  • Saves Time and Money
Style: 1500W+(4"+6") Auger Drill+Bag Color: 1500W+(4"+6") Auger Drill+Bag
GENERAL At first, the thought of buying an electric auger scared me. I had been renting a gas auger from a big box home improvement store to assist with digging tree wells (between 27 - 36 cubic feet each) and had shelled out a massive amount of money and figured I might as well buy an auger rather than keep renting someone else's machine. Being from California, though, my options for getting a powerful gas auger were severely limited (CA EPA regulations) and I didn't want to spend too much on an unproven auger, so after a long thought period, got this one. And I am happy I did! PROS This auger can dig. It has a little guide tip on the end that helps keep the auger bit going straight down when direct top down pressure is applied on the power head. The kit I ordered came with an extension rod, some extra pins, 4" and 6" bits, and a sturdy bag for storage. There are no more gas smells ... major plus! And the motor housing remained cool. There is a small button to press and a slightly larger one close by on the same handle that are easy to use to start the auger. The safe part of this is that if you let go of the bigger button, the motor will stop. And the biggest plus of all, this auger helped me dig a tree well in approx. 2 hours ... in soil consisting of a mix of dust, hardpan & hardened clay. See attached pics. CONS Once the auger broke through the hard pan, it zoomed downward, so I had to be careful to not let the part of the bit that was straight go down too far as it then became hard to pull out (rocking a little back and forth along with pulling straight up ... no motor on ... helped solve this concern the two times it got stuck in the dirt). TIPS There is nothing super negative I can say about this auger. It has done much better than expected and saved me tons of time! However, I would recommend being careful and not standing your legs too close ... the auger rotates counter clockwise and can pack a punch if you try to power out of a deep hole with motor on. It is best to go no deeper than the screw part of the bit without removing dirt, which should lessen the chance of getting stuck. The handle design is perfect, so I was able to lean on the grip handle to apply more pressure without having to rely solely on arm strength. Find your stance and you may save even more time. Also, I was able to wrap the power cord around the grip handle to keep it out of the way. Given the soil I am working with, I dug a 3ft x 3ft x 4 in hole and let it soak up a little water overnight. This helped control dust. ... show more

  • Plug-in, battery, or gas?
Style: 1500W+(4"+6") Auger Drill+Bag Color: 1500W+(4"+6") Auger Drill+Bag
The decision with these is whether to go with gas, battery powered, or the oddly vacant option of plug in. Hey, I get it, these are used in the yard and in the field. Power isn't always available. Well, if you have a generator, that can change things. Here's why I chose plug-in... With gas, I'm lifting the fuel and motor every time I lift it out of the hole. Every hole, every time. Plus, after a few years there's a decent chance that I'll have to figure out why the motor won't start. Will I have to mix fuel, is the fuel bad... the list goes on. Oh yeah, don't forget your hearing protection while that gas motor is screaming in your ear! With battery powered, I'm lifting the motor and the battery every time. Every hole, every time. While I do not have to worry about the concerns associated with a gas powered unit, I will have to worry about the battery going bad over time. At some point that battery will have to be replaced. Will it even be in production when that time comes? Still, the battery option is a much better option than gas, IMO. With Plug-in I have to lift the motor only. No gas or oil to deal with, no battery to charge up. Just plug it in and go. It's also quiet. At some point the motor brushes will have to be replaced. Well, there's a spare set included! I recently angered 25 holes for a project. This thing was a pleasure to run and lift when compared to the gas models I've used in the past! I've got fence to put up, a chicken coup, and some larger holes for a solar project. This is going to help me save a lot of money hiring someone else to do it and it's going to help save my back by being so light. The DOWNSIDE - It really needs reverse! If you get hung up on a root or rock, the only way to free the bit is to remove the motor and back it out by hand. This could be a major concern depending on where you're digging. "HOLY TORQUE, BATMAN!" This WILL spin you around if the bit stops! It's a mystery to me why the gas augers have a spring to help with this and these do not?! Some type of torque release system would help so much! "Pulsing" the trigger will help to alleviate the machine from tossing you around, to a degree. Conclusion, I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to the DIY'er. Note: I haven't even tried to use the bag. I read that the bits do not fit in it. I have no need for it so, I can't speak to its size or build. ... show more

  • Recommended with caution...Powerful...Be careful not to be injured...Needs reverse!!
Style: 1500W+(4"+6") Auger Drill+Bag Color: 1500W+(4"+6") Auger Drill+Bag
I agree with other reviews that the tool does a great job, but it dangerously powerful and when it hits a root it will twist and you have to fight it or let go until it stops. PIcture is of my leg a few days after using it first time. Other leg was not as bad. You get used to it, a bit. It did not show any signs of being bogged down or under-powered at all. Also agree with must reviews that it desperately needs a reverse. I searched for one with reverse but could not find another option. A big improvement might be a small vertical blade at the outer edge of the auger tip to cut roots. A one half inch root is enough to cause a problem and the horizontal bit end just moves it up or down. A vertical blade and inch or two high on the tip would likely cut off smaller roots and make the tool less likely to twist or meet resistance so easily. It came with 4 and 6 inch augers and I used an extra 8 inch auger for 6 x 6 posts. Overall, it did most 26 inch x 8 inch holes in about one minute and I have dug 7500 holes in my sign career and wish I had bought this years ago. Well worth the price to me. ... show more

  • Made our fence easy
Style: Reverse - 2×6"and 2×4" Auger Bits Color: Red
Excellent product, I don’t often write reviews, but this made our fence install easy. We used an extension and dug 4 foot holes for our 4x4 posts. The reverse came in handy several times. It was hard work but fun and I’m looking for excuses to drill more holes in my yard.

  • I used it for around 30 holes. I wish I had bought one years ago.

I love this thing. It digs holes fast. I made sure to lift it out a little every couple of inches so it doesn't get stuck . It is strong. I found it is good to hold it so the handle spins away from you incase you get bound up.
