  • Thoughts on my two etrikes
Color: Husky Plus-red
This is my 2nd etrike, and to be completely honest, where I should have started in the first place. This will be a pretty detailed review, so if you just want the short version here it is. This trike has pretty much all of the features I wanted/needed at a good price point and its of excellent quality. Ok, now the details. I'm 5'10 and 250#. This etrike is about a third larger proportionally than my first, who I will not be naming as that is not the point of the review, but it was advertised as being suitable for someone my size. That is technically accurate, but the Husky Plus is a far better fit in terms of sizing to me in particular. I will be comparing the two a lot in the review just to point out the differences and what I wish I had knew prior to purchase. Prior to this point my last interaction with bicycles was about four decades ago when it was my primary mode of getting around and to and from school. Ive had BMX, MTB, 10 speeds and even a big wheel once upon a time so reasonably experienced. I've also had two and three wheel motorcycles and some of that experience flavored my impressions on migrating to this platform. Lets get started. Having both an active front fork suspension and the usual spring seat post, it handles both bumpy road and mild dirt riding with ease. The large contact patch on the 4" fat tires has never felt like I was going to leave the road or tilt. The other etrike came with a solid front fork and it rides much harsher in comparison. The Husky provides a much more comfortable ride overall, both being better sized for me and having that active suspension front forks setup. Both use the same triangular seat and adjustable seat back so no difference there - I've not seen these be really comfortable yet, may get a gel cushion for the seat. This trike has a shimano shifter where the other was a fixie. This allows much better riding as a trike, as I don't "spin out" and have problems peddling when PAS is active. I didn't realize that the motor which is the same size on both but 48v on the Husky and 36v on the other will easily be putting out enough speed that you hit a point where no matter how fast you pedal you aren't actually doing anything. Since the whole idea of an etrike was exercise as well as transport it defeated the purpose that I would hit a point where my effort was superfluous. The braking system is much better on the Husky, as it uses three disc brakes and they are hydraulically activated. On my first, it had a front and rear with the rear being mounted on the rear axle. It was also cable activated only, which I must admit was an improvement over the bikes of my youth which all used rubber friction on the rim, but the Husky brakes are much better than the first. Both have a parking lock which on an incline - I have a ramp to put the trikes in my barn shed is a great feature. Both are folders, which after the initial "Hey, that's nifty" is a feature I'm not likely to use that often. Its not going to make a huge difference in the size of storage or transport, and I'd rather use a cargo/scooter carrier then attempt to lift either one into the back of a van or suv. What this does mean is that the handlebars and stem are a bit more tricky to align during assembly, but both have that issue so its a wash. Once locked in place neither frame feels wobbly due to the articulation. One interesting thing I noticed that is while the Husky is of larger size it weighs about the same as the other. The other has a steel frame, whereas the Husky uses AL. Worth thinking about if you are having to move them on and off trailers, etc. The cargo racks on both are of similar design, though the Husky is bigger and the front rack is better secured with four screws holding it to the frame. The other had a snap lock top on the rear, but its a feature of dubious use as it limits how large of a package you could take with you and wasn't easily removable. I prefer a cargo net approach, and the Husky came with a bungee style strap. The Husky comes with a color display out of the box, where I had to upgrade that on the other. I have vision issues so the bigger the display, and especially one that has a shade hood is what I need. This is an item that I will be upgrading on the Husky at some future point but the factory one is better out of the box than the other. Kudos also that the manufacturer has multiple videos available talking about how to program the display as well as multiple repair scenarios. Would also be nice if they would do a routine maintenance video series showing how to properly do the every trip/month/six month type of stuff. Electrically the Husky wins hands down. Higher voltage and dual batteries of higher amp hours wins, nuff said. The range on the Husky will be considerably more and while I had considered upgrading to 48v on the first trike, the amount of work and limited return on investment is what ultimately decided me on getting a second etrike as no matter how much I upgraded the electrical system it wouldn't make up for the lesser size of the trike, the single gear and the less impressive braking system. Always gotta balance the go fast, with the slow down and having spent a lifetime building and tuning hot rods and motorcycles I'm keenly aware that straight line acceleration is not always the best first goal. The paint finish is excellent on both, but I do wish the Husky came with a small amount of touch up paint. The other trike did include that and its small, about the size of a lipstick container and easily kept in a tube bag or in the cargo baskets. The tires on the Husky are true four inch fat tires from the factory. I had put three inch tires on the others two inch rims and it improved the ride a bit and allowed me to source more knobby tires. I live in the desert southwest and thorns and sharp pointy rocks are *everywhere*. I had already installed anti puncture liners on the other trike tires as they suffered a thorn and flat situation within 24 hours of arrival and on the second ride. So far the Husky has been on both road of decent and much less decent quality and the same desert areas with no such issue. Could be luck or it could be the tire composition of the Husky is better. Here is one point where the other did a better job - they included a patch kit with the trike. True, it wasn't large and the tire lever/spoons were small but at least it was included. Its important to me as mentioned about the dangerous sharp environment they both are expected to live in. Unboxing and assembly took me about three hours total. Wasn't in a hurry and I had a bundle of additional goodies (more below) to integrate as well as