  • Why didn't I buy this sooner?
I have a fairly large fish aquarium (~45 gallons) and had always cleaned it with the old siphon and hose routine. Honestly, I haven't been very diligent about cleaning the tank because it was such a hassle to use the old rig and then refill the tank. My old siphon cracked so I went shopping for a new one and found this on Amazon. I got it today and can already tell I am going to be much better about cleaning the tank regularly. It is just so much more convenient than the old method that touch ups are going to be very little hassle. It is just so much more convenient not to run a hose out the front door and have to refill the tank after cleaning. The water just goes through the filter netting and right back in the tank. Getting Started ---------------- There are about 4 pieces that pretty much only fit together one way, so it is pretty straightforward. I had it put together in roughly 3 minutes including a quick skim of the instructions to make sure I was doing it right. Putting the batteries in was the trickiest part because I didn't initially notice the diagram on the battery cover which is a little hard to see if you don't have a bright light on it. Power ----- A few reviewers commented that it was underpowered, and that was my biggest hesitation at buying this. However, after using it I think it definitely has enough power. After clicking the on button a cyclone (of aquarium gunk) immediately formed in the tube and it appeared to be vacuuming at least as well as the siphon, perhaps slightly better. I THOUGHT my tank was at least somewhat clean, but this vacuum quickly cured me of that notion. I can't believe how much gunk came out of my "clean-ish" aquarium. I wonder if that old siphon system was doing anything at all judging by the bucket of sludge I pulled out of that gravel. Hint: I have an idea what might have been the problem for some who complained about the power. If you have a really dirty tank (as apparently I did) the mesh can get pretty clogged up and obstruct the flow. After I used it for a few minutes the filter bag turned black and the debris seemed to just circle in the tube at the bottom without being sucked up as well as when it started out. Once I dumped the bag and rinsed it off it went back to full power mode. This really shouldn't be an issue unless your tank is really dirty. Worst case you will probably have to stop every 10 minutes or so and clean it out, which is super easy and quick to do. Cleaning the vac ----------------- The front just snaps off and easily rinses clean under the tap. Couldn't be easier. Tip: Once I dumped a pile of gunk out of it on my kitchen floor and once I poured it out on the counter next to the sink. The placement of the drain hole is (unexpectedly) on top, not the bottom. Intuitively I thought it would be the reverse so I kept flipping it upside down without thinking about it. I guarantee you will do this at least once on accident before you get used to it. My advice is to only open the vacuum inside a bucket, outside, or over a large sink the first few times until you get used to it. It is probably a good idea to transfer it directly from the aquarium to a bucket so to catch the drips anyway. Fish Safety ----------- I have pretty big fish, so it wasn't really an issue, and you pretty much have the head down in the gravel the whole time anyway so I don't see how they would get in there. It seemed safe enough, and it also didn't seem so powerful that it would suck a fish up. It seems safe enough to me if you are using a modicum of care. Construction ------------ It seems rugged enough. I didn't feel like it was brittle like some other reviewers. If you dropped it from chest height it would probably break, but unless you are abusing it, it looks like it would hold up pretty well. I'd love to see a heavy duty version (and would even pay more), but the current model is plenty sturdy for frequent use. As other reviewers have noted, it is fairly long so you will need some overhead clearance above the tank to use it effectively, but you can also leave off one of the extension pieces if necessary to make it work in tighter quarters. Suggestions for manufacturer ---------------------------- This is a top notch product that is extremely useful and will save me tons of time. I'd love to see a PRO version of this product with either an A/C adapter or a rechargeable battery (with charging station) instead of using disposable AA batteries. With the extra power it seems like it would also be possible to enlarge vacuum tube opening that could make it quicker to get a larger tank done. No complaints about the current size, but that would make it doubly awesome. TL:DR - Definitely worth the money, 10x better than the siphon/hose method, ignore the reviewers who say it is underpowered. ... show more

  • Save an average of $1 per cleaning.
