I have to be honest, when I first got this gate, I hated it with a passion. We had a new born and I had THE most difficult time opening/closing it with one hand. Now I’m chalking that frustration up to sleep deprivation and new parenthood making me lose my common sense. I now recommend this gate to absolutely everyone. My mother’s got two at her place, I’ve got two at mine and I finally just got my brother one. If you’re renting, make sure you landlord is cool with holes/agrees to letting you patch them, because this DOES mount to the wall. Install is a little tricky. The video we watched on our first one felt like it over complicated things, but it’s easiest with two people. I thought about trying to describe the install process here, but I only succeeded in confusing myself - YouTube is your friend here. Install complications aside, I love it. It’s not clunky like the swinging gates are, and it’s sleek/skinny enough to not feel like it’s in the way. I think that’s the thing I love most - it doesn’t feel like we have baby gates up all over the house, but they’re there and they’re reliable/durable. My 18 month old has tried desperately to get through them, but when they’re locked, they don’t move. They’re great at keeping my dogs and kid where I want them. My one piece of advice is that if you’re not mounting into a stud, and you have a monster that will regularly try to get through it, or you have a feeling the gate might get beat on, use drywall anchors. ... show more

My husband and I have been putting off getting gates for the house because we hate how fast they all are and that you have to walk through a smaller opening when you use them. Not with these! You have full utilization of the space where the gate is when it's closed since it fully retracts. When we don't need them open, it's like they're not even there! The size is perfect to keep back our 70 pound Airedale terrier so guests can enter our home without fear of being excitedly jumped on. My husband installed two of them in less than an hour. After using them for 2 weeks and opening and closing them both quite often, they are holding up great. Zero complaints! If you're thinking about it, just go for it! ... show more

Bought this to install at my parents house so that when my daughter is at their house she is safe from the stairs. It was fairly easy to put together. I have no problem latching / unlatching, but some of my family members do. I don't know if that's a product issue or a human issue. One thing I'm not a huge fan of is the locking mechanism. Gate works great. We’ll built, easy to use, but requires two hands. Was installed to prevent grandson from eating it down the stairs to the basement. Way easy to install with templates, did require longer screws then provided when spacers were used as we have thicker base boards so the top had to be shimmed. So far so good, will update if anything else comes up. Also nice they provide two mounting kits as it would l Allow us to move gate if needed. ... show more

This product is in daily use! This gate keeps my 18 month old downstairs and my 2 dogs upstairs. It’s ease of use makes its home at the bottom of the stairs perfect. I don’t have to worry about not being able to open and close it in a hurry if needed, and because it’s so easy to use I know my family will be able to open and close it if necessary. This works well to keep our 13 month old from climbing the steep stairs when we are spending time in our basement. For us this is great for occasional use - it is not a replacement for a rigid, swinging gate - we have one of those upstairs since we open and close that one constantly. So this gate is really great overall. The set up and installation was clear and one MAJOR bonus was that it comes with an extra set of mounts. This was great for us because we can easily move it between top or bottom of stairs as needed. Extremely convenient. The locking mechanism is solid and I know I won't have to worry about my children opening. It should be noted, this is not a hard gate. While it is sturdy material, I wouldn't recommend allowing kids to lean on, hold on to, hit, etc. One tiny flaw: the included wall anchors. They are really flimsy, and I was surprised that for a protective gate, they wouldn't think to include even slightly stronger ones. Just a few hammer hits to the anchor in a snug hole will bend it. They are usable, but harder to install in wood or steel (which might be common areas if you put by stairs). I had extra plastic anchors in my toolbox that did the job just fine. If you have extra anchors or are willing to spend $2 at a home improvement store, I'd recommend doing so. Basic handy skills are recommended, and if you can workaround the flimsy anchors, I highly recommend the gate. ... show more
