    • Very effective
This type mute really puts a damper on the sound. Volume goes down and scratchiness is eliminated. In a family setting, the mute should make it easier for everyone involved to tolerate the sounds of a beginning violinist. Another use: if musicians are trying to play together at a low volume (perhaps in a small room) the mute works to tone down the violinist/fiddler player. There's another type mute that makes less difference. I sometimes use the other kind as well, but nothing beats this type for really cutting down on the volume. I am a beginner and love that this little device makes it easier to learn. I am less self conscious of the horrid noises I sometimes produce due to their muted quality. It's a great investment for a beginner and can give a better sound quality to a lower quality instrument.

    • Reduces volume AND screeching
The media could not be loaded. This mute works great! It makes my practicing more pleasant to listen to because it's not as loud and you can't hear the mistakes and screeching. It's really cheap, too, and the material doesn't harm the bridge. The mute does have a rubber smell, but it's really not a big deal. It'll probably fade after a while. In the attached video, I play an exerpt without the mute and then WITH the mute. Keep in mind that the video quality is not the greatest, contributing to bad violin sound. This mute was the difference between my family disliking to hear me practice to wondering if a CD was playing. As the player, I liked it quieter, as my mistake as a beginner we're not so loud in my ear.
