  • Order bigger BTUs than you think you need..
Okay, so I bought the smallest one (8,000 BTU), because I am only using it to augment a central air system that is overtaxed by a poorly insulated apartment. I like the unit's look and ease of installation. I had to cut down the plastic window slider because it was too wide for the very narrow window I wanted to vent from. It was very easy to power up and control without looking much at the instructions. I really love the innovative oscilatting louvers that completely close when the unit is turned off. Makes it look a lot nicer than some of the more industrial-looking portable a/c units out there. After running it a couple of hours, I realized that it was JUST BARELY going to solve my problem, without really knocking it out of the park. I'd used comparable window units before, and they did a better job. This hammers home what I've read in other reviews an elsewhere: Dollar for dollar, window units get you more cooling. Soo, if an 8K BTW window unit does the trick, you'll need a bigger (10K or 12K) portable a/c to get similar results. I guess window units are more efficient, because they have a larger heat exchange area, and don't have to vent everything through a little hose. This isn't a failure of this unit...just something to think about when you're choosing. As for the remote, it works well, though in trying to make it look all sleek and streamlined, you have to stare at it a bit to determine the function of the buttons. A lot is made of the noise level of air conditioners. This one is named for its quietness, and I found it to be reasonably quiet and pleasant sounding. None of the whining/wheezing sounds that come out of a lot of a/c units. I think that anyone who says this unit is noisy either has unreasonable expectations, and/or is using it on a reverberating surface such as an old hardwood floor. Mine is on carpet, and I think that helps a lot. Overall, I'm happy with my choice...I just wish I'd considered the 10K unit a little more carefully. ... show more

  • Quiet and cold
Awesome price and really cold! Quiet as expected, I have setup in my workout room, and it makes it artic if desired. I was very skeptical because of the price but I am impressed so far after 2 months of use!

  • Great unit; tricky assembly
I’ve had this air conditioner for more than a year now and it’s meeting my needs very well. I use it in a large attic bedroom to supplement central air May - September when it gets very warm in our area. It cools the room very well. First of all, the unit is heavy, even after removing it from the box. You will need to be strong enough to lift 50 pounds, if you plan to move it upstairs/downstairs. It does have wheels you can put on the unit, so it’s easy to maneuver once you get it in the right room. There were some tricky things for assembling this that caused me a bit of frustration. The window vent doesn’t work seamlessly with my windows. The vent panel fits into my window without the extension piece, but there’s a bit of a gap. Once the extension is in place, the vent panel doesn’t fit. I pad with some extra foam to make it fit and use heavy duty duct tape to seal it shut. Assembling the vent tube is where there’s the most frustration. The couplers on either end of the tube don’t screw on easily. You have to carefully thread them while the accordion tube is extended or they won’t stay on. And it’s super easy to inadvertently collapse the tube while trying to screw them on. It took many, many attempts and lots of patience to get this right. (If the manufacturer sent them pre-assembled, this would eliminate a LOT of frustration.) The unit is a little loud when running, but it’s white noise that actually helps with sleeping. It cools down our room very quickly and keeps it comfortable all night. The remote control is a nice feature for adjusting the temp. It’s worked well through two summers and there hasn’t been a problem. **** 2024 Update **** This has been a great purchase. Six years on and it is still working very well. We make sure to clean the filter regularly during the summer and it still works just as well as the day we bought it. ... show more

  • Nice design and easy to set up
Very nice design and seems to work well. Simple to set up. Quiet? No, it’s not quiet. I use headphones to watch TV while it’s running. It is quiet enough to sleep and provides good background 'white' noise. The compressor does not grind, it's hums louder than the fan, but it's still just a hum. I have to update! It has been working great. It is actually a lot quieter than another brand I have (but I still can't say it's 'quiet'). In fairness the other one is 14000 BTU, but this Emerson seems to do as well cooling as the other even though it's only rated for 150 sq ft. My bedroom suite must be about 350 sq feet and the Emerson performs very well. I've also enjoyed discovering a couple other features. It has sleep mode as well as eco mode. Eco mode seems to turn it on and off, not just the fan, but the entire ac. That's a good thing. Others leave the fan running continuously and just turns the compressor on and off. The sleep mode is nice. It dims the light and shuts it down after a long period cool temps. It works so you can go to sleep with the ac on, but let it shut down when the nighttime temps are cool enough. I'm no an Emerson employee and I have no expertise in HVAC, so you'd have to verify any of my comments by reading the instructions. All I can say is that over the last two months, I've become very pleased with this purchase and would do it again. If I replace the 14000 BTU unit (other brand) I will buy an Emerson Quiet Kool model. ... show more
