I’m a complete novice birder. These binoculars were much cheaper than others I looked at and they meet my needs well. The case is not very useful for carrying the binoculars and they are a little heavy, but I don’t have a lot of experience with other binoculars to put this in perspective. I would say that if you have a small face or eyes that are close together these might not work. I can just barely get a single view by bringing the two lenses as close together as they will go. My pupillary distance is about 54mm. They would definitely not be usable for a child. ... show more

OK, these aren't like the big names and aren't quite as bright. However, these aren't toys either. I have some Bushnells of a much higher price and these not only match the quality of image but exceed it. The image is bright, sharp, and well saturated with color and feel rugged enough to handle day trips in the woods. They feature BAK 4 prisms that are phase coated (a feature on binoculars that are hard to find at double the price) and lenses that are fully multi-coated. No its not a Swarovoski, Zeiss, or Steiner but it isn't $2000.00 plus either. But you do get more than you pay for here. Much more. ... show more

    • Had trouble aligning my eyes to the lenses

I love these with one important caveat. The lenses are superb, and when all is in focus and aligned and the lens caps have not accidentally closed off one eye, they are 5 stars and more. However, I use them for bird watching, so getting them trained on target quickly is very important. One second can be the difference between figuring out which warbler it is and wondering where it flew off to. Two things about these binocs make this tough. First, they have the attached lens caps, which can unintentionally and randomly flop into place and make one eye dark. Second, and more often, if they are not adjusted to the perfect width, within a millimeter or two. then you will only be looking through one eye. I wish I could say that you could set the width and lock it, but you can't. So the odds of having one or both of these issues when you raise your binocs at the crucial moment are higher than I prefer. I have taken steps to avoid these two issues, and that is working well, so I do really like them. But I wish I didn't have to be so careful. Hence the 4 stars. I don't know what makes some binocs more forgiving than others in aligning to eyes, but I suspect it has to do with size of optics. That would mean a design tradeoff for weight vs ease of use. When they arrived, I was afraid they would be too bulky and heavy. But they are neither. The directions taught me how to look through binoculars. They bring the birds so close, The clarity is amazing. The 8-42 is perfect for me. I love them! I am a 70 y/o female.
