  • Perfect solution for mobility needs.
Although I’m a relatively healthy and active 70+ year old, I have severe back pain and mobility challenges that limit me to short walks. Our family wanted to celebrate out 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to a smoky mountain cabin. Knowing our activities would include lots of outdoor activities (lots of walking) I decided to look into purchasing a folding motorized wheelchair so I could keep up with everyone and independently scoot around at my leisure. A quick Amazon search offered a wide variety of products from which to choose. I quickly realized I’d need to identify my top features and try to find a product to match. What were the features that meant most to me? 1. Electric powered. I did not want my wife (or anyone else) to have to put effort into pushing me from point A to B. 2. Compact size. The item needed to take up as little space as possible and fit inside our Nissan Rogue. A foldable unit made a lot of sense and that feature became a “must have”. 3. Adequate Power. Many powered wheelchairs had dual rear motors rated from 150 watts to 300 watts. That equals 300 to 600 total watts of power. More watts equals more power! I decided that at my height (6’) and weight (210 lbs) it would be wise to opt for the most power offered. 4. A reputable manufacturer. A lot of products had names that I was not at all familiar with. The Rubicon brand stood out as an established American company with what appeared to be very favorable reviews from users. 5. Lithium Batteries. For this size of equipment and power needs, a lithium power source seems to be a great match. Recharging with the included charging unit should be quick, safe and effective. 6. Overall Comfort and a Robust Product. Something that should last a good long while. The padding on the seat and back are quite comfortable allowing for hours of use without fatigue to the user. No creaking or flexing or weakness in construction of the unit. 7. Cost. Yikes! Some of these units can be quite pricey. Yes, you generally get what you pay for, but being retired, we spend conservatively. 8. Weight. Important, but not a highly deciding factor. So with those eight features as my guide, I selected to purchase the Rubicon 14, and have had no regrets. I bought from a company in California and they offered free shipping to my location. It showed up nicely boxed and carefully and protectively packaged. Unboxing was uneventful and actually fun. I set it up in our living room where I had plenty of room to work. I decided that since they shipped an included tool pouch with a handful of tools to check all the obvious bolt and screw tightness. I was pleasantly surprised when there was only 1 or 2 items that needed just a smidge more tightening! So, to review my list of requirements… 1. Electric Power. This folding powered wheelchair comes with dual 300 watt electric motors which provide plenty of power to propel this chair and occupant comfortably around standard surfaces. I really like the feature of the lever on each motor which allows you to manually roll the chair if desired. That has come in handy several times and especially when loading and unloading from my ramped carrier on the back of my vehicle. 2. Compact Size. Goes through standard doorways with room to spare. Folds up and stands in our guest room awaiting use. Folds and slips nicely into the back of our car. (See photo.) 3. Adequate Power. Carried me (and later, my wife) up and down paved trails in the mountains and on sidewalks and streets in town with plenty of power. Gear selection (or speed) makes a difference so play around with controls to see what works best for you. 4. A Reputable manufacturer. Rubicon stands behind their products no matter where you purchase yours from. It comes with a standard warranty and parts for your chair are available directly from Rubicon. Replace a motor. Replace a wheel. Most parts can be replaced if you have any mechanical ability. I have not had any issues with my chair so have not needed to contact the company. 5. Lithium Batteries. YES! These hold a charge for the day and recharge quickly. It’s nice to have the option to recharge in the chair or outside of the chair. On this trip I brought the batteries inside our rental and recharged in our bedroom, leaving the chair in our vehicle overnight. 6. Overall Comfort and a Robust Product. In my experience with my Rubicon chair, I have been seriously impressed with the quality of the design, build and operation. This chair is SOLID! Once opened, it locks in place, and that gives you a very stable platform from which to operate. It’s quiet. Yes, you can hear it run, but in my experience with powered wheelchairs, the Rubicon operates quietly and solidly. It does have an electronic horn that has come in handy a few times. This solid product does come at the price of a few more pounds, but I’ve checked comparable units and they weigh in at very similar weights. Mine is around 65 lbs including 2 batteries and small tool kit I keep in the under seat pouch. Hard to lift into my car, but I solved that issue with a set of light weight aluminum ramps. Game changer. 7. Cost. My purchase came to around $1,200 including free shipping. I discovered the next day that I could have saved $200 by buying it directly from Rubicon. Rats! No regrets. I saved several hundred dollars when I chose this unit over several other similar products I have researched online. 8. Weight. I discovered that less weight equals more money. For a unit that weighs 35 lbs, you’ll fork out from $2,500 to $3,000 easily. The Rubicon fit my budget much better and the additional weight of my unit gives me great stability and far more physically comfortable conditions. After some experimentation and research, I additionally purchased a rear carrier for my vehicles to easily carry my folding electric wheelchair. See photo of carrier with ramp and wheelchair. Cons. Not to my knowledge. My unit does everything it is designed to do, and does it well. When used as intended, the product performs as advertised. Do your own research. Decide for yourself. You take your money and you make your choice. Have fun with it. I can highly recommend this Rubicon 14 for those who need a good, solid, problem free wheeled experience. I enjoy it every time I’m out in it. It’s given me mobility that my aging body so greatly desires and enjoys. Helps me stay involved with family and friends. ... show more

  • Not a reliable chair
The wheelchair is hard to control. It randomly rams into walls and people. Not very comfortable to sit in especially for long periods of time. Even on the lowest speed setting the chair lunges forward when going from a stopped position. Half of the time it won't turn in either direction when trying to turn from a stopped position. The battery does not last for 30 miles. It got maybe 10 miles on a full charge. This chair has been a nightmare to deal with. ... show more

  • Customer service and functionally
Customer service is fantastic. The controller broke--I think from rough handling, but no questions asked and a replacement was sent through USPS within an hour. Controller works wonderful. Takes a little practice to get used to but it is able to do micro-control very well. Great product!

  • Little disappointed to a lot disappointed
The chair was built extremely well. Easy to lift and setup. The problem I had was that even on the low speed setting it was to hard to control in the house. The company sent me another joystick control but it didn't solve the problem. Unfortunately I had to return it. Wish it would have worked out for me. ... show more

  • Uncontrollable
The product specs met all of my requirements. Battery life, power, foldable, airline compliant. Unfortunately the throttle controls are erratic. The wheelchair will not move when the joystick is initially moved and then will jerk forward in the direction you are pointing. More importantly it doesn’t break when the joystick is moved to the neutral position. It continues to roll. The controls are unpredictable. The chair is dangerous. I have damaged walls and furniture and almost drove down several stairs. Very disappointed. I wouldn’t recommend this product. ... show more

  • Great product
My husband loves it. Kinda heavy for one person to lift but we have a drive in van. He uses it when ever he leaves the house and excellent for air travel.

  • Mobility!
I went to the mall for the first time in many, many, years and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just toodled around with my daughter. My joints are so wrecked I can’t walk for any distance without a lot of pain. Today, I rode a footpath around one of the city’s lakes. Less than a mile, but thoroughly enjoyed that as well. I appreciate the electric carts at the big stores, but they get so nasty and are usually in a sad state of disrepair. This chair is not all terrain, but I’m happy to live with that limit. You do have to be careful with off-camber sidewalks and such. I can’t give five stars because the wiring to the left motor is finicky. Sometimes I have to fiddle with it to get it to work. Also, the motors are a little noisy in my opinion. It’s not loud, it’s just noticeable maybe when the warranty expires I will disassemble it and see if it needs better grease. Otherwise, I’m happy with the mobility I have regained. ... show more
