  • all cut, but no horse
I have no horse, goat, or sheep to test these on, but I can tell you they're wicked sharp for cutting through woody stems. The only issue is you're limited to the branch size by the length of the shears (maybe 1.5" max?), but even a branch that thick can be a bear, and these cut right through. The solid handles are decently comfortable for short stints, and the solid (non-cushy) material is a lot easier to get clean (including disinfect, if you're working with animals). The lock mechanism is tight, which is good. Yes, it takes a little thumb strength to unlock but that's better than sticking your fingers in your gardening bag and getting cut by these puppies. The one complaint I could have is that if you're using these for an extended stretch -- say, a long morning hour pruning in the garden -- the handles will eventually become painful to use bare-handed. It would be a plus if the handles were designed (see Oxo for examples) to have an enlarged grip on the palm-facing handle. Failing that, I recommend wear working gloves with palm padding, as offset. Other than that one small suggestion, these are overall definitely worth the investment. ... show more

  • Cuts great. Just the right size.
We are using this for the garden. We've already used it to prune our very large and prolific Meyer Lemon Tree. It cuts great and easily. What a joy the right tool makes. I recommend it.

  • Great for pruning
This Pakcan dual use pair of shears is a precision made tool. I no longer have horses, so I do not need it for hoof trimming. But as a pruning tool it is topnotch. The blades are exceptionally sharp, and one blade is serrated to make trimming moderate branches easier. It has an opening spring strong enough to snap out after cutting. I like the positive secure locking lever so the blades stay closed when you want them closed. The handles are comfortable and of a size that both myself and my wife can use them without getting tired. I can certainly recommend these for pruning. ... show more

  • Very Good Garden Shears
This item is offered as a hoof trimmer as well as garden shear. I have never trimmed a hoof and wouldn't know if this is a good hoof trimmer or not but I do a lot gardening and this is a very sharp, well configured and sized garden shear or scissor. It's a mid-size shear that fits the hand well, not one of the mini style or the ones with huge gaping space between the handles. The carbon steel blades are well machined and fit precisely so they easily passed my initial test of cutting strips from copy paper without crunching the paper. They exert enough oomph for trimming some aggressive rose stems and even a young bougainvillea branch. The shears seem well made so as to be durable although frankly my experience is that all garden shears have a limited life even with hand sharpening. But we sha'll see. For now, recommended! ... show more

  • Work great for my purpose
I got these for gardening not hoof trimming :) They work great. The locking mechanism sometimes activates at inconvenient times but other than that I really like them. I especially like the rounded tips of the blades so I don't have to worry about throwing these in my pocket.

  • Excellent Shears for Garden Pruning with a Locking Mechanism
I have a coffee, cacao, mango farm in Kona District of the Big Island of Hawaii and pruning trees is a year-round effort. I go through shears a bit too often. These seem very durable and well-made, very sharp with an easy locking mechanism. The salt air here, being close to the ocean, is especially hard on all metal objects but these seem to be stainless steel which should give longer life. I am using them to graft trees and prune, and they are great for that. I cannot comment on how they might be for a hoof work. ... show more

  • I haven't had a need for hoof trimmers since the divorce...
My daughter is the gardener in the family. I got these for her, and I'm pleased to report that they instantly became her favorites! Vines are her big thing, and most pruners don't handle the small stuff very well. These are the best precision pruners she's found so far!👍

  • Just Average.
These garden shears are just basic in function, design and quality. They sure do not deliver the amount of value as their selling price calls for. Here are some thoughts from using it for the past week or two. 1) The handles are thin and do not have any knurled ribs to increase friction. It is just one single smooth piece of plastic that make up the handles on both sides. 2) The locking mechanism is rather difficult to lock in place. It must be compressed to an awkward angle (the blades more than overlap) for the lock to be able to latch in place. Once latched, it is also not easy to unlatch it. 3) The cutting action is not smooth at all. I believe it is the large spring that is the cause for this. When you make a cut, be it a stem of a rose bush or a sheep hoof, the blades and handles spring back with so much force that you need to quickly counteract it. If not, there is a chance that the spring might dislodge the shears from your hands. Overall, I do not recommend this pair of shears. ... show more
