  • Deceptive Ratings, Unreliable Customer Support
After doing a lot of research I decided to try these out. The 10 amp rating was considerably lower than my TP Link smart plugs, which are rated at 15 amps, but the TP Link are also the size of my fist and block most outlets entirely. I just received these today and contrary to the product pictured in other reviews and in Etekcity's response on the product page, the version I have is only rated for 8 amps/ 1,000 watts. I went to Etekcity's website and attempted to get some clarification on the matter. Support was very slow at responding, leaving me to wait 5 and even 10 minutes. After waiting over 30 minutes for support to verify my order and the rating of the item in question my chat was disconnected. I was willing to compromise at 10 but definitely not for 8. If you look at Etekcity's other Voltson (Smart Plug) listing with the 2 or 6 quantity option it shows in the "technical details" that it's only rated for 8 amps/ 1,000 watts. In short, these things are getting sent back. I have no use for them. If you're looking into getting into the Wi-Fi Smart Plug game then check the rating of the devices you intend to use them with first. Voltage x Amperage = Wattage. High draw devices like space heaters usually won't work with most smart plugs. ... show more

  • Work Randomly
Save your money and buy a trusted smart home brand. I purchased 8 of these plugs and they all seemed to work fine at first. One day later, 1 stopped working. I reset it and set it up again and it seemed to be fine. I noticed some would occasionally not respond and you can try again. Five days later, I wake up to find none of the plugs would respond at all. Nothing would get them to respond. I unplugged and plugged back in. They still do not work. The solution was to reset and resetup each one. It has been less than 1 hour and 3 are again non responsive. I checked my network and there are no issues. I run a mesh network with 3 wired access points. The plugs each are connected and constantly respond. Bottom Line: These are junk that will work at random times for short periods and then will not respond. Save your money! I am going back to Wemo plugs. ... show more

  • Easy to set up. Great for energy monitoring. Uses VeSync App (3* for that)
1) ETL US & Canada Certified 2) 8 amp (1000 watt @ 120volt) resistive load 5 amp (600 watt @ 120volt) inductive load 3) manual on/off on device maintains state during power outage: takes about 2-3 seconds to restore to “turn on” state when power comes back up. Obviously stays off if state was off. 4) relay load control Seamless router connection if you are on 2.4ghz, secure network. Some negative reviewers mentioned the VeSync app needed access to things like camera, contacts etc. That is just not so, at least with the latest version of app (that’s available May 1 2018). Also, a lot of bad rap on 2..4 ghz. These are not streaming devices. They do not need the bandwidth of 5ghz. But they do need range. 2.4ghz is generally much better range than 5ghz. If a 900mhz router on n band were available, that would be better for range! One reviewer even said your setup device has to be 2.4ghz. Well, yes, but only because they need to be on same network. On any dual band router, they are different networks, so yes, duh... Once set up, you can run your app on either band of same router and it works fine. A sidebar to last sentence is you can have the smart outlets on different networks of connected routers, ie, range extenders, so long as they have unique SSID’s and are protected. A concern of some reviews is the inability to delete a device once installed. On iOS devices just select device and swipe left - there will be options, including delete. Cannot comment on Android, but suspect whatever the common systemic delete method is will work. VeSync software is GUI is clumsy, but works. It will revolve. Example: energy use per device is there, but by device. A summary option that lists all devices as rows, and usage cost info as columns by time period would be cool. The info is there, but have to pull it out by device and move manually to spreadsheet, I have 12 of these currently installed. There has been a couple of surprises in energy use! I do not use the remote on/off control, just energy monitoring. Would be great to lock out software outlet control per device, so my wife doesn’t accidentally turn off the refrigerator or furnace... One really good use has been my pond pumps. Controlling the timing and having a remote on/off function, plus energy monitoring is great. These are pretty good, reliable devices. We’ll see how long they last, but my main usage is to cut my $200+ electric bill a bit. at $15 a piece, and portable, with 12, I should have good whole data in a couple of months. Other systems that are Wifi energy monitors are over one to several hundred dollars A MEASUREMENT POINT. These are more versatile and cost effective, except they won’t report on 240v. devices, like the AC. But, monitoring the 120volt furnace, I can see the relative effects of thermostat tampering/control. Thankd for reading. ... show more

  • Look pretty but fail to work consistently
Easily one of the worst setup experiences I have had with a product and that is saying something as I have a lot and tried a lot of devices. The software needs to be more clear cut when items will failure occurs. The fact it also have no UL cert I can find is disturbing and the low wattage capability is something everyone here needs to read 3 times about before purchasing. There is nothing better to pop one out of the box and it works with no issues, well not really true actually as it will not work over my network at all. It requires APN setup which worked on 1 of 4 units. So time to buy 3 more sets to get 4 plugs that work? The design and look are nice. the quality seems good overall. That all said they need to work. Also there seems to be two software apps in the Google play store for the same type of device that is not confusing at all. Really have not had much luck with any remote outlet product WeMo being the same type of setup issues.Well that and the fact that I will not even start of the potential security risks of these types of devices on your home network. This one really has no details about security I can find which is even more annoying when it comes to IOT devices. ... show more
