After going thru 2 other expensive cooktops in 20 years, the new one that came with our new house, and a pricey Kitchen Aid unit that lasted less than 7 years, we decided to go cheap this time. And it works just fine. Only thing we noticed is you can hear the gas flowing at higher temp settings, but we got used to that. I try to clean up spills quickly, and follow up with a spray stainless steel cleaner / polish. It cleans easily and looks like new. Only issue I had was the pressure regulator protrudes from the bottom in a different location than the prior unit, and conflicted with some shallow drawers below the cooktop location, requiring some extra woodworking, but these drawers are not typically found in most installations. In all, we are very happy with it, and happy we didn't pay several times as much for another big-$$, low quality Big Name cooktop.

The Good: 1. Very nice appearance. 2. Regulator/adapters included (for 3/8 gas line). 3. Burner/flame quality is very good (nice blue uniform flame). 4. Quality of the casting (grates). Much better than those on my Frigidaire, which wobbled and didn't provide an even surface. 5. Easy to clean..grates lift right, wipe down and you are done. The glass surface doesn't hold on to cooked on food as easily as bare stainless or painted enamel finishes. The Bad: 1. No mounting brackets (unit simply rests on counter or must be caulked in place). 2. Flame control is horrible. 1/4 turn from full on to off, with very little variance in flame height. Tried contacting customer service and received a photo of someone adjusting the gas regulator. Tried it with no change in the range from low to high flame (still too little variance....flame simply doesn't lower enough to simmer). I've lowered my rating from 4 to 3 stars because of these significant defect in design. 3. Non-standard depth, leaves slight gap in counter opening on front/rear. This unit is a little narrower than the standard units made for the US market, e.g. GE, Whirlpool, etc. 4. The grates for the front burners don't provide full support for large pots at the front of the cook top near the control knobs. Small burners should have been placed up front. 5. Not really a flaw but the glass top does streak easily. I personally don't care because I use the cooktop as a cooktop, not something that's supposed to remain pristine in appearance. Actually, a quick wipe down with streak free vinegar glass cleaner does the trick. Been through several cooktops over the years. Jenn-air: burners corroded and ignitor system failure (10 years). Frigidaire: Burner grates frequently broke, gas valve failure (4 years). Purchased this as a stop gap, hoping it lasts a few years until I can source a quality 30" cooktop at a good price (prices have increased too much to justify spending $800 on a unit that was $500 2 years ago).

I have 3 children and am in the kitchen all the time, making loads of messes. This stove top stands up to the constant use and then cleans up like a breeze every night. I haven't had to scrub at a spot yet, it just wipes right up!

much cheaper than any stores had to offer for same brand which was surprising. I wanted white but no one has that. I hate stainless steel as it's too hard to keep clean. this is a very nice stove top. BUT the knobs do not come off for access to clean better but a toothbrush would work. definitely recommend for the price and value before you can't get them anymore.

After using this cook top for several weeks I am not feeling like I got my money's worth. This unit replaced an Amana four burner that was 15+ years old. I did convert this unit to LP, which was relatively painless with the supplied kit. The small burner (listed at 4000 BTU) which is stated to be able to simmer does no such thing. Anything you use it for boils, and when you adjust the flame from high to low, the visual appearance is barely noticeable on flame height. We didn't have this much of an issue with out old unit, which had a burner rating of 4500 BTU. Dealing with customer service has been mixed, done via email only, dealing with broken English. They did not direct responses to what it was I was telling them, instead focusing on whether the regulator was converted or not. It took several emails back and forth to finally get the answers to their recommendation for adjusting the flame height: which, for the record, you have to unscrew each burner from the top of the unit & lift it off. Not easy as I had sealed the unit with caulk. While I was able to reduce the flame on the small burning, the large left front burner would not adjust whatsoever. Also, the grates are already warping as pans will rock back & forth when in the center of a burner. I put oil in a skillet on the front burner & it rolled toward the back, toward the middle of the cook top. I thought maybe my counter was not level. Then I did the same with the burner directly behind: the oil rolled toward the front (again, center of the cook top) so the grates are bowed, evidently. Empava did offer to replace the unit with a new one. However, I would have to pay the shipping for returning the old unit. As I live in OH & they are in CA, it would cost about 1/3 the retail price; and I may get another unit that's the same -- or possibly worse. I gave it two stars overall because of the cheaper cost compared to bigger brand names. However, once again the old phrase is proven true: you get what you pay for.
