  • Perfect solution for legacy CD and DVD media
The USB 3.0 External CD/DVD Drive by Dainty provides a perfect solution for using legacy CD and DVD media with newer computers that no longer come with optical drives. The included instructions are pretty sparse, but not really needed. I tested this external optical drive with computers running Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 7, several versions of Linux, and even an old desktop PC that still has Windows XP installed. As a data drive, completely plug and play with all of these operating systems, and performed flawlessly. The Windows 11 and Windows 10 machines instantly recognized the device as a "DVD RW Drive," and the optical drive read my old data CDs and DVDs perfectly. Of course, to watch DVD movies on a Windows 11 or 10 machine, you must first download and install a media player such as the free VLC Media Player. With my computers running Linux which all already have VLC Media Player installed, this drive played movie DVDs with no fuss, and I could even watch a DVD movie on my old XP box using this drive and the built in Windows Media Player. The permanently attached 13.5 inch cord has both USB-A and USB-C connectors so it will plug in to any computer with a USB port, and the drive receives power from the port so a separate power supply is not needed. Note that if you are using a USB hub, make sure that the hub has enough power for all of the connected devices, because according to the manual this device can draw 3-5W so you may need the full power output of the computer's USB port. The optical drive mechanism is enclosed in a reasonably sturdy housing with rubber feet so should stand up well to normal use, although as with all optical drives, the disc tray is a little fragile so must be used with care. As of the date of this review, this external CD/DVD drive is listed as "currently unavailable," but hopefully the product will come back into stock soon (preferably still at the previous $17 price) because I want to buy another one to ensure that I can continue to use my fairly large collection of legacy CDs and DVDs. ... show more

  • Rip, Burn, And Playback All Excellent
I seldom use a DVD player, and I seldom need to rip or burn anything, but that doesn't mean never. My rig is modern enough not to include a player, so I've missed out on watching some DVDs I wanted to check out, as well as playing some tunes from old CDs that aren't on Spotify. I wasn't looking for an expensive solution, just something that works. This external player is perfect. My Win10 PC recognized it right away, no additional drivers needed. Playback using VLC player is perfect with DVD movies and CD music. Ripping and burning were faster than my old internal players. Upon finishing a burn, the CD is automatically ejected. The cord is permanently fixed to the DVD player but the other end has both type A and C plugs. I like the rubber feet that keep it from sliding. Vibration and sound are at a minimum. The size is small and easy to stash anywhere. As with all DVD players, especially external ones, the door and drawer are delicate. You must be gentle and careful to support the device as you add and remove discs. Great deal at currently well under twenty bucks. ... show more

  • Works perfectly!
Positives: Nice and compact Has USB C and A Rubber feet Negatives: A bit on the slow side Loud in operation Review: The drive works just fine. I was able to back up some old discs I had with it. It is a bit slow compared to other drives I've used (even external ones), but it's not bad by any means. This would work just fine for anyone who needs a DVD drive! ... show more

  • Simple and easy to use and connect.
I ordered this for my Lenovo ThinkPad P71 series. 90% of Laptops sold within the last 5 years will not come with a CD/DVD drive built in; my laptop was no exception to that. When I saw this with a price point of $17 for an external DVD burner, I knew that was a great price I'm likely not going to see again. On the product page, there is the choice for a DVD Reader or Burner. Both options were the same price, so I opted for the Burner. As soon as I connected this up to the USB-C port of my laptop, the CD drive showed right up under My Computer. I popped in a few Discs and much to my surprise, I was able to play a DVD for one Disc and the other disc had a bunch of files, pics and videos that loaded up w/o any issues. Overall, this is a fantastic burner, that has a nice thin profile so you can slip it in to a bag and go. The price point is perfect and Much less than what I was expecting to pay. ... show more

  • Works Perfectly.
I needed a CD drive for basic disk reading and writing. All of the “name brand” ones are insanely expensive for incredibly old technology. I found this and gave it a try. Works perfectly, no issues, for a fraction of the cost. 10/10.

  • Great addition to built computers
My husband and 7 year old son built a gaming computer for our son to use and the only thing they didn’t add was a CD drive bc they just aren’t used often anymore. But when we saw this we grabbed it to add just in case and good thing too bc now my son will pop in a DVD in and watch a movie if his sister has the tv in the living room and he’s done playing video games. Works really well. Easy enough for a 7 year old to hook up and use. Sits nicely on top of the desk top tower. ... show more

  • able to read DVDs on my laptop
The media could not be loaded. My wife and I recently got laptops and there wasn't an option for a DVD drive. I have some old software that I wanted to install. So, I thought I'd pick up an external drive and found this one from Dainty. It's very small. I can't imagine it being any smaller. This one is supposed to write CD/DVD as well as read. I didn't test burning just yet, but it was able to connect to my Windows 11 machine and play audio and movies just fine. I also tested on an older Windows 10 device as well without any issues. It comes with connections for USB-A and USB-C which is helpful, thought it would have been nice to simply have an port to connect whichever cable you want. Having the wire fixed on the back just makes storage and transport a little more difficult. I also found that you need to be relatively delicate when closing the door. If I was sloppy with it, the top would scrape a little as I closed it. It does have nice non-slip feet on it to help it remain in place. I think the price tag is quite reasonable and I am pleased with how it works so far. ... show more
