This is the model black/2 cups, polished on the outside. Perfect size and looks amazing. Feels solid and the seasoning process was much easier than I expected; actually, the initial rice I ground was barely tainted. Beware that this is a heavy item and will probably break if it falls from a counter. It has a 10-yr warranty, which is a big plus. The only detail I didn't like was that the Pestle was polished all the way except the very end: if the non-polished part would have included the last 1.5 or 2 inches it would have been easier to grind against the walls of the mortar. The way it is and given the slope of the walls I have to put the mortar almost horizontal to be able to grind against the walls with the tip of the pestle, which is weird. I guess I should learn to use it as it was designed, which seems somewhat limited. ... show more

The mortar is a good quality granite and good size. The pestle is a great weight and quickly grinds spices. The set came in good condition and is pretty enough to be left on the counter. I would highly recommend this product.

This item is big, heavy and just what I needed. I wish I’d ordered the polished version, but the item I received is beautiful! Unfortunately it didn’t come with instructions on how to season prior to its first use. I would advise more than just washing and rinsing prior to use, I did a bit of research and ground rice first, followed by garlic, kosher salt and black pepper to season. Going through the frustrating process of shopping for a coffee grinder at home, I realized the good ones were too expensive for anybody but professional coffee shops, and the cheap ones too poor to produce good results. I started thinking to myself, why can't I just grind them with a simple mortar and pestle? A tool that has been around since human beings formed small family groups into the first communities? It takes five minutes to grind, twist, smash, and stir whole beans down to a suitable consistency for my cheap coffee maker, but when I do, the results are amazing. Flavor with no bitterness! I am very happy that I got the 4 c mortar and pestle. I got annoyed (after many years of) grinding spices in a shallow India stlye and then in a marble 1 cup mortar and pestle (with a rough interior) watching seeds fly away or resist getting crushed. This solves both problems - the rougher grinding surfaces makes short work of crushing seeds, and they can't escape. I will also use it for pestos, salsas and guacamole. It is also very good for peeling garlic, and for mashing garlic, fresh ginger, etc. I had two worries before ordering this, both needless. I haven't noticed any flavors, even garlic, remaining after using and rinsing well. I thought the weight could make it difficult to transfer the contents to another bowl or the mortar to the sink but it is not that heavy for me. (I have used cast iron cookware for decades.) ... show more
