Moving Picture World, May 22, 1915 'Pickford plays the role not so much as a woodland nymph, but more as a rural hooligan... She is extraordinarily beautiful; the first close-up of her face among the glistening leaves comes as an almost physical shock.' —Kevin Brownlow, Mary Pickford Rediscovered, May 1, 1999

  • Outstanding FLICKER ALLEY release
Outstanding FLICKER ALLEY release featuring the once lost FANCHON the CRICKET (1915) starring the lovely and vibrant Miss Mary Pickford at the age of just 23. We need more releases like this one and major kudos to FLICKER ALLEY for releasing this film alongside LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY (1920) also starring Mary Pickford. We need more Pickford films restored and mastered in HD, even if released in limited pressings at a higher premium as I'm positive the silent film and Pickford fans will quickly come out of the woodwork and buy up these editions. ... show more

  • MUCH LOVE...AND A LITTLE HATE
Wonderful movie, beautiful restoration, and a Musical Score that detracted from the experience in every way. Turned the sound off and all was well. Come on Mary Pickford Foundation. Really!!

  • Melt your heart
This silent movie. Is a beautiful story of a young girl falling in love . Coming of age story. Still relevant today. A new sound track adds emotion to scenes. I would recommend.

I loved the acting, the backgrounds, and the film restoration! What a gem!

  • Yes! Thank you Mary Pickford Foundation and Flicker Alley!
I have the Flicker Alley release, not the VCI media release (Amazon merged the reviews). The Flicker Alley version is a wonderful release. It is a must buy for any silent film fan! It is now out of print. So, buy your copy before they become insanely expensive. I already had to fork out eighty-five bucks for my copy. They are sure to get even more expensive as time goes on. I can’t wait for more Mary Pickford Foundation releases! ... show more

  • Great movie, excellent print. Lousy music
Loved everything about this movie except for the music. Did not fit with the times and is was monotonous and looping. Turn the sound off and put on your won records.

  • A lost classic magically reappears!
Loads od fun, Pickford is hilarious! Jack Standing is reminiscent of Brent Spiner, and turns in a creditable performance. The music is poorly conceived and anachronistic. Turn it down and enjoy this classic.