Update after two months: Still one of the best things I ever did when it comes to cleaning the fish tank. I no longer dread the task but enjoy it since it takes 15 minutes and no setup. Works great and no issues. Original Review: This unit works as good as or better than anything else I have ever used. Prior vacuum methods include siphon-style tub vac and faucet mounted venturi-vac. First what I liked and did not like about these items. Siphon vac was a pain since a 5 gallon bucket is heavy and it takes emptying and filling at least 5 times to do a 50 gal tank. The Faucet mount works great with plenty of vacuum but takes time to set up and requires filling after taking out so much water. I find that I probably do a complete water change with each vac using these methods...fish seem to be okay with it but I use well water. Also, filling requires adding hot water to keep fish from thermal shock. I use as much hot water as taking as taking a long shower to do this. So it is an energy hog using these methods. At $0.11/KwH it cost $0.71 to heat 40gal of water in a electric hot water heater, about what you use with siphon methods. That becomes $1.50 in some areas of the East Coast. So getting rid of the water consumption and heating will pay a significant amount of buying this unit...it makes up the cost between it and it's competition. All this changes with this product: Pros: - This approach filters water and places it back in the tank. No shock potential for fish. But, in the process it cannot filter the super fine (fine flour cloud size) debris and puts it back in the tank. This does not cause a problem but will make it cloudy and I am not sure if this causes any shock for fish but it has not to my fish. Clears out from filtration in a hour or so. - I find this has a vacuum level equal to the best without sucking gravel into the pump. Just the right amount. I suspect the reviews which said the vacuum was not enough had large gravel or glass that was pea size. Some of my tank has this and it does not rise up more than an inch in the column but then again it has less crevices so it cleans just as well. - The filter is a snap to clean and fast. I normally take 2 hours to do my tank with prior methods and this took 20 mins with only one filter cleaning. I cleaned a week ago so I suspect if it were a month it would take a few filter cleaning rounds of about 2 min each. - Since there is no setup one can just pick it up, clean, and stop without planning a time to do it since there is no setup and cleanup is a snap. - Not sure about battery time yet but a set of 4 rechargeable and charger would save a lot of batteries and amortize in a year. - There seem to be some fragile areas to the design. DO NOT RUN out of the water as the impeller will ride on plastic without water as a lubricant. The battery housing clip and filter removal clips look like they could break if someone was really tough on them. Not a rugged feeling as the Eheim canister filter I have. The plastic does seem to have some reinforcement compounds so it is stronger than it looks and feels. - Eheim is usually good with spare parts availability. - It is so handy that I can use it for spot cleaning without hesitation from setup and cleanup related consequences. - Saves energy from not using hot water for makeup of lost water in siphon methods. - It is submersible if you have a really deep tank. I was able to do my 50 gallon without getting my hands wet in the tank using the supplied extension which I think is mandatory in most uses. Cons: None yet. On-off has both momentary and sustained operation and it is not obvious in the beginning and takes practice to get the feel. Design Wishes and Notes: - Would be nicer if there was a wireless rechargeable pack option that did not require opening the battery compartment like a Sonicare toothbrush. That could also be a holder like a flashlight bracket. - A tighter fit between armature and stator of the pump impeller so it had no rattle. I would have also included some sort of magnetic repelling bushing in the pump to keep the impeller from touching the plastic vacuum entrance port, a rubber pad, or a centering post supported by cross members that would also block gravel. However, the last of these approaches might prevent long turds from getting macerated by the impeller and block the entrance. - Put some silicon grease on the sealing ring for the batteries. If you submerge it then after finishing I would check for any moisture in the battery compartment to stay on the safe side. Mine did not leak but the grease would assure that if used. Replace the o ring if it leaks or get a larger diameter one at an auto parts store (even though it might be the wrong rubber) - Not obvious put you press on the area with the slits on each side just below the locking tab on the battery compartment to open it and not try pushing the locking tab in. I bought this from Amazon for $39.99 using Prime figuring it would be a risk purchase. I would gladly have paid full price now that I have it. And I would pay more if it had the additional features I have mentioned. ... show more

  • No Suction after just 4 days!
at first I was very happy - did a great job on a 65 gal tank with some 7 inch oscars. Suction was very good. Next day I tried on another 65 gal Ram tank, and suction was weak and barely picking up waste from bottom. 3rd day tired on a 220 gal cichlid tank, and got zero suction. Could not even vacuum tiny waste. I changed the batteries although I only used it for 30 minutes in total. Then tried on a 300 gallon tank, and it was 100% worthless. Almost zero suction. I took it apart and cleaned it, but still, could not pick up anything. I would return it but I used it for 4 days, so I am out about $70. Don't buy it. Reports of suction getting weaker over time are true, but for me it was just days. ... show more
