I was using a higher end gaming laptop for the last 2-3 years it had a GTX 680 installed in it. Until recently when the system broke and the cost of repair was outside what I was willing to pay right, I realized I was suddenly faced with building a new computer, or buying new laptop... or going back to a 6-7 year old rig I had from long ago. My old rig is still decent, but lacks a lot compared to my i7 gaming laptop. The old machine is a GTX 580, 8 gb ddr2 ram, and a core 2 duo. Yes this thing is showing it's age, but it's still a real gamer despite it's age. I opted to buy this new GTX970 and throw it in that old box to peep this old machine up. I knew I would be bottlenecking this brand new card a lot. I also knew I would still see significant performance gains. When I am ready to build a new gaming rig later this year or next I can transfer over this GTX 970 to that mobo. Install was a breeze. The length of the video card was actually around an inch shorter than my old GTX 580 which was a surprise. I had my 2 6 pin cables routed around back of my tray just long enough to fit the old card. When I installed this card it was so much shorter I didn't like how much tension I had to apply to get them to plug in. I opted to remove the 6 pin cables from the back tray routed path and just plug them in directly so nothing is under tension. Another surprise was the fact this video card does not run its fans when cool. I thought perhaps I had a dud until I saw the note included in the box warning you that these fans turn off 100% when the chipset is cool. I already had EVGA Precision X installed so once I set up an automated fan curve profile, it forced the fans to come on during idle. I am sure the reason they cut off the fans was a combination of fan life span preservation and power usage. I have lost cards in years past due to fans not running during a game session (failure pre game and I never realized it until full over heat) so you might say I am slightly cautious about fans not running on my high end cards. I tested on 3DMark and Heaven Benchmark 4.0 before and after install. All benchmarks I tested on have shown 2x to 2.5x score improvements even on this old bottlenecked rig. Real world game tests are showing as much as 3x-4x gains. I know if I had a proper i7 on this rig with more ram (higher speed ram too) it would be larger gains over the GTX580. However, I can't be more pleased. I was unable to run games like BF4 on this old box before, without dealing with a slide show, now I can pay normally. Games I was getting 20-25fps in like Batman Arkham Origins, Far Cry 4 I am now pushing 60-80fps even ultra settings (yes even on this old rig) which is amazing. I never had any issues with my older EVGA GTX580 I removed from this machine, it performed like a champ its whole like under heavy gaming. I retired it yesterday and it was still 100% functional. I am hoping this EVGA GTX 970 FTW will also have flawlessly smooth service history to follow. ... show more

I upgraded from an R9 280x to the GTX 970 and I'm very pleased with it. Please be aware that the 4GB of video ram is not correct and it has 3.5GB of high speed video ram and 0.5GB of a much lower speed video ram. However, there don't seem to be many games that really ever max out the 3.5GB of video ram anyways. I chose the GTX 970 over a R9 390 even though the R9 390 is the better card because it runs cooler. If you live somewhere cold or have a big room/house then this will not matter and you should go for the 390. I live in a tiny studio apartment in Hawaii where temps and humidity fluctuate between comfortable and hot, never cold. My previous R9 280x was heating up my studio by a large amount and made it very uncomfortable to work in during the summer. With the GTX 970, I notice that it also heats up the room, but not nearly as much or as quickly. I bought this so my computer would meet the minimum specs for the Oculus Rift. I suggest buying this one over a 980ti for anybody buying it for an oculus ready rig, because pascal will be out soon and you can put the $200 or so you saved into a new pascal card while still enjoying the rift in the mean time. By the time gen 2 of the rift comes out, you can upgrade to a high end pascal card and be good for another few years. ... show more

I did the math, and if your situation is similar to mine you should do your own math...and get this card ASAP. But, first things first: No coil whine here. eVGA has responded to complaints and fixed the issue. The edition of this card being sold these days on Amazon does NOT have this problem. Now, I figured I should upgrade one of my older gaming rigs. Everything in it kicks butt, but the original top of the line kick-ass eVGA GeForce GTX 295 began to struggle quite badly with newer titles, even at medium and lower graphics settings. It was time to upgrade. This GTX 970 card is not really cheap, if you think about it. After sales tax it is $402 bucks. But here's the math: I live in a studio, which means few lights or other electric appliances are working at the same time. My electric bill before I got this GTX 295 rig was around $50 a month. Somehow (and shame on me for not thinking about this earlier) I could never figure out what happened to my electric bill which, at some point doubled (yes, this rig has been my main PC for the past 5 years and it is on about 20 hours a day). GTX 295 power consumption is around 300 Wt. GTX 970 - 145 Wt. GTX 295 idle temp is 60-65 degrees Centigrade - and about 85-90 under load GTX 970 temp UNDER MAX LOAD is 45-50 degrees Centigrade (and as I work from home, my 295 used to turn my studio into a steam bath, especially in summer time, which means running air conditioner at max just to stay reasonably cool) Last, but not least, nVIDIA gives you promo codes for two FREE top new games Batman and Witcher 3 (A combined ~$120 value - Amazon emails to you the promo codes within 7-10 days after purchase... I did not get the email and logged a ticket with Amazon support. They replied within 2 hours and corrected this by re-sending the codes to me - THANK YOU AMAZON for prompt and hassle free support). So subtracting $120 from the purchase cost of the card, it becomes a $280 card. Neat, I think. So replacing 295 with 970 cut my electric bills by more than half overall. I estimate electric bill savings will have paid for the $280 cost within 4-5 months. That's even neater. Finally, my gaming frame rate demands are not as high as they used to be. Anything that plays at the frame rate of a motion picture (which is 29 frames per second) is good enough. I don't care if some other card can turn out 1000 frames per second. It just does not matter to the human eye. And the 970 FTW steadily produces AT LEAST around 60 FPS in every single game I have (that's how I have it configured in eVGA PrecisionX utility; it could produce higher FPS, but power consumption would go up; in my case power consumption never goes above 45%). I don't need 1000 FPS. Do you? Get this card. It will server you well for several years and you will save money on electric bills. ... show more
