  • $600 BINOCULARS IN DISGUISE
Size: 10X42
In the last five years, despite the fact that I take very good care of my equipment, I have had three pairs of the $100-$150 binoculars break and none of them were covered by warranty. I am not an optics connoisseur but was hoping that, if I stepped up to $500-$700 range I would be able to get a more durable and reliable set of binoculars with a strong honest warranty. I went to Cabelas and Scheels and looked at Nikon 7, Vortex Viper HD, Zeiss Conquest, Cabelas HD, and Bushnell Legend binoculars. While they all seemed to be nice binoculars, I may have expected a little to much from the Zeiss since they were $1000 and I could not tell any difference between them the Vortex or the Nikons. Also the Vortex had a great no fault lifetime warranty. In the past I've had some negative experiences with Nikon and their warranties, even though the salesman said that Nikon has improved their warranty to compete with companies like Vortex I decided to give them a pass. I ended up going home to research the Viper HD and in the process found reviews on Maven optics. I read some reviews and watched Youtube videos and decided to order the 10x42 C.1 and return them if I didn't like them. Once I got them, I went back to Cabelas and asked if I could see how much better the Vortex Viper HD was in comparison. The Vortex did have a locking diopter ring which I liked, but otherwise could see absolutely no difference. Maven also offers the same type of no fault lifetime warranty that Vortex offers. I purchased these Maven binoculars during a holiday sale and paid $297 and the Vortex were $600 so I decided the locking diopter ring was not worth $300 and ended up keeping the Maven C.1. I am amazed with these binoculars and a little disappointed I waited so long to get a quality set of binoculars. I wish there was a way to show what I see through these binos. They are very crisp and clear. When looking at pine boughs, I am able to see individual pine needles. I wear glasses and the eye relief allows a full field of view with no black edges. In low light (legal shooting light) they work very well. I do have a pair of old, heavy Minolta porro prism 50mm that may be brighter but the clarity of the Mavens makes up for any advantage the Minoltas might have. The overall build seems to be very strong and the diopter ring is stiff enough so that once I got it adjusted, I haven't had to touch it. I was a little concerned the 10 power might be too strong for woods use but the close focus, adequate field of view, and great resolution make these a perfect all around binocular for me. Finally, these binoculars weigh 24.5oz and some people might find these 10 power binoculars a little light and have difficulty holding them steady. In that case, he or she may prefer the 8x42 model. Either way, if you want $325-$350 binoculars that are comparable to $500-$700 binoculars I highly recommend the Maven C.1. When it comes to high quality optics that the average person can afford, Maven changed the game. ... show more

  • Really nice quality at a good price point
Size: 10X42
I have used several brands of binoculars over the years. From cheaper brands like Bushnell to more expensive brands like Zeiss and everything in between. For the last few years I have been using a pair of Vortex which I really like but they are 8x42 magnification and I wanted something a little more powerful. I started shopping for 10x42 pair and a friend of mine who is a wildlife biologist in West Texas told me about Maven optics. He said that is all his department uses. As a result I took a chance on these. They are beautiful optics in appearance. Everything about them seems well done, from the polymer frame to the neck strap it is all very high quality. . . and this is not even Maven's top of the line model. They have a nice weight to them meaning they feel sturdy and well built, without being too heavy around your neck. The ED glass is crystal clear all the way to the edges. I can get on the deer stand in the middle of the night and still see my feeder with these with just minimal moon light. I can't speak to how waterproof they are as I hunt inside of a blind and they don't get exposed to the elements too much. The only thing that would have made the purchase better was if Maven provided a hard case vs. the soft bag but other than that these are awesome, I would buy them again. I attached an un-boxing video in case you are interested in what the item will look like when you get it in, hope this review helped you out. ... show more

