This small lantern is a little less than 5 1/2" tall and about 3 1/2" in diameter. If you need smaller, then you need a flashlight! As for light, it has plenty! I have 2 LED lanterns 10" tall by 5" dia. and they put out half as much light as these smaller ones. My bigger ones are not efficient enough to read by, these are. I need these strictly for outages, which we seem to have a lot of, and I appreciate the area coverage of these. No, it will not make it easy to read a few feet away from them, no lantern does that, but it will make it easy to see and navigate in a 15' x 15' room. They are adjustable in only one way, and that is how much you open them. (At just high enough to turn them on, they make great guiding lights for a footpath or a cluttered area.) All the bulbs are on no matter how close to closed it is, so there is no power saving advantage to having it lowered. 12 Hours of emergency or evening lighting outside, is a lot of hours! It will more than stand up to all emergency needs except getting lost in a cave! LOL If it only had 3-4 hours of good light, I would not be happy with this, my first thought is always 'how to extend the emergency light time' and 'is it adjustable'. Well, you can't, and its not....Because of that this would not be an economic idea for an extended camping trip. But this is not being touted as a night after night lighting fix, as an emergency light, I don't need to worry about that. I joined Etekcity's review program, because I have purchased several of their products and haven't found one I didn't appreciate a lot! As such I don't feel bad about getting one of their products at a reduced price or free for reviewing them. I take my time, and look at all the negative reviews and see if any apply to the product i received. So far.... yes it is pretty light, but no it would not blow away in less that 50mph winds. And i don't think you would be outside enjoying an evening in that kind of wind anyway. It has the hard anodized look and feeling of a well coated flashlight. The handles are wide enough to be easy to carry and a bungee cord or rope will attach them to the side of any tree or post, or you can hang them from a limb or tent pole. Heavy enough not to tip over, and good quality plastic instead of glass or cheep plastic that cracks. I don't see anything cheap or flimsy feeling about them at all! Don't know what else to say about these, except my other two larger ones are going out into storage and I will be getting 2 more of these to store inside for emergencies. I highly recommend them! PS: If you DO get a lemon, for Pete's sake tell them! They are very quick and easy to talk to. Believe it or not my title is a good thing! The second I pulled the battery tab and pulled it open, while looking directly at it, I was blinded. Heck I was seeing blobs for a solid minute! I happened upon this while browsing Black Friday Deals and it was offered at a lowered price. I have a similar style lantern with LED's that I love. It doesn't collapse down like this one and it's bigger and heavier overall, but it's great during power outages, so I thought this might be a nice addition. I live in the woods and I lose power A LOT. So I'm always trying out new non-electric light ideas. The one thing I dislike about the lantern I already have is that it uses D Batteries, which I don't generally keep on hand. This little Etekcity lantern uses AA's, which I always have on hand. Due to the small size of this model, I wasn't sure how bright it would be. I checked my old LED lantern and saw that it only has 24 LED's (8 on each side; it's 3-sided like this model). So when I saw this model has 30 LEDS, I figured I can't go wrong if I'm already happy with 24 LEDs. It arrived and was even smaller than I realized, it's about the size of a soda can when closed, but a little bit bigger around. It came with 3 AA batteries already installed, which is a nice bonus. Remove the plastic tab from the batteries, and Voila! Simply pull up on the metal handles and it comes on. No switch, just pull it up to turn it on and push it back down to turn it off. You can also "dim" it by pushing down only part way, it stops wherever you want. Although it doesn't turn off any of the lights, it only hides them, so dimming it is esthetics only, it doesn't save any juice. I'm not a camper, but this would definitely fit in a backpack easily, and would be great for travel. But I plan to keep it right at home for power outages. I have a very small house with limited storage, so the compact size is perfect. When it got fully dark I tested it in my closed bedroom and it lit the entire room. Not crazy blind-you kind of bright but certainly bright enough to go about your routine in a tent or a large room easily and comfortably. The only word of caution I can think of is that the threading to the bottom is plastic, so use care when you open and close the battery compartment so you don't destroy the plastic threading. But it's very easy to unscrew, change batteries and close again. I really love everything about this compact sized lantern and I'm glad I purchased it. ... show more
