I am building a deck and planning to move a couple hundred feet of aluminum fencing. I wanted the auger to help with the footers for the deck project. For my footers I used a 12" sonotube so the auger was a bit too small at 8". But getting down 24-30" with an 8 inch hole and widening with a shovel was a tremendous time saver. Assembly took 10-15 minutes. Easy. The auger is insanely quiet. You could easily use this on an early Sunday morning and not disturb neighbors. Even if you live in a community where houses are 8' apart and you can smell each others farts. It's just as strong as gas and even better. The torque is instant. I powered through sandy and clay soil with rocks and roots. In the sandy soil I had a 28" deep hole in 15 seconds. Clay was maybe 25-30 seconds. It tears through the ground with ease. In heavier soil its best to go down a little and pull out to remove material. Sandy soil you can get down a lot before extracting. It does have anti kickback. If you haven't used an auger before they can kick very hard if you hit something solid. You still get a kick with this but it shuts down immediately which makes it very safe. I hit some roots which did this, but you just back it up a bit and go through again until it tears through. Reverse is great. Getting down into deep compacted soil it can get stuck so reverse will pull it back up and you go back in again. This machine is heavy with the battery and auger bit installed. This would be a challenge to use if you are older or have mobility issues. Its tall so you need good upper body strength including shoulders and traps. If you disconnect the auger bit and battery it makes it a lot more manageable to get the your job site. The auger disconnects with a single pin so thats easy to do. Heres the deal. Just like all battery vs gas items, battery is more expensive. You can buy a gas auger at Harbor Freight for way less money. But then you have to deal with gas, noise, smell. If you already in the ego ecosystem and want an auger this is a no brainer. I have several large batteries since I own the zero turn so I bought the bare tool. You can typically find deals on batteries so I typically buy bare tools only. Im glad they offer it like this. My next project with this is moving a couple hundred feet of aluminum fence. Those were set in concrete with maybe a 4" hole. I plan to remove all the posts and reuse with an 8" hole and concrete. This should make removal again in the future super fun for the next owner. Aluminum posts are crazy expensive and I don't feel like buying dozens more. With this auger digging holes is easy and concrete is cheap so why not? $350 is pricey for a specialty use tool, but my time is valuable so in the end its worth it for me. You can achieve the same thing with a post hole digger but I enjoy keeping my back pain free.

I only wish I had known about this EGO auger years ago. No more mixing 2cycle fuel No more ear splitting noise No more draining the fuel tank when not in use No more hard starting! This powerful beast is truly a joy to use! It drilled down into my hard black clay like it was nothing, and sooo fast. I drilled 3 holes in less than 30 seconds! It has 2 speed settings, but within each setting the speed can further be controlled by the trigger. It also has a reverse speed to back you out of your hole. Did I say I’m in love with this machine? Oh yea. I love it

I had a few post holes to dig and tried to start my old gas post hole machine. Needless to say it wouldn’t start and so since I have many EGO products and I saw this I pounced . Like all EGO products, It is easy to use and really works well (watch the big rocks tree roots and hidden pipes). It works with my existing battery assortment so no extra cost there. It has a tremendous amount of torque so you have be careful. You can get extensions for the bit if you want to dig to china but if you are an ice fisherman they have an ice auger that works with the head! Like all EGO products it is well built , and even has a reverse feature that I never had with the gas machine. This comes in handy when you hit that unseen obstruction and reversing makes it easy to untangl .

Worked great for fence posts. Quiet and easy! I only took one star off because the auger bit almost didn't fit into the drive shaft on the top of the unit. I had to use WD40 and absolutely slam it down multiple times on an old brick to jam it into the unit. I doubt I could ever get it out it's so tight. I don't need to or plan on changing bits, but it's a shame it wasn't machined correctly.

Once again Ego has knocked it out of the park. I have several augers from a 12" pto driven unit to the gas powered 2 man units. This electric unit has plenty of torque to dig in this GA. clay that has plenty of rocks and roots. The option to reverse direction is a game changer. plenty of battery life, quality, ease of cleaning definitely equal value.

This thing is great - an absolute no-brainer if you're already in the Ego universe with other equipment (and can easily share batteries), after just a bit of practice you'll learn how to wrangle this bad boy (don't be shy to get your hips into it once you pull the trigger and it starts spinning) and will quickly power through whatever holes you need to create. If you need a one man auger I'd recommend this one for sure - just be ready to be tempted to want to switch over all of your various tools to Ego (mower, chainsaw, blower, trimmer etc etc)!
