I wind a lot of yarn and never have too many yarn winders. This is a very user friendly style and a nice value in comparison to a certain name brand. This winder preformed well on different weight wools. It had a variable position arm that was very handy to have. I don’t think I’ve had one exactly like that and it really helped in small spaces. It is plastic but a thicker cast plastic than some others. The clamp is more secure than the typical wing lip and it spins smoothly. This would be great for anyone with a smaller space or who needs a low tech winder.

I didn't realize how much this would change the game of crochet for me. I love this thing. It makes yarn so much easier to work with and store. The cakes are super easy to stack and I love not having to worry about my yarn collapsing and tangling. Also for some projects I split the strands and this makes it easier to store long strands without them tangling.

You need to hold the yarn with your hand to keep tension in order for it to wind properly. Having done that, I find it works great. I rolled a bunch of yarn for a tufting project and the cakes it makes make the yarn go smoothly into my tufting gun instead of constantly having strange tight bits like the skeins have when you first get them at the store. My only issue is the odd clamp you use to put it on a desk. Why would it ever need to be able to move at an odd angle when it needs to be on a flat surface to clamp on tight? I found that it has slipped out of position a couple of times while I was tightening it onto a surface, which is annoying. But it's a minor inconvenience. This thing still does its job and does it quickly.

I'm not sure what was causing the issues with the experiences of the first few people to review this winder, but it worked on my very first attempt. I was already aware that the yarn needs to have tension on it. Since I don't have a swift, I just held the yarn as it traveled from the ball to the metal holder on the winder. Without tension, it isn't going to form a tight cake. Also, be sure to anchor the metal arm that holds the yarn. It has a slot it snaps into on the bottom to hold it steady. For a $16 winder, I'm happy with the result.

Hand operated yarn winder, in my case I use it to remove old fishing line from reels. Attaches to table top via a built in clamp. All plastic construction with a metal guide to direct the line. It gets the job done, but as for its usage, it’s clunky and just feels like it’s going to come apart any moment.

I'm super glad to have gotten this, its really handy! I'm an avid crocheter, and being able to rewind skeins of yarn is imperative - I hate pull from the middle skeins! This is a little on the rickety side, but for the price I think it's a must have!

I use this to cake my yarn for my circular knitting machine. It helps me check for knots in the yarn which will tear up my machine if I have it set to autorun.
