  • Beautiful, best suited for chicken eggs, and select environments
This is a beautiful incubator, and it actually comes in branded pretty packaging which is nice to have to store it in during the off season. But my first concern/annoyance is that with this type and this one even says on the packaging 'Do not throw away foam insert" - because you need them for temperature regulation and this one didn't have a full Styrofoam cover, just a few pieces on the edges to keep it from slipping around in the box - which means unless you have this in a 75+ degree room it will have a hard time keeping a steady temp. I have used/tested a lot over table top incubators ( Over 25 at this point) and typically can figure them out without looking at the instructions - but not this one, the double decker stacking had me confused but it was easy enough after seeing the directions. It would be nice if this came with additional sized turning trays, it seems to bee tall enough for emu eggs- but I would have to cut a tray to accommodate them since the racks are only chicken sized - and on the smaller size at that, I am not sure if some of my duck eggs would even fit in here. So keep that in mind if you are hatching things other than chickens! The watering system is also interesting, there are grey plastic trays you remove when the incubator is open and you add the water directly in there, and then it auto siphons it to a sponge as needed to reach a proper humidity. I am not crazy about the side port for adding "emergency water" as it is labeled, because more often than not it just creates a leak point and dumps water all over your floor or table. Unfortunately though there is not a good wat to circumvent using it part of the way through the hatch unless you take both trays off and then remove the cover to add more water. Not the worst thing, but definitely annoying and it jostles the eggs trying to line it back up when you are reassembling. Overall if you are in a warm and humid climate - this would be a great option, especially since it doesn't take up a bunch of space and you can incubate 48 eggs in one go. ( Or stagger your eggs and do one layer and then start the other layer later on since you can lock down each tray independently- out side of the humidity aspect but I have been dry hatching including lock down for the last year or so and have had good results, and the humidity will naturally raise once they start hatching anyway). This is a beautiful incubator and it has so much clear you really have a great view of the little guys hatching ( which is the best part)! ... show more

  • Great features & as automatic as it gets
We hatch and raise about a hundred Rhode Island Reds, a couple dozen Muscovy and a couple dozen Pekin ducks, a couple dozen Emden geese, and half a hundred French Guineas. We use a mix of incubators that includes a GQF Sportsman that'll hold up to 270 chicken eggs, a 100 year old redwood cabinet with manual turning screens that'll hold 288, a pair of old Lyons/Marsh Roll-X units that have been our go to units, and a pair of Little Giants with auto turners & fans, so that's my bias. I love the results with the Roll-X, and the GQF is a close second. The antique cabinet does okay, but it's a lot of fiddly stuff and misery to clean, and the Little Giants are my least favorite, but at least they're somewhat energy efficient (being made of Stryrofoam, they should be). The Roll-X are only going to keep getting harder to impossible to get parts for, so I figured we'd try one of these newer Chinese efforts out. I mean they do raise more chickens than any other country on earth, so they ought'a know what they're doing. I do like the space efficiency of this design, but I can't find parts or accessory trays anywhere, so that's not good. Probably a candidate for some 3D printed adapters or something if we decide to do some quail eggs, because the included trays look like they may not be the best for eggs that small. Also going to be interesting to see if and how it handles the geese eggs, but for right now we're just running some chickens to get acquainted with it. Checking the initial temperature is critical, as ours was 7 degrees F. out of whack. Calibration brought it into line, so make sure you check yours against a good quality control device. Humidity control was timely and acceptable, which was very nice. I appreciate all of the digital gizmos, but we keep all of our hatching in a room that doubles as an indoor hydroponic kitchen garden, so the ambient temperature and humidity there stays pretty close to 72 degrees F. and 65% RH. While plastics are generally resistant to thermal transfer, an good insulator it is not. The suggestion to retain the packing foam does help, but I foil taped several foam boxes for the Roll-X units and one of those fit over this easily. I also installed a remote thermometer and hygrometer that use a phone app to keep me apprised of any errant environmental changes, so I'm hopeful this will all continue to play well together and lower the hatching stress. So far so good. The built-in candler is a nice touch, as is the count down feature, and I do appreciate the variability afforded with the custom settings. My old Roll-X units are jokingly said to be able to hatch rocks. If this unit proves only half as productive I'll consider it a win. I may also mod the fill port eventually, but for now we're going to ride with the stock design. The foam box also helps quiet down the fan noise, not that that's a problem whete we have ours running, but for some folks it might be a little annoying. Overall my initial take is that this is a pretty smart value for just about anybody raising just a few birds up to maybe running a small egg business in their backyard. We regularly replace our laying hens after their first season, so we'll be keeping this thing busy as long as it continues to work right. Thus far everything looks good. ... show more
