  • first scanner under 1000 that is actually legit
I don't write reviews often, I tied the pop2 and it was immediately clear it was not going be easy to get good scans. I really wanted an einscan because the videos I saw showed it likely was a legit scanner with great software. I searched around again and happened to find that the einstar just came out, and I was skeptical that this thing would be descent as such a low price point, but I was hopeful because I knew einstars other scanners were probably really good.. but I didn't want to spend 5k to 10k for one of those. So I decided to take a chance, but only because it was prime and I could return it easily. Well, it did not take long to be very pleasantly surprised. This thing is a bargain. I mean 1k is a lot of money, but when you compare it with what is out there, this is nothing short of a breakthrough in price performance. I know I sound like I work for the company but I have nothing to do with them I am just a customer, who got way more than they were expecting, this thing is legit, and it is one of those moments in technology history where you can see a big leap in price/performance being made. A big part of it, and I cannot stress this enough, is the software. These things need to have excellent software in addition to hardware, and the einstar software is very very excellent, refreshingly so. I mean it is not just good for scanning software, it is just very slick and polished and easy to use software in general, and this is coming from me, a nerd who has worked at Microsoft for 30 years. I am overjoyed by this product, it is a revolution, a watershed moment in the world of scanning stuff. I can't wait to see what the next version brings. It is so great to get a product that is way better than your expectations.. I feel like I hope that someone at the company doesn't suddenly realize they are giving us a low prices scanner that is so good that it might cannibalize their higher prices ones, because it is almost as good, I mean it is 1/5th the price, but the resolution is not even close to 5 times worse. It is kind of like when the iPhone came out, it was a big level up in phones, it made all other phones at that price point look like amateurs. This is like the iphone of 1000 dollar scanners, it just kicked every 1k scanner out there to the curb. ... show more

  • It never worked once. It never worked once.
When I bought this scanner a year ago it was selling for $889.00 I got it to scan the inside of my boat so as that I could accurately design the complex shapes that would need to be cut to fit inside of the hull for some cabinetry I am remaking. The unit could not scan, I placed dots, it wouldn't accurately scan, I calibrated over and over, no scan, I adjusted settings, no scan, I downloaded new firmware, no scan, so I figured that my computer must be the issue. So it sat on the shelf for a few months until I bought a new computer. My new machine arrived, it cost me $4,300 has 64GB of RAM and a 4090 graphics card, it should have been able to run the scanner no problem. Still nothing. I have spent probably around 100 hours trying to get this thing to produce a good scan that I can use, IT HAS NEVER WORKED ONCE! Each time the scanner loses it's orientation and I have to start over. Tonight I became so frustrated with trying to make it work that I literally threw it at the wall as hard as I could and solved the issue permanently by destroying it. This was one of the single worst purchases I have ever made. What really makes me mad about this is an app on my 5 year old cell phone was able to do a better job, got a workable scan on my first try, and it cost me $30.00! I should also add that I am a CNC machinist with extensive CAD and CAM experience, I have used other 3D scanners, by comparison this thing was hot garbage. I cannot reiterate enough that after spending near $1000 I never got a single usable scan out of this device and it cost me over 100 hours of my time trying to make it work. Einstar is a dead brand to me. ... show more

  • This Will Certainly Require Some PRACTICE
I bought this EINSTAR scanner to work with my 3D printer. It is well built, and a good value for the money. however, it is NOT as simple as pointing it at something to scan the surface. I am still struggling to get a GOOD scan of simple shapes. I even purchased a photographic turntable to make it possible to hold the scanner steady while the subject rotates slowly in front of the scanner. I am sure it is just a matter of practice, but DO NOT expect to pull this out of the box and start scanning .stl files immediately. ... show more

  • 3D color scanner with good price and user-friendly software!
The Shining 3D Einstar is a device best used for scanning medium-to-large objects. While its small object performance and ergonomics leave a lot to be desired, it provides excellent results for those looking to get a handheld 3D scanner on the cheap. This 3D scanner features an infrared VCSEL structured light, a 0.1mm resolution, and a RGB color camera. The Einstar 3D scanner is a great option for those looking for an affordable, handheld 3D scanner. It provides good results for scanning medium-to-large objects, but it does have some limitations. The scanner is not suitable for smaller objects, has low capture detail, and is not ergonomically designed. It also has demanding system requirements. However, the device is lightweight and comes with a practical carrying case, making it easy to use and transport. All in all, the Shining 3D Einstar is a good entry-level 3D scanner, providing a good balance between price and performance. ... show more

  • Best deal for a functional scanner
This was/is the best 3d scanner you can buy for sub $1000. The software is decent and the unit scans reasonably fast. I use units at work that are roughly 80k and while this doesn't compare to them it does get you probably 70% of the way there. For a hobbyist or a maker this is the way to go.

  • Game Changer for under $1000 market
I ended up buying both the Revopoint Pop 2 and the Einstar within a week of each other to compare. My goal was automotive scans such as dashes, fenders, etc. This means wide scans of featureless areas. To put it simply the Einstar annihilated the Revopoint. Keep in mind my review is for large scan applications not miniatures or scale items where other scans will be better optimized. The first major difference I noticed was the Einstar kept track significantly better than the Revopoint, and when you do lose track you move it back to a good scan area and it'll reestablish location. This wasn't the case with the Revopoint, you had to basically go back to the last memory scan it had. Another feature I like of the Einstar is the tracking dots aren't just contrast for the scanner, it actually recognizes them as tracking dots and uses them to a much stronger extent. The Einstar also does significantly better at dark colors, semi shine surfaces and near blacks. I was amazed how much detail I could pull without scanning spray. Accuracy as far as I've measured sat around .008" which for large scans I feel is more than adequate for most engineering or design work. Overall I find the Einstar to be a solid sub $1000 champion for small shops, some R&D projects or hobbiest. The learning curve is practically a scan or two and you'll figure out most of the adjustments you'll need. This has already helped my home business with taking on new projects that prior required a lot more involvement from customers/test vehicles to measure items, now it's a scan and then design all in CAD. ... show more

  • good scans, software very difficult to use, barely 3 star
REALLY obtuse and not user friendly software. Has a lot of bugs and will crash in the middle of a scan loosing all. It takes a lot of patience and frequent use to remember the magic keys to get it to work. When you get it correct does the scans are pretty good. Some of the steps like removing markers only partially work and there are no explanations or data as why and no fix up steps. The manual is useless for the software ins and outs and the lack of in process help to navigate the large number of steps is totally lacking. The scanner is heavy, so is tiring to complete a scan. ... show more
