  • One of the all-time best rods under $400
Size: 7'6", 3wt, 4pc
I recommended this rod all the time. The way this rod feels and casts can compete with some of the most expensive rods on the market. I know multiple people with this rod and they all love it. I have many name brand rods and decades of experience casting those with a multitude of different types of fly line. I only say this because of how impressed I was when I picked up the Echo Ion XL for the first time and to my satisfaction (and a little dismay) it cast as well as some of my much more expensive rods. That said, I very honestly do think that this is one of the best casting fly rods for under $400. There are even some rods in the 600+ range that wouldn't out-compete the Ion XL. One of those is sitting next to me, ready to be listed for sale now that I have an Ion XL on the way to replace it. It has a great all-round feel. The power is there if you want to throw streamers, but it has such a light versatile feel to it that you'll be wanting to use it for multiple applications. I personally have the most experience with the 9ft 7wt and 6wt. I like using an SA Titan Long or Sonar Titan for streamer fishing or something like a Rio gold for more delicate presentations. It is well rounded with just the right amount of speed and power, but plenty of "feel" to get a good sense of rod load and the ability to have fun playing a fish. Therefore, you wouldn't necessarily need one of those 'over-lined' fly lines, but they do cast like a dream with this rod, especially if you are incorporating the double-haul into your cast (but that's true of almost any setup... go learn to double haul if you haven't) Echo has an outstanding warranty and servicing policy should anything go wrong. I want to talk about cork for a second. This rod doesn't have perfect cork and you shouldn't expect it to. This is partially due to the price, but also due to the fact that true AAA(+) cork is very hard to come by, and very expensive... so you shouldn't even expect to have cork without filler for this kind of deal, or any other rod even close to this price range. Anyway, it's not much of an issue since a little cork filler goes un-noticed by most. The only time it can be annoying is if there is a little filler right at the end of a full wells grip on that sharp angle where it gets a lot of use right on the edge, and may crumble over time. (only the higher range of rod weights have a full wells grip) This whole cork rant goes for pretty much every manufacturer and is not specific to this product, but something to keep in mind when you're shopping for a good value fly rod. If you want absolute best of the best cork you're going to have to get a custom fly rod made for yourself, or pay many times more $$$. bottom line. Get this rod. You won't be disappointed. ... show more

  • Happy with the purchase
Size: 9'0", 5wt, 4pc
I was really on the fence with this decision. I needed to upgrade my current 5wt fly pole and reel but didn't want to spend much over $300. My 5wt gets the least use but still wanted a set up that was solid. I have used some great fly poles over the years and had some idea what to get. I was not familiar with Echo Carbon and did a lot of research along with talking to someone who had one. I have landed brooks, browns, smallmouth, pike and lost a few lager salmon. This pole has done well. Enough backbone for a fighting chance at bigger fish while still being a real good choice for brooks and browns. This pole looks and feels like a more expensive option but isn't. Has a lifetime warranty. ... show more

  • Good value
Size: 9'0", 5wt, 4pc
Ordered the 9' 5wt. The rod arrived in less than two days. The rod was not especially packaged well. . . . rod tube was able to bounce around in the box. The rod, however, showed no signs of damage. The rod appears to be fairly well built. . . . epoxy well applied to the stripper and single foot snake guides. One snake guide was misaligned very slightly, certainly not enough to be returned or worry about. I have not had it on the water but did spend a couple hours with it in the park. It casts quite nicely with a 5 WF line and is fairly light in the hand. I have to say that it nearly casts as well as some of my rods that cost far more. I believe it to be a great value for the money. ... show more

  • Excellent rod. Price is good.
Size: 9'0", 5wt, 4pc
Great rod. Casts really nice. Good price. Very fishy. Always keep your rod tip up while walking or wading. Should last for many years. Great warranty even if you should beak it. ( I'm hard on equipment. So this is portant to me)

  • It Works!
Size: 9'0", 5wt, 4pc
I am not a "Top End" buyer,... that said, I couldn't be happier with this purchase. I'm a recreational fly fisherman and this is the best rod I've owned. Ever. Now that I am retired I look forward to many more happy days on the water! Very pleased.

  • Crisp rod!
Size: 9'0", 5wt, 4pc
From my "seasoned amateur" opinion this rod feels like it casts more on the faster side of moderate fast but with that being said this rod is awesome for the price. With a little adjustment in technique this rod will easily pull double or triple duty.

  • Top value at a great price - Go ECHO
Size: 7'3", 2wt, 4pc
I purchased a 5wt Carbon XL months ago and have enjoyed it so much that I also purchase this 2wt. The action and feel are excellent on both, especially at this price point. Took it out fishing for native brookie here in Va. Very pleased. ECHO really does a great job serving up function and form. Tim and Co. knows fishing! It’s hard not to find a rod to fit a need. ... show more
