I have owned my Ecobee thermostat and the original sensor for almost a year now. I LOVE them. The technology is fantastic and was quite easily able to create my account and to use the website access and the app on my iOS devices to control my system with ease. The programming is excellent, and by adding room sensors I am able to make the best of a single-zone system in hot Florida. I bought two of the new sensors a little over a month ago. Wheras I have only had to change one of the batteries in the six sensors from the previous generation in the months since I bought them (over 8 for all of them), I just had to replace the battery on one of the new generation sensors after six weeks! I am NOT happy about that. Not only was battery life not great (probably because I am using this one in a high-traffic area) the choice to use a CR2477 battery is silly. Maybe it has longer life, but, unlike the CR2032s that are easily found in any store that sells batteries, the 2477s are hard to get so I had to order online. This is silly and impractical. Having the systems continue to use the standard 2032 would have been a superior idea, even if it does not offer the same length of service as the 2477. Easy replacement should have been considered in this design. I am very disappointed that it was not. ... show more

The concept is pretty simple. The Ecobee thermostat simply sees the inside temperature as the average of all of your sensors, then runs the HVAC until the setpoint is reached, based on the average of the sensors, not just the sensor inside the thermostat. Sounds simple, right? However they are amazing in action. I have a 1-level ranch home about 1,700 square feet. The "right" 1/3rd of my home stays about 5 degrees F warmer than the rest of the home when it is hot outside. I added two sensors to that part of the home and an hour later, the temperature difference in my home was 1 degree F. See the uploaded photo. Update: I should have pointed out that most homes need to have the register dampener opened or closed the correct amount to control air flow, and thus temperature where the register is. Registers closest to the fan have much more air flow. I have moved my sensors a couple of times and adjusted flow-rate of registers a couple of times. With tweaking, my home is typically within 1 degree F across all sensors. And yes, getting it right did allow me to increase my a/c set point from 71 to 73 for the same level of comfort. ... show more

The SmartSensor2 is a defective product that DRAINS the batteries like mad!! I bought a two pack, the first one DIED after 6 days. Replaced the battery, and died again after another week. I had to replace the battery THREE TIMES on one of the sensors over the course of a month. The other sensor I had two replace TWICE after just two months. They release a GARBAGE product thats severely defective. SmartSensor one never had any battery issues and could at least last a year, this junk will cost you 100s of batteries a year. Many people have reported that the batteries in these new “Smart Sensors” die quickly. The batteries in the two sensors I purchased died within 3 days, and the sensors disconnected from the paired thermostat. Many people have reported this happening with the new version of the Ecobee Smart Sensor. The manufacturer diagnosed my Smart Sensors as defective after I reported this to Ecobee, but they are unable to ship replacements under the warranty right now. ... show more

These units are smaller than I expected, which is good. Each is about the area of a matchbook. The best devices are those that do their jobs without being noticed. It took longer to open the box than to pair the units to my Ecobee app. Pull a battery tab, scan the QR code, choose some settings, and done. My only word of advice is to let the units reach room temperature before pairing them. Mine arrived on a hot day and both units reported room temperatures of 85F despite the air really being 74F. This cycled the AC longer than was needed, at first. I purchased these to more evenly heat/cool my 2,200 sqft house. The upstairs bedrooms tend to differ about 5-6 degrees from the main floor. ... show more

UPDATE: 2/2021 The replaced smart sensor has continued to function on its original battery for 18 months now, which is a significant improvement over the generation 1 sensor. I can now recommend without hesitation and have ungraded my rating accordingly. UPDATE: Contacted Ecobee about the dead battery and they determined the sensor itself was bad by accessing it remotely. They sent a new one and once I have had it installed a while to see if it lasts, I’ll update my provisional 2 star rating. Good customer service at least. Original review: I bought the new Smart Sensor to pair with my ecobee 4 thermostat because the old sensors batteries only last a few months and I’m tired of changing them. Well about a week after I added them I get a notification from my ecobee system that my battery is running low, then another shortly after that the sensor battery has died. These sensors were just released (I preordered them on Amazon) so the batteries should theoretically be fresh, although who knows when they were manufactured I suppose. Since ecobee advertises the longer battery life, I’m disappointed to say the least, in their quality control if nothing else. I’ll drop a new battery in it, sigh, and see if it performs better than the old ones, so my 2 star rating is provisional and it will take some to to prove its worth. ... show more
