  • Crude but works, though probably not for someone new to sewing
Size: Shoe Mending Machine
This is a crude version of an 1870's Bradbury A1 Repairer...emphasis on crude. Many parts look like they were handmade and they are loosely fitted and poorly finished, lots of metal-on-metal pieces rubbing against each other. The machine does work though, and for the price it can't be beat. I stripped mine completely and cleaned all the shipping dirt and oil from it and lubed it properly (I highly recommend this). Some familiarity with sewing machines, as well as some mechanical aptitude, is best for someone contemplating this machine. I did not have any expectations that this would be an industrial-quality, high-volume production machine, but rather I hoped it would suffice for occasionally stitching two or three layers of medium to heavy thickness of leather. The test pieces that I've attempted so far have been satisfactory so it appears to meet my hopes. The bobbin winder is useless, I will wind mine using my drill press. I replaced some of the adjustment nuts and screws with knobs to make stitch length and upper thread tension easier to adjust. ... show more

  • With some elbow grease this can be a great budget machine
Size: Shoe Mending Machine
Like mentioned the packaging this machine comes in is terrible. I thought I broke my toe when I lifted the sewing part out and the flywheel fell out from it. All is well though. I can say right from the start, just plan on taking the bare machine outside and spraying it down with some break clean to get all the oil residue off that covers everything. I also took this opportunity to use a flap wheel on my grinder to clean up some nasty casting flash, smooth the sharp machined edges on the flywheel and round some of the cam lever arms a little better. Not a completely neccessary step but it made the machine nicer to use. The same could be done with a dremel or files and some more time. After that I wiped it off and cleaned up the shiny parts with some fine steel wool. Those steps made it look a whole lot better. The next step is setting the machine up for use. Plan on buying some leather needles. The one in the machine was broken from the start. Not a big deal, they are not to much and you should have spares anyway. I did wipe down the bobbin parts and smooth some sharp edges to make sure they moved smoothly. I am not sure how they sewed the leather scrapthat came with it because my machine needles depth was completely out. Fully extended it did not even go into the base. After adjusting that so it just touched my finger through the bottom of the machine and setting the tension it started sewing nicely. Adjusting the needle depth is easy with a flat head screwdriver. For some video help "mainely acres" has a great searchable video on how to set these machines up. After about an hour of two of cleaning and set up I was sewing away on leather and thick materials easily. Just to play I folded some finished scrap leather I had over 8 times, almost a half inch thick and it sewed it just fine. With some elbow grease this can be a great budget machine the average person can afford. Overall I am very happy I could get this diamond in the rough working great. ... show more

  • Excellent sewing machine
Size: Shoe Mending Machine
Excellent sewing machine. I was trying to transition my leather working craft into a small business but didn't want to drop a grand on other leather sewing machines. This sewing machine was a great find and is phenomenal for sewing just about anything I throw at it! It did a great job sewing 2 pieces of 3-4 ounce leather. I can't imagine it struggling with 2 pieces of 6-7 ounce leather with how it worked for me. You'll need to file down where the walking foot hits the leather because it will gouge your work right out of the box but other than that it's perfect. See youtube videos on how to thread it right. Buy this sewing machine - you won't regret it. Update: It stopped working after several weeks of use and I was never able to fix it unfortunately. I ultimately ended up throwing it away and going back to hand sewing. Would not recommend this product. Go ahead and buy the expensive sewing machine if you want to work with leather - it’s not worth the headache of buying this machine. ... show more

  • Great product
Size: Shoe Mending Machine
Best money I’ve spent in a long time on my leather business. This company sent my machine quickly. The styrofoam from China it shipped in is a mess, so have a vacuum ready. Oil it well and watch a few videos. Once you get the tension right it will sew everything from saddle skirting to wallet inserts. Pic attached is done with this machine from scratch ... show more

  • Yes, its real, not a toy
Size: Shoe Mending Machine
Made in China, the finishings are quite rough, and you'll need to watch some YouTube videos regarding what spots to oil, what spots to file down a little bit, but all in all it does what it says it will. I've had three layers of fairly heavy holster leather running through it, and it didn't even break a sweat. It comes with three legs , which are a little ridiculous, unless you're a street busker . I've bolted mine to a table . It will come heavily oiled in its packaging, to prevent rust on Route, and that will need to be cleaned off. If you want, there is another version of this you can get at Tandy, but it's a $1,000 more. I'm quite happy with this item ... show more

This machine is as described but very difficult to figure out. The directions are unusable. I got as far as you tube videos could get me and I found some very good ones. I bought an excellent singer computerized machine for $100 more than this one and it easily sews leather. I'm taking this to a flea market in Amish land. ... show more
