  • Literally perfect. Believe the hype.
Style: Extra Light
I got the extra light set so I could replace my zingy, trebly Thomastik’s with more traditional-sounding flats that have a similar easy-to-play low tension feel. These absolutely delivered in every single way. The string surface is impossibly, unbelievably smooth without being sticky or “grabby” in the way that highly polished flats oftentimes are. Sound-wise, the strings have that classic flatwound thump, so if you love the way that La Bellas and Pyramids sound, but you want an easier playing experience and a smoother surface, then give these a try. Like La Bellas these also have a pretty nice bite to them when the tone knob is turned up, so while these aren’t bright you can absolutely play rock with them. The extra light set is super low tension as one would expect, but unlike the ultra-bendy Thomastiks and many other round-core low tension flats (I believe these Smoothies are hex-core) these are still nice and stiff, so I’m able to play with very comfortable low action. The low tension and light gauge is so easy to play, practicing complex lines for hours on end feels almost completely effortless. They’re definitely pricey, but flats last forever and I doubt that I’ll take them off any time in the foreseeable future, so I’ll definitely get my money’s worth. The playability is phenomenal, the classic timbre can fit into almost situation that calls for flatwound strings, and the muted blue color on the silks looks very classy. 10/10 strings. ... show more

  • Truly special strings
Style: Extra Light
These strings are truly special. The extra light set is exceptionally well-balanced, and they feel extra smooth and sound like vintage flatwounds right out of the package. They respond incredibly well to different playing dynamics. In terms of tension and feel, they’re similar to La Bella Low Tension Flats and Thomastik-Infelds, but in my experience, they sound bigger than both. I was initially concerned that the extra light gauges might feel too thin under my fingers, but to my surprise, they felt fuller than the TIs - probably due to how smooth they are. Over the past 20 years, I’ve tried many different brands of flatwound strings, and these have quickly become my favorites. They’re definitely worth trying. The big question for me is how they’ll age over time - since these are new strings on the market, only time will tell. Overall, they are now my go-to strings. ... show more

  • Great sounds, imprecise fit for top-loading Fenders
Style: Medium
These strings sound great and are very smooth for sure. Great classic tones. The reason I take away a star is that the silk at either end is not the appropriate length. If you try to use this on any standard top-loading Fender bass, you're likely to see the silk hanging over the bridge saddle at the ball end, and at the other end the silk portion isn't long enough, which leaves the winding in contact with the tuning post. Are these a big deal? Probably not. You can cut the silk down at the ball end or use another ball as a spacer, and at the nut end of the string it may not cause an issue to have the wrapped portion in contact with the post, but no other flatwound strings I've ever tried on this bass (A 1960s Precision Bass very similar to Pino's) have ever had issues with the length of the silk or the wound portion of the string. If you don't care about this or you have a string-through body, maybe they're perfect for you. ... show more

  • Strings, Smoothies, and Second Chances
Style: Extra Light
Music has always been part of the Patrick family soundtrack. When the kiddos were still, well, kiddos, evenings often wrapped up around guitars and keyboards - family jam sessions after dinner. Heck, Mrs. Patrick and I even met on stage, both wielding instruments in an 80's cover band. Our kids took the torch, touring Europe between high school and college. Eventually, the guitars passed into their careful stewardship. But imagine my surprise when the eldest Patrick child announced that, for his upcoming annual summer visit to the Patrick hacienda, he'd be bringing along my beloved Martin D-35 (officially his now, but we all know better). Apparently, he was eager to strike up the old family band once again. Herein lies the dilemma. These hands of mine, seasoned by woodworking more than fretwork these days, haven't wrapped around anything remotely guitar-shaped in years. The smallest instrument I currently possess - other than our beloved baby grand - is a trusty old Gibson bass. Enter the Ernie Ball Extra Light Pino Palladino Smoothie Flats. With precision-polished cobalt-alloy ribbons, these premium flatwounds felt like butter straight out of the package. Perfect for my woodworking-weary digits, the ultra-low tension made getting back into the groove less intimidating and more inviting. After stringing up, I admit there was a moment of hesitation. Was playing bass after all these years really like riding a bike? Well, sort of. Sure, there was some rusty fumbling at first, but it wasn't long before muscle memory kicked in. Turns out, I've still got "skilz" (as the younger folks say). These strings have a rich, smooth tone - deep and vintage, like a good conversation between old friends. Now, part of each evening is dedicated to reacquainting these old fingers with bass lines of yesteryear. Thank goodness most bass lines involve just one note at a time! Summary These Ernie Ball Smoothie Flats turned my reluctant reprise into a genuine pleasure - smooth feel, classic tone, and gentle on veteran fingers. Pros: ✅ Ultra-smooth feel right from the start ✅ Rich, vintage, mellow tone perfect for nostalgic grooves ✅ Extra light gauge ideal for easing back into playing ✅ Low-tension, forgiving to tired or unpracticed hands Cons: ❌ A bit pricey - but quality usually is 🏅 Verdict: 🎸 If your fingers have seen better days but your musical spirit refuses to retire, these Smoothie Flats are a godsend. Time to bring back the family band! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 Stars) ... show more

  • Too much change in gauge.
Style: Medium
I ordered the mediums and put them on my Fender Custom Shop Jazz bass. The E string is a dream, but going from a .108 E string to just .073 on the A is too much of a change. When I say too much, I'm referring to the feel and fullness of tone. Normally, I'd expect a drop from .108 to .087 or .085. Oh well, they're not for me, but Pino is still great. ... show more