the factory items. Have a couple of trash bags handy as there is a *lot* of packaging to discard. This is good, as the trike was in perfect shape on arrival but the box and associated protective wrap makes quite a pile when done. It came with a variety of tools, but I ended up using my own despite my usual desire to see how far I can get using what came in the box. I will throw them in a bag and keep for trail fixes. Ok, final conclusions. I got the Husky Plus as I wanted a cassette geared etrike with dual batteries and hydraulic braking. I didn't realize at the time that I would be getting a better sized to me unit, as I had honestly no clue that my original was made for someone of a lesser stature. The wider tires were a big plus, as well as the "Dads Day" bundle that I got purchasing via Amazon. With that bundle I got a helmet, handlebar mounted mirrors, front cargo basket, a *metal* cell phone mount (kudos, it's really nice) and a bike cup holder mount. All are of good and in one case excellent quality. I didn't end up mounting the mirrors, I prefer helmet mounted ones, but they are a good set and came with the trike. The photos show the trike both by itself and with my original. If its not obvious the Husky is in red, and the first one is in orange (which I wish the Husky was available in that color, its a favorite). I will be keeping the orange one as a secondary for companion riders, but the Husky is going to be my primary self propelled transportation as it ticks off all the things I had to have. While I'm sure I'll keep tinkering with it (retired engineer) its a much better trike for me with much less effort than what I've poured into the other. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • I tried to buy spare batteries and couldn't, so I have to return it
Color: Husky Plus-grey
The "110 mile range" is actually a bit misleading. You only get that in PAS1, which is a mode where you are doing almost all the pedaling and the motor and battery are used only to help you get over hills. The throttle-only range combining both batteries is more like 36 miles. If you are like me, where strenuous activity causes your blood pressure to drop to dangerous levels, that's just barely acceptable. This wouldn't be so bad if the batteries recharged in a couple of hours, i.e. you can make a 32-mile trip, recharge and head back home. But it takes 8 hours to recharge the batteries which is just too long. The best solution to this is to carry spare charged batteries with you for the ride back. But the manufacturer is sold out of the rear 18AH batteries and have no idea when they will have them back in stock again and they don't even sell spare15AH front batteries at all! So, I have no choice but to return the bike and accessories kit unopened and try to find another long-range e-trike manufacturer who actually has spare batteries in stock that they can sell you. Edit: Puckipuppy's customer service was able to find an extra 18AH rear battery for me and that partially alleviates the issue for me. They still don't sell the 15AH front battery though, even though the bike will not work without it. It will work without the rear battery, but you are limited to 480W at the motor and will have trouble getting over hills. Anyway, I went ahead and put the bike together. I was able to do that by myself even with medical issues although it would have been much easier with a second person helping me. They included all the tools necessary to put it together. I did the math, and I will still have to do some pedaling to do that 64-mile round trip, but it looks manageable if I take the medication midodrine to raise my blood pressure during the ride. I changed my review from one to four stars for their excellent customer service. Edit 10/28/2024: I had a massive 600AH LiFePo4 12V battery that I was using for the off-grid solar power of several rooms in my house to save electricity, but several years ago I replaced the 10,000-Watt inverter with several smaller tie-inverters that added the solar power directly to the AC line of the whole house without needing batteries. So, I was able to convert that battery to the 48V needed to power the trike using a 1000W 12V to 56V high efficiency converter with an XT60 connector to boost the rear battery. This gives me a 120-to-250-mile throttle-only range (depending on hills) and can be recharged at up to 200 Amps, meaning that after 250 miles you can recharge in just three hours and go another 250 miles. The battery takes almost all the space in the storage basket, but I can strap a separate crate (with a locking lid to make it rain-proof) on the top of it if needed. This basically eliminates the range limit entirely. There is a down-side towards hauling this big battery though. It weighs about 100 pounds. Although the manufacturer says the trike can handle up to 500 pounds, I found that hauling just 100 pounds of cargo can make this thing crawl up hills. I'm talking 2mph or even less. I haven't found any hills that it can't climb yet but 2mph can get pretty frustrating when you are going for 100-mile rides. ... show more

  • what is advertised is not all there.
Color: Husky Plus-grey
Going to preface my comments that I have not contacted Puckipuppy. Ordered July 5th delivered on July 14th. Unfortunately, you must babysit the door for the delivery company because if you don't answer fast enough, they're gone, and they don't leave a note saying they were there. You get an email notification after the fact, so just beware you need to be vigilant. Accessories did not come -missing the following- "extensive riding kit package (containing tricycle front basket, cell phone holder, water cup holder, bike mirrors, locks, and a bike helmet) that constitutes the fully configured tricycle!" Seat has a 10mm cut on it. Upside if you didn't have tools to assemble the trike -it came with a set of wrenches and screw drivers. They aren't Snap-On quality, but they will get the job done. Instruction booklet is good, and the English instructions and pictures are adequate. Some stuff you're going to have to figure out because they don't cover it like aligning the offset handlebar stem. Trike seems to be built pretty good-but some nonstructural welds look slopy. Paint is OK. Hydraulic brakes and Shimano shifter are nice devices. Initial ride is good and comfortable-there is a learning curve for electric controls so take your time to figure it out. I took a ride in the dark, the display is nice, wish the on/off, light/horn/power assist buttons were backlit or fluorescent because you will have to feel for them if you ride in the dark-i doubt any other manufacture will do that but just and observation. ... show more
