I am building a deck and planning to move a couple hundred feet of aluminum fencing. I wanted the auger to help with the footers for the deck project. For my footers I used a 12" sonotube so the auger was a bit too small at 8". But getting down 24-30" with an 8 inch hole and widening with a shovel was a tremendous time saver. Assembly took 10-15 minutes. Easy. The auger is insanely quiet. You could easily use this on an early Sunday morning and not disturb neighbors. Even if you live in a community where houses are 8' apart and you can smell each others farts. It's just as strong as gas and even better. The torque is instant. I powered through sandy and clay soil with rocks and roots. In the sandy soil I had a 28" deep hole in 15 seconds. Clay was maybe 25-30 seconds. It tears through the ground with ease. In heavier soil its best to go down a little and pull out to remove material. Sandy soil you can get down a lot before extracting. It does have anti kickback. If you haven't used an auger before they can kick very hard if you hit something solid. You still get a kick with this but it shuts down immediately which makes it very safe. I hit some roots which did this, but you just back it up a bit and go through again until it tears through. Reverse is great. Getting down into deep compacted soil it can get stuck so reverse will pull it back up and you go back in again. This machine is heavy with the battery and auger bit installed. This would be a challenge to use if you are older or have mobility issues. Its tall so you need good upper body strength including shoulders and traps. If you disconnect the auger bit and battery it makes it a lot more manageable to get the your job site. The auger disconnects with a single pin so thats easy to do. Heres the deal. Just like all battery vs gas items, battery is more expensive. You can buy a gas auger at Harbor Freight for way less money. But then you have to deal with gas, noise, smell. If you already in the ego ecosystem and want an auger this is a no brainer. I have several large batteries since I own the zero turn so I bought the bare tool. You can typically find deals on batteries so I typically buy bare tools only. Im glad they offer it like this. My next project with this is moving a couple hundred feet of aluminum fence. Those were set in concrete with maybe a 4" hole. I plan to remove all the posts and reuse with an 8" hole and concrete. This should make removal again in the future super fun for the next owner. Aluminum posts are crazy expensive and I don't feel like buying dozens more. With this auger digging holes is easy and concrete is cheap so why not? $350 is pricey for a specialty use tool, but my time is valuable so in the end its worth it for me. You can achieve the same thing with a post hole digger but I enjoy keeping my back pain free.

Total beast. It tears through rocky soil and clay like nothing. Good on battery life. I will repeat other people's warning... this thing kicks like a mule when it hits something truly hard so be prepared for that. One other comment -- finding smaller approved augers is difficult but not impossible. Alexa cautioned me to only use EGO branded augers but Amazon does not have them right now. I found the 4 inch auger I needed at a large hardware chain's website.

Great post hole digger. Eight inch Auger is larger than I need and I’ll be looking for a four inch in the future. But, even with the eight inch auger, this machine is fantastic.

This baby is crazy powerful and if you’re looking for something to drill baby drill in the dirt, this is gonna be your new best friend. As a middle-aged woman, I absolutely love every single EGO tool I’ve used. The only reason why I gave this four out of five stars, is that if you have a lot of larger roots where you are digging - there is quite a kickback from the auger when that happens. It ended up messing up my husband‘s back for a week so you have to be a little careful. Also, as a woman who weighs around 133 pounds, I sometimes found that I wasn’t heavy enough to really push the drill down into the dirt if there was a lot of roots. Even with those two caveats, it still was incredibly useful for a major landscaping project where we probably had to plant over 100 trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Shockingly good, I live in Western Maryland with very rocky soil and this has worked very well. One caution to use in rocky spil is to brace with your left hip to avoid the very solid nut punch when it hooks on a rock. Wish the hoops on the person side were 4 inches longer to force the impact into your hip. Battery life is impressive and using a 4 inch auger to plant 4x4 posts works great if you have a Skidsteer to press them home. Used the 8 inch auger to plant some trees and it worked great.

This thing is a beast, like most say- it is heavy… but it’s honestly a good thing because it would be difficult to push this into rough Oklahoma ground if it was lighter. It tears through just about anything including compacted gravel which I had to install fence post in.
