    • If you are looking for a Mortar and Pestle, buy this one.
Nice. What can I say... made in France, good sized Mortar and Pestle and I love the color. I didn't want a stone M&P because who wants shards of unknown stone (can you say heavy metals) in their guacamole or crushed garlic? This is lovely, French ceramic.

This is a terrific mortar. Had mine 4 years now. The ceramic surface provides a perfect combination of enough smoothness to move the pestle effortlessly, yet enough micro-roughness to aid grinding spices. Those people who complain it broke were not using it right. Do not pound the mortar with the pestle. Stir the mortar like you are stirring a bowl, while aplying downward pressure. If that doesn't work, place the pestle directly on the spice (or other food), and push down while rocking the handle back & forth. Don't strike the mortar. ... show more

This is a well-made high quality item from Le Creuset. They also have a cheaper Made in China line, but this pestle and mortar is the real deal. As the ceramic base of the pestle, and the inside of the mortar, is pale-colored, sooner or later it's going to show coloration from whatever you're grinding (e.g. black peppercorns). However, it's easy to wipe and wash clean, and if deep staining occurs, you'll have to live with it. C'est la vie. UPDATE: because of the large shape of the mortar, and the small shape of the pestle, it is inevitable that sooner or later you will end up breaking the mortar as it's ceramic. A crack developed within a year of occasional use, and eventually the mortar fell apart. The issue seems to be that the mortar interior is smooth, not coarse. So is the pestle ceramic surface. Therefore, lightly moving the pestle around the mortar in a circular motion will not grind down much, you have to tap or thunk it. And if you thunk it too hard, it cracks. Oops. Will not buy again. ... show more

The color and glaze are attractive, and I leave it out even when it's not being used - it's kind of a display item! The mortar is solid and has some weight to it, but it's not too heavy; and the pestle's handle is made of sturdy wood that's as thick as it can be without becoming un-ergomatic, or at least looking odd. The end of the pestle is covered in the same ceramic that the mortar is made from, and they both have just enough roughness to give a light bit of grip as you crush and grind. ... show more