  • Excellent quality for a low price!
Size: 10X42
I have used a pair of excellent Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA binoculars on natural history-related trips all over the world since the early 1990's. However, they are very heavy (890g) so on outings where I think I won't be seeing anything very exciting I usually leave them behind - and sometimes regret it! After a gruelling 2 hour walk up steep hills through hot, humid rainforest, to see Wilson's Bird of Paradise on a recent trip to the Raja Ampat Islands in Indonesia, I decided I must try to find a lighter pair of bins. I actually already have a much lighter pair (300g) of Nikon HG L DCF 10x25 (=Premier LX L), but they are ironically TOO light and I can't hold them steady enough.. Anyway, when I got back to the UK I did a lot of research on the Web. I was looking for a relatively inexpensive and light pair with great optical quality, and in the end I purchased the Maven C1 10x42 as they had excellent reviews and weigh almost 200g less than my Leicas. I have now compared them to my Leicas, and to my eyes their sharpness and ability to resolve detail in low light are indistinguishable. The Maven's FOV is less, but the close focusing distance is much better. Their weight is just right for me to be able to hold them pretty steady. And not only are they very, very good value given their optical quality and durable build, but they have a phenomenal lifetime no-fault warranty. Because of their unusual business model of selling direct to the customer, Maven binoculars are about 50% the cost of what you would be charged for the same item in a shop. I ordered my pair from Maven in the USA via Amazon and received them in the UK only 6 days later. I will certainly be taking them on my next trip and leaving my Leicas behind… ... show more

  • Outstanding optics in a plain and simple package.
Size: 10X42
I have owned and looked through literally hundreds of binoculars in the past 30 years. I'm a bit of an optics junkie, so when I read about a sub-$300 binocular with alpha-class optics, naturally my interest is piqued. I ordered a pair of Maven 10x42 C1's and they arrived about a week later. Here are my impressions: Packaging (box, case/bag, lens covers and the binoculars themselves) is middle-of-the-road average for binoculars today. Honestly, these could say "Simmons" or "Bushnell" on the side and I wouldn't be surprised. Having said that, we shouldn't be buying binoculars for how they look but for what we see through them, right? In that department, these are as close to Alpha-class binocs as I've ever seen for anything under $700, much less under $300. Obviously Maven put all the money where it mattered - into the optics and not fancy styling, rubber armoring, or fancy cases and boxes that you aren't going to use anyway. And I commend them for this because more companies should do this. Focus on the product and not the incidentals. To make an old ad reference, these are like the Xterra of binoculars - everything you need and nothing you don't. Just a spectacular image with no extra size or weight and no bells and whistles. I would have given then five stars but the diopter adjustment ring on my pair had some slop in it. It worked fine eventually, but you had to turn it past the point of correction to move the optic. I don't move my diopter ring once it's set, so it's not an issue on a daily basis, but this is poor QC in my opinion. But otherwise everything about these is average or above average for any binocular under $500 that I've handled, and that's a lot of pairs of binoculars. I don't think you can get a better image for under $700-1000. Edge to edge sharpness is superb. Color is very neutral. Depth of field is superb. If it's a great view you want, and aren't worried about making a fashion statement or impressing the local Audubon group, then these are your best choice. ... show more

  • Punches WELL Above its Price Point
Size: 10X42
This pair of binoculars is MIND BLOWING. I purchased them kindof on a whim as my other pair of binos broke in the middle of the hunting season. I had heard great things about Maven and had always been interested, so I figured I would take the plunge. I was not prepared for the performance! I'm young and have slowly been getting into higher end gear, but the binos I had were a sub $150 pair. These are not a ton more expensive at $350, but they are substantially nicer. Because of their business model and sales structure, there's no retail markup in the price of any Maven products. Amazon is only the shipper, you still purchase these directly from the manufacturer. Because of that, these binoculars compete directly with optics that retail in store for between $600 and $900. I have spent several days testing them Elk hunting in Utah, morning, mid day, and evening, and I the color contrast and performance in low and high light rivals anything I've looked through, except the high end Swarovskis. The real eye opener was on a Saturday mid-day, when I ran into town to Sportsman's Warehouse to grab something and decided to compare my C1's to a pair of Vortex Razor HD's, UHD's, and Swarovski EL's. While the C1's were behind the Swaros, the Swaros were only marginally better. And they retail for almost 10 TIMES what I paid for the C1's! And compared to the Vortex's, it was no contest. Maven mopped the floor with the Vortex's. These made the Razor's look like a cheap wal-mart pair, and they are obviously made with a much higher attention to detail and with better components. And again, the Maven's cost about 1/4 of what the Vortex's retail for! I will be buying more of these as gifts and such, I'm impressed! Don't hesitate if you're on the fence, throw away your Vortex and get yourself some Maven's! ... show more

