  • High-End Performance for Inexpensive machine
The media could not be loaded. When I was first setting up this machine, I was a little disappointed with the cheap plastic look of it. The exterior gave me a retro-orginal-Mr-Coffee-machine vibe, but the machine was a lot heavier than I expected which told me the inner workings seemed to be more rugged and sturdy. There's a lot of features of this machine that suggest a high-end functionality. I noticed the portafilter had some heft to it. The handle felt solid, and it was heavy towards the basket end. This is the part of an espresso machine that you handle and work with the most, so it's a good sign that this didn't feel cheap. The portafilter also has this nice feature where there is a small protruding nub on the side of the filter basket that prevents the filter basket from popping out of the portafilter when knocking used grounds out of the filter. The filter basket can only be removed when a notch on the lip is aligned with a small slit in the portafilter. The built-in grinder on this machine is also really well designed. The grind fineness setting wheel on the side has a wide range of settings that can get the grounds down to Turkish Coffee fineness if you want, but that is not good for making espresso as it allows the coffee to be too compact to allow the water through. I found the higher number settings good for an espresso grind. The grinder is also able to grind coffee right into the filter basket without making any mess! That's not an easy task if you've ever ground coffee--it gets everywhere. There's a grind funnel attachment included with the machine that helps allow the coffee to be piled loosely out of the grinder without overflowing the sides of the filter basket. Once the proper amount of coffee is dispensed by the grinder you can remove the filter attachment and tamp the grinds lightly to prepare for espresso extraction. The machine is able to make a high-quality espresso with a good head of crema on top consistently. The frothing steam wand works quite well and allows you to use all the steam you need to finish frothing the milk for lattes and cappuccinos. This machine doesn't have the high-end stainless-steel finish, but it's also priced well below those types of machines. I feel it has a very high-end performance, just with a more economical encasement. ... show more

  • Tricky for true beginners
Since the description touts this maker as being beginner friendly, it's appropriate that I share my insights into this machine as a first-time owner of an espresso machine. It is not intuitive. The instruction manual is worded in a tricky way, with button symbols interspersed throughout the text in a way that makes you think these buttons should be pushed. In most cases, they should NOT be. The instructions walk you through an initial cleaning cycle of the machine, however, it doesn't tell you that you should then reset the machine afterwards. This applies specifically to the water turning knob (and btw, the names referred in the text do not match the names in the parts diagram/chart, so you have to make some assumptions.) When cleaning, you turn the knob to on, but you'll need to turn the knob to off in order to produce any coffee. Until I read the troubleshooting guide, I didn't know it meant when some buttons flashed and others turned steady. This seems pretty important, and it is. Flashing means preheating, steady means ready. A no-brainer perhaps, but not when you're using a new machine for the first time. After four failed cups, I finally deciphered the correct sequence of steps to produce a cup of espresso: 1. Press the power button. 2. Make sure side water knob is turned to off position. 3. Press Espresso Heating if you're coming to the machine cold. 4. Once lights are steady white, press for 1 or 2 cups. By the way, I couldn't figure out how to change the filter cups since there were no instructions on how to do it, but after fiddling with it, I found out there's a notch on each cup that needs to align with the handle in order for the cup to come loose. 5. To use steam after you've poured your espresso, press the steam button and then turn the side water knob until the steam releases. You'll have to play with the knob to find the right pressure. 6. If any step fails to yield results, hit the on/off button and it resets it. For some reason it requires that occasionally. After all that, I finally got two good pours of espresso. Crema comes out just like it should. I notice the grounds in the cup filter thing are more than a little damp so perhaps I don't need to tamp it so much. I'll play with it. I haven't tried the grind function or the cold espresso function. There's also a free flow option, which I believe allows you to keep pouring to whatever size you need. The machine makes an odd, thumping brrrr sound as its pouring, and I don't know if that's normal, but it probably is. Just thought I'd mention it since I'm used to a Keurig which produces a significantly different, quieter sound. Appearance wise, the machine looks a bit 80s retro with its square shape covered in bone-white plastic. Reminds me of old Tandy computers. I don't mind it. I only care about the espresso it produces. Overall, if you're familiar with these machines I'm sure you'll be fine. As a genuine beginner, there's a bit of a learning curve, but hopefully my tips assist you. ... show more

  • Easy to set up. Easy to use. Amazing cup of coffee.
This was so easy to set up. Pulled it from the box, washed the necessary parts, added filtered water to the reservoir, and ran a couple cups of water through the portafilter and the steam wand. Then on to the first cup. I used a medium roast bean I had in the office, (yes, you CAN use medium roast or even light roast. Medium roast is the most forgiving bean for figuring out what you like. Light roast is hardest to work with. Dark roast is typical, but I didn't have any beans on hand). The grinder is adjustable so you can get a very smooth salt-like grind for espresso, but if you want something coarser for a more typical cup of coffee, that's an option. This comes with a dosing funnel in case you want to use an already ground coffee so you don't make a mess. The tamper is plastic, but works just fine. This makes a fantastic espresso. The crema is gorgeous and flavorful. It's great by itself, as an Americano and as a cappuccino. I don't drink a lot of coffee at home, but enjoy it at work and was tired of pour over coffees or worse, really bad office coffee. It's compact with a big punch and perfect for the home or for personal use at work. This isn't a commercial machine and if you want something that can be used by a group of people, this probably isn't a good fit. ... show more
