This is an "anvil pruner", which has a broad lower base below the upper cutting blade, rather than being like other trimmers that are more like scissor. This type handles a much wider range of pruning, and can easily trim through tree or hedge cuttings 1/2" in diameter, which other hand-sized trimmers cannot.