  • Stellar image quality
Size: 10X42
These are very good binoculars. They are very clear, the edges get a little soft, but not bad. Colors come through very true, they have a good image in all light conditions, and the build quality feels pretty solid. I compared them pretty extensively against the Nikon Monarch 5 and the Meopta Optika. Really they are all nearly equal, and there was nothing I could see with one pair that I couldn’t with another. The Monarchs were my least favorite, though that had more to do with the feel of them. The optical quality was very good, but it wasn’t to my eyes any better than the others, and they have the narrowest field of view of the three. I liked the build quality and especially the eye cups of the Optikas, and really wanted to like them more than the Mavens because of this. They did have a bit of a halo effect in some light, where the outside edge seemed a little brighter and a little fuzzy compared to the center. In the end, the Mavens had a little bit of an edge in image quality, mostly in the overall hue of the image, to my eyes. The Nikons had a bit of a yellowish tint to everything, which wasn’t bad, but was noticeable. The Meoptas has a bit of a yellowish tint too, but a little darker and more noticeable. This was more apparent in bright light, and in low light it was much less noticeable. Colors still came through clear with both, but it bothered me a little compared to the C1’s. The Mavens didn’t seem to have any tint at all, the image is just like looking with my naked eyes, only bigger. Very impressive. Overall I think the Mavens were the best of the three I tested and am very happy to have them. ... show more

Impressed by the excellent quality for the price but blow away by the customer service! Had an issue with my 10x42 binoculars and it was resolved with the best service I’ve seen in a long while. Thank you, Maven!

  • MAVEN C1 10x42 - Review and comparison with MEOPTA Meopro 10x42 HD
Size: 10X42
Clear glass edge to edge, easy to get focused on, just the right weight, body is easily gripped without the sticky rubbery feel. Other than the optical properties, I like the gray color of the Maven, it stands out from other binoculars with their usual green or blacks. The field of view at 314ft is reasonable for the price compared to NIKON Monarch 5 at 288ft, NIKON Prostaff 7s at 325ft, NIKON Monarch 7 at 351ft, MEOPTA Optica at 315ft and MEOPTA Meopro at 351ft. The MAVEN C1 10x42 I received is marked Japan, other units I have seen purchased by friends are marked Philippines. ========================================================================== Comparison between MEOPTA MeoPro 10x42 HD and MAVEN C1 10x42 ED: MEOPTA MeoPro Positives: 1. Clear and brighter glass. It is hard to quantify these parameter without comparing them to another binocular of similar class and price range, so I chose the MAVEN C1 10x42 ED to compare the MEOPTA with and I can say that the MEOPTA has a slight edge on the Maven. 2. Field of view is a bit wider than the MAVEN. 3. Body hinge is tight enough to hold its position, same tightness as the Maven. 4. Focusing knob is tight enough and make focusing fast. It is a bit less tight in comparison with the MAVEN. Both are good and acceptable, it is just a question of personal preference. 5. The MEOPTA Meopro 10x42 HD I received is marked ‘Assembled in Czech’. The MAVEN C1 10x42 ED is marked ‘Japan’. Other Maven C1 I have seen are marked ‘Philippines. MEOPTA MeoPro Cons: 1. Eye placement with the MEOPTA is very critical, one needs to position the eyes right at the center of the ocular lens, otherwise, it is easy to lose the image. It is like looking through a small long tube (say a straw), you can only see through when the tube is perfectly aligned with your eyes. It can be improved by adjusting the rubber eyecups by at least one position away from the ocular lens but this narrows down the field of view.. The MAVEN C1 10x42 is more forgiving with eye placement, I never have to tilt and move the binocular to hunt for the image. 2. There appears to be a lack of focus at about 5 o’clock position and about 2/3rd from center to edge of the glass. It seems to be right where the two circles of the left and right lens intersect. It is noticeable when looking through the center but when you shift your eyes to the blur area, it becomes clear. I have not seen any complaints of similar nature so I am not sure if it is inherent to the MEOPTA or if it is my eyes. I have not noticed this problem with the Maven. 3. The rubber armor of the MEOPTA has a more sticky feel than the MAVEN. 4. MEOPTA's tube diameter is smaller than the MAVEN's and it is less comfortable holding it for viewing. This will be especially true if the viewer has large hands. However, without direct comparison with the MAVEN, I guess the size and comfort level of the MEOPTA is good enough – it is a matter of personal preference. 5. The MEOPTA rubber eyecups have only 3 positions whereas the MAVEN has 4. 6. Most vendor websites including Amazon and OpticsPlanet state that the MEOPTA's body is made of Magnesium Alloy. However, the brochure that came with the binocular states that the body is made of Aircraft Grade Aluminum Alloy. ... show more
